It’s Not Too Late for Your Flu Shot!
Influenza (flu) is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. People of all ages, and even those in good health, are at risk for flu. The best protection and prevention from getting the flu is to get a flu shot every year. There are several types of flu vaccines recommended depending on a person’s age and health status.
A flu shot is especially important for people at high risk of serious flu complications, including young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions (e.g. diabetes, heart disease, lung disease), and people aged 65 years and older.
Flu season starts as early as October and can go through May, but it usually peaks between December and February. It takes about two weeks after receiving a flu shot for the immune system to build full protection against the flu. For a list of Steuben County pharmacies offering flu shots, visit http://tinyurl.com/PharmImms. Flu shots are also available at health care provider offices. Get a flu shot now and enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season.
Chiropractic Care as an Alternative to Opioids Samuel W. Ascioti, DC; Corning Chiropractic Associates
Back and neck pain can cause suffering and disrupt lives. They can be simply annoying or completely unbearable. As a chiropractor, many of my patients with back or neck pain have been prescribed pain-relieving opioid medication, but are hesitant to take the medication because of concerns with the recent news about opioids.
According to the White House, there are roughly 7 deaths per hour due to drug overdoses. For many, prescribing opioids has been an effective way to treat patients with pain, but painkillers do not address the underlying causes of pain. Instead, the medication masks symptoms, which may put a patient at risk for further injury or illness by reducing the perception of severity of pain and may lead to addiction to maintain the state of being pain-free.
As a chiropractor practicing in Steuben County, I feel that it is very important for the public to be aware of non-drug approaches to pain. Therapies such as chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture, massage, etc. are becoming recognized as a first-line approach for treating neck and back pain. These approaches reduce the need for opioids, potentially decreasing addiction rates.
In the past couple years, both the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided updated guidelines for treating pain that include to first use non-drug, non-invasive approaches (such as chiropractic care) before prescribing opioids.
There are certainly effective methods for treating back and neck pain that do not include prescribing opioid
medication. The community and local health providers should be aware of these options. There is a growing pile of
evidence supporting chiropractic care as a go-to alternative for prescription drugs or surgery, and many are likely to
find relief through these methods. My patients can speak to the relief they found through chiropractic care, and are
happy that they do not have to deal with pain and addiction when they seemingly had no options left through
traditional medical interventions. Consider the options and first try non-opioid methods of treating pain to help end
the tragedy of addiction.

Boys and girls can receive the HPV vaccine starting at age 9 up to age 26. The HPV vaccine is an easy way to protect against cancer later in life. January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, and getting the HPV vaccine is the best way to prevent cervical cancer. Nearly 13,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year; the vaccine can help to make sure your child is not one of them.
