What you need to know about yoga classes….This month I would like to erase your fears about attending your first yoga class! It can be a little daunting, there are strange words used like ‘savasana’ and everyone else seems to just know where to put their shoes or what props they need for the class. But, classes are welcoming environments so no need to feel apprehensive, here’s a few tips to get you ready;

potent.
ThereisalsoSiberianginseng(Eleutherococcussenticosus),whichisactuallynotginsengbutashrubfromSiberia,China,KoreaandJapan.Ithasverysimilarusestoginseng(thusitsname)butmaybemoreefficientincasesofchronicfatiguesyndrome.
Finally,thereisIndianginseng,betterknownasashwagandha.Again,ofsimilarpropertiesto"true"ginseng.Ashwagandha(Whithaniasomniferum)isashrubnativetoIndia.TherootisusedinAyurvedicmedicineasarestorativeandrejuvenative,especiallyintimesofstress.Itworksverywellfornervousexhaustionandtoincreaseclarityofmind.Also,itmayimprovememoryandconcentrationlikeginseng.Itisoftenusedtohelpconditionsduetooldagesuchasenergyloss,muscularweakness,arthritisandinsomnia.
Ginsengisbestknownforincreasingenergylevels,butitalsohasstimulatingeffectsonwhiteimmunecells,mayimprovecellsresponsetoinsulin(thereforehelpingtoreducebloodglucoselevelsintype2diabetes)andmayhelpwithfertilityissues(lowlibido,erectiledysfunction).

‘Back to work following chronic back pain’I first met Mark* around this time last year. He arrived into the clinic accompanied by his wife, who was obviously very concerned about him. Mark had been referred to me by a local chiropractor who felt that Mark might benefit from some acupuncture for his back pain as he was not progressing as she hoped.
Bythisstage,Mark’sbackpainwaschronic;hehadnotbeenabletoworkforoversixmonths.MRIscansshowedseveralbulgingdiscs,aswellasdegenerativechangesinthelumbarregion(lowerback)ofhisspine.Markwasprettymuchinconstantpainandhetriedseveraldifferenttherapies,noneofwhichhadworked.AfterassessinghisMRIreportsandtakingadetailedmedicalhistory,Iconcludedthatacupuncturealonewouldn’tbeenough.IexplainedtoMarkthatchronicpain,suchashewasexperiencing,isprimarilycausedbystagnation.
Stagnationiswhensomethingisblockedor
impeded.Theeasiestwaytounderstanditintermsofyourmusclesistothinkofthemasanetworkoflittletubes,withthemusclecellsmakingupthewallsofthetubesandyourbloodrunningthroughthecentreofthetubes.Themusclecellsneedaconstantflowofbloodthroughthem,bothtonourishthemandtoremovethetoxicby-productsofmusclemetabolism.Whenmusclesareoverworkedorchronicallyfatiguedthesetoxicby-productscannotbeclearedfastenoughandaredepositedwithinthemuscle.Oneoftheby-products,lacticacid,eventuallycrystallisesanditistheselacticacidcrystalsthatformwhatweoftenrefertoas‘knots’inourmuscles.Whenthisoccurs,themusclecellsaroundthatareabecomecongestedandlessflexibleandthiscanthenleadtothatareabecomingdamagedandtearingonexertion.This,inturn,allowstinybitsofbloodtobereleasedintothemusclecausingfurthercongestion.Overtimethesedamagedareasactlikeblockagesfortheflowofbloodthroughthemuscle,therebypreventingthoseareasfrombeingnourishedandhealedandpromotingfurthercongestionanddamage.Theresultischronicpain.
OnceIhadexplainedthistoMark,IadvisedatreatmentplanthatincorporatedCuppingandGuaSha,twomanualtechniques,aswellasacupuncturetoalleviatehisbackpainandpromotehealing.TheCuppingandGuaShawouldreleasethecongestionheldinhismuscleswhiletheacupuncturewould
promotehealingofthem,aswellashelpingtopreventfurtherdegenerativechangesinhislumbarspineandpossiblyreversesomeofthebulgesinhisdiscs.
AfterthefirsttreatmentMark’sbackpainhadsignificantlydecreasedandhenolongerhadanypaindownhisleftleg.Withinfourtreatments,hisbackpainhadlocalisedtoonesmallareainhislowerbackandwasonlyapproximately30%ofthepainhehadbeenexperiencingforalmostayear.AftersixtreatmentsMarkwascompletelypainfreeandjusteightweeksafterwalkingthroughmydoors,hereturnedtowork.OneyearlaterMarkisstillcompletelypainfree,hecontinuestoseemeforamaintenancetreatmentonceamonthandgiventhathe’saplastererbytradeIregardhimasoneofmygreatersuccesses.

Put the SPRING back in your Step! - how to re-energise, refocus, & bring vitality back after the winterSo, putting that spring back into our step this time of year can be slow if the body is quite sluggish. I hear a lot of people say their energy is low and there can be several reasons for this. To have good energy we need to address some of the following:

How do you manage your stress on a daily basis?So last year I started to get more and more clients coming my way who were suffering with a lot of stress and anxiety. The speed at which society is trying to keep up with and the lack of down time and recovery in your every day is starting to play on people. We need stress in our lives, but we need the balance. So, we have good stress and bad stress.
Eustress(Goodstress)canbedefinedasanappropriateamountofstressfollowedbyadequaterestandrecovery.Eustresshasverybeneficialeffectsonthebodyandisrequiredtokeepamindandbodyhealthyandstrong.
Distress(Badstress)canbedefinedastoomuchstressfortoolong(chronicstress)withinadequateperiodsofrestandrecovery.Thebodyneedsthestressresponseturnedofftoengagetheparasympatheticnervoussystemtorecoverfromthestress.Whenstresslevelsarenotregulatedandmanagedaviciouscycleofstress,perpetuatingstresscanoccurleadingtochronicstress.Thebodywasnotdesignedtodealwithfightorflightasalong-termresponsesochronicstresscanbeaverydestructiveforceinthe
