Youwillsoonunderstandthemakingsofthislocalathlete.YoumayfindoutthatyoushareoneofhermajorweaknesseslikeIdo-gelato!Hereismyexclusiveinterviewwithheraftercompletingtherace.Are you from Wellington? If not, where? What are your roots?IwasbornandraisedinMiami,FL,butmyfamilynowlivesinNewSmyrnaBeach,FL.When did you first get into sports? Do you come from a sports-driven family?Ihavealwaysbeenanathlete. Igrewupastheyoungestof5,(3girlsand2boys),buttheboyswereclosestinage,soInaturallybecametheirteammateforvariousbackyardsports.Myauntswerealwaysrunners(whichIthoughtwascrazy!),myfatherwasafootballplayer,andmybrotherwasafootballandhockeyplayer. Thegirlsinthefamilywereallmodels,butasIgotolder,IdecidedIwantedtopursuesportsinstead.Myrealathleticcareerstartedin7thgrade,whenafriendofminebeggedmetoaccompanyhertovolleyballteamtryouts.IhadintendedtojointhecrosscountryteamuntilIfoundoutIwastheonly7thgraderwhomadethevolleyballteam. Ifellinlovewiththesportandplayedcompetitivelyfromthatdayforward.How did you get into the sport of triathlon?Icameintothesportoftriathlonreallybydefault. Aftersufferingacareerendingshoulderinjuryand5surgeries,Ineeded todo somethingbesides volleyball to stay in shape(and releasemy competitive energy). I startedrunning. Irana5k,thena10k,thenahalfmarathonandfinallymyfirstfullmarathon. Ibegantoloverunning,butmybodywasfeelingtheeffectsoftoomuchmileageandpounding. WhenIjoinedWRCin2009,Iheardafewotherrunnerstalkingaboutridingtheirbikesforcrosstraining. ThatwasallIneededtohear.Iboughtabike,gotaLAFitnessmembership,andstartedtraining.Where do you find your inspiration and motivation?Everyday isdifferent. Iamalwaysmotivatedbycompetitionandachallenge,butIfindsomethingdifferenttofocusontogetthrougheachworkout. Sometimesitspeople,sometimesitsBibleverses,andsometimesit’sdessert.What does a typical training week look like for you?Dependswhatmynextraceis,butastandardbasetrainingweekistypicallySwimhours3-4,Bikehours5-6,RunMiles20-30,WeightTraining3-4x/weekHow do you reward yourself after a grueling workout? Travelin’ Man attends US Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon
“Upwiththesun,gonewiththewind,shealwayssaid I was lazy. Leavin’my home, leavin’myfriends, runnin’ when things get too crazy”. DetroitnativeBobSegerpennedthosewords a long time ago and Ilistened to them way back inthe1980swhenIattendedcol-legeinMichiganandrancom-petitivetrack.Thosedaysweresimple.Theworldwaseasiertounderstand. My buddy/team-mate onmy track teamwas askinny guy named Craig Mc-Carthy.Yeah, I think itwouldbefairtosaythatIlikedCraigright from the start. He wasquick-wittedandalwaysmademelaugh.HejoinedtheUSAirForce and then the US Navy.Hemovedoftenandworkedinhighlyclassifiedoperations.Hewas a Patriot who served ourcountrywellforover27years.Welosttouchlikemanypeopledo.I remember the last bit of dialogue from one ofmyfavorite movies, The Shawshank Redemption, Redis speaking of his friendAndywhenhe says: “I hadhopedtoseemyfriend,shakehishandandreliveourdaystogetherwhentheworldturnedmuchslower.Wehadstartedajourneybackmanyyearsagowhosecon-clusionwas uncertain.Hope is a good thing,maybethebestofthings,andnogoodthingeverdies.”Ihadhopedtoseemyfriendagaintoo.

Eugene, OR [Hayward Field]for the US Olympic Trials inJuneofthisyear.Thisisgroundzerofordie-hardtrackandfieldfans, where Nike was foundedandwhere the legend of StevePrefontainewasborn.Themeetandthefacilitieswerefantastic.We got to see GalenRuppwin theMen’s 5000me-ters in an inspiring, down thestretchduelwithBernardLagatin Olympic trials record timerecord. Allison Felix wowedthe crowd of over 20,000withaworldleading200metertime.Fort Lauderdale native SandraRichards-Rossturnedinaster-ling performance in thewom-ens 400 meters. Hope springseternal.Passion and awe inspiring per-
formancesruledtheday.Someathleteswerethereforredemption,otherstotryonelasttimetoattaintheirgoals of qualifying to represent theUSA inLondon.Craig and I enjoyed everyminute of the trials. BobSeger would say that “these are the memories thatmakemeawealthysoul”.Iconcur. -Mark Janik
