Over the 3 student free days (Wednesday 23/1 – Friday 25/1) our staff engaged in quality professional development focussed on the Australian Curriculum and developing high performing teams across our school. The focus on the Australian Curriculum enabled all staff to understand how the Australian Curriculum is intended to be implemented in each year level and vertically from prep to year 6. Curriculum Advisors from Regional Office worked with us to unpack the curriculum and our Head of Curriculum, Chris Kelly and our Deputy Principal, Louise Hart discussed a whole school approach to the Australian Curriculum delivery. We were also fortunate to have Chris Thomas from Queensland Educational Leadership Institute come to engage our whole staff in teamwork from research to application. Our year level teams worked with their line managers to develop their credo and will be working on their charter and protocols of operation. As well as the deep understanding of the Australian Curriculum our staff worked on consistent units of work across the year levels and backward mapping from the assessment criteria. We look forward to sharing this with you at our Australian Curriculum parent meetings during the term. Our staff also engaged in mandatory training which included the following: Asbestos, Code of Conduct and Student Protection. All staff will be engaging in CARA (Curriculum and Risk Assessment) training on line. During the term we will be having the school nurse visit to provide professional development on asthma and anaphylactic understanding and procedures. We welcome the following new staff to Wellers Hill and I know that our community will warmly embrace our new staff. Many of our staff are on long service leave, working at higher duties, or on maternity leave. We will endeavour to let you know when staff are on leave and the replacement teacher as soon as possible. Welcome back to Wellers Hill, we hope that you had a safe and restful holiday.

Communication This is a very important part of the school/ home relationship. We will be reviewing how the school and parents communicate with each other. Some things we will be doing to help with communication include the following: Update the school website including up to date calendar. If you want to get the latest information get the QSchools App . This app was devised by P&C Qld & Department of Education. See information below and flyer attached. Facebook – we know that not everyone is on facebook but a lot of people are and this will be another avenue for us to communicate. You can access facebook through the QSchools App. Emails – our admin team will be setting up year level emails accounts, these emails come from your enrolment forms, please let the office staff know if you have a change of email. Once we have set up the email addresses, we will be able to send out year level messages. Parent reps will also be able to send out messages. SMS – The SMS system is designed to give you a message if your child has not been marked on the roll. If we don’t have your latest phone number, we will get the message sent back to us as a failure message. Please ensure the office staff have your latest phone number. If phone numbers fail through this system, office staff are required to contact each person individually as we take attendance very seriously. SMS messages do cost money and will be used to send out important reminders or changes in programs or calendar. QSchools App will have latest notifications. Keeping in Touch with your teacher is important and all teachers are happy to receive emails or phone calls however teachers are teaching from 8:50am - 3:00pm and may not have the time to contact you during the day as their first priority is to our students. They will endeavour to contact you if there is an emergency or concerns. Please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance and the line manager of the year level, if further discussion is required. All contacts (email, phone or face to face) from parents or to parents are recorded on our oneschool system. This enables all staff to keep track of concerns, issues or positive communication from home and school. All members of the leadership team are available to work with your children, staff , parents and community members. Appointments to see us can be made through the school office. We want to know what other forms of communication we can use between home and school and there will be many opportunities to let us know your ideas. Teachers were given the opportunity to discuss their forms of communication on our student free days. We will be sharing these with you. Change takes time as was discussed at the review meetings. There are many great things in the Wellers Hill community that we want to continue and now is the time to move forward with improving things that require yearly auditing such as the delivery of a high quality systematic Australian Curriculum for all students. I look forward to working with the wonderful Wellers Hill community as we move forward for each and every child at our school. Vicki Caldow A/Principal

INCLUSIVE LEARNING PROGRAM NEWS My name is Michelle Mortimer and I am pleased to be starting 2019 at Wellers Hill. I have the privilege of working with the Inclusive Learning team. I look forward to meeting the families of children who have special needs so that I can get an understanding of each student’s needs and the adjustments required for them to maximise their participation in all aspects of the learning environment. I began the first 6 years of my teaching career in Early Years intervention at Ipswich, but since then I have worked across the full spectrum of State schooling from pre-school (before prep) to Year 12. My passion is working with students who have a disability, to ensure that they have every opportunity to reach their potential in their local school. During the past 30 years I have witnessed huge progress in special needs education. Special education units have been phased out as it becomes increasingly recognised that diversity and inclusion is a key to good educational outcomes for all students. Teachers use the opportunity of students with disability in their class to refine and develop their skills in differentiating the Australian curriculum to better meet the needs of individual students. Please contact me if you would like to discuss your child’s specific learning difficulties. I will be contacting all parents of verified students during the next week. You will find me in JLW next to the Art room where I work with the Support teacher-Literacy and Numeracy, Sue Webster.

FROM THE GUIDANCE OFFICER Dear parents and members of the school community, my name is Lisa Blake and am very excited to report that I have been appointed to Wellers Hill State School as a full-time Guidance Officer for 2019. I am keen to be an active team member and part of the school community as we work together to address the needs and enhance the well-being and academic outcomes for our students. I have been working as a Psychologist in schools for almost 10 years now and also have a background in working as a Child Psychologist in the private sector. I look forward to working across the school context including the provision of one-on-one student counselling, parent support, group work interventions, working with teachers in the classroom setting and contributing to whole school approaches. Please feel free to visit me and discuss any concerns or ideas you may have, my office is situated next to the school library. Wishing you the best for a positive and rewarding school year ahead. Lisa Blake Guidance Office POSTIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING Just A Reminder: BEFORE SCHOOL: (for ALL year levels 1-6): Students who are participating in music rehearsals, sports training or other school organised and supervised activities are not expected to be in the undercover area until after their activity has finished. While we strongly recommend students do not arrive before 8:30, those not involved in SACCS or an organised school activity who arrive before 8:40 must move directly to the main undercover area with their bags and be seated (do not put bags in the bag racks – please go straight to the undercover area). Students not in the undercover area must be with THEIR parent/carer (NB. parents/carers cannot be responsible for other people’s children). Bags must not be taken to the toilets – students drop the bags off in the undercover area then go to the toilet. While in the undercover area they can sit and talk with peers. There are no ball games or running around. Students will be dismissed at 8:40 as possible. Jack White Deputy Principal

COMMUNICATION AT WELLERS HILL One of the key improvement strategies from the review is to ‘Develop and implement a whole-school communication strategy that uses a broad range of contemporary channels and includes collaborative process, clear expectations for relational and timely responses to actively engage internal and external stakeholders’. On the pupil free days we asked all of our teachers for feedback around the five key parent concerns around communication at Wellers Hill. These were: • Untimely or lack of response to emails and requests for meetings. • Notification of key events during the school year is often with shorter notice than is desirable for families to include in their planning. • Efficacy of current communication channels and practices. • Slowness to advise when problems arise with student behaviour, learning needs, and engagement in learning. • Delay in advising when there is an upcoming or unexpected change of teacher.

We asked teachers to brainstorm ideas and solutions for how to address these concerns in ways that are realistic and consistent. During this term, we will be asking parents to engage in the same process so that we can develop a set of clear and realistic expectations and responsibilities for how we communicate at Wellers Hill. All parents will have the opportunity to get involved so I encourage everyone to have their say. Further information will be sent to all parents about how we will be asking for your feedback. Lisa Cameron Deputy Principal CONSISTENT WEEKLY COLLOBORATIVE PLANNING TIME Extract taken for the School Review “Teachers describe year level collaborative planning processes conducted each term to develop unit overviews in English, Mathematics, Science and HASS. This collaborative planning is valued by teachers and provides an opportunity for sharing of effective teaching strategies and deepening of knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the Australian Curriculum. Teachers express a desire to meet regularly during scheduled work hours with key curriculum leaders to collaboratively develop curriculum units and assessments tasks”. In response to teachers’ needs and to ensure success for all students, the allocation of teachers’ two (2) hours of Non Contact Time (NCT) has been reviewed this year. Teachers are now receiving their weekly NCT in a two (2) hour block as a year level team. Therefore, all teachers in a year level will be released together each week. This change will allow for teachers to meet more regularly to discuss curriculum programs and student data in order to refine teaching programs to better meet the needs of all students. As a result of this innovation, the start of break times have moved to allow for 2 x 2 hrs planning blocks to be utilised each day. Therefore, first break starts at 10:50 am and finishes at 11:30am

Years 1-3 Swimming Lessons During term one students from Years One to Three will be participating in a swimming program during PE lessons. Teachers will be liaising with parents during the term to ensure there is always parent supervision at each swimming lesson throughout the entire term. With Years One, Two and Three it would be preferred if there was a minimum of three parents at lessons and in the pool with the students. Students must wear a cap and sun shirt in the pool at all times. All items that are brought to school for swimming lessons such as school clothes, goggles and towels, should be clearly marked with the students name and class. If students have PE in the morning session, it would be advised that students come to school with their swimming togs on under their uniform. If a student is unable to swim on any given day, they need to bring a signed letter from their parents or medical professional explaining why. If students forget their swimmers or do not bring them on three occasions or more (without an acceptable reason) during a school term, they will have to attend a restitution session in their own lunchtime. Looking forward to your support of Wellers Hill Sports in 2019. MUSIC NEWS
