Welsh Rowing

Welsh Rowing is committed to ensuring that it is a strong, robust

and sustainable organisation that represents the needs of our

community of coastal, river and indoor rowing members.

Welsh Rowing is determined to build a vibrant and strong rowing

community in schools, clubs and strategic water sports venues

across Wales. Effective partnerships will support the successful

development of elite rowing performers whilst contributing to the

life and health of thousands of enthusiasts throughout Wales.

Partnerships are crucial to our success and will be at the centre of our strategy. In particular we will work with -

British Rowing— Building on existing work with community, workforce development and performance programmes. To support the liaison with UK wide national bodies.

Sport Wales— to develop a world leading community sports system for rowing that will offer an attractive and quality experience to both potential and existing participants in our sport and nurture and develop talented individuals in clubs

Clubs— Welsh Rowing recognises that to develop elite rowers in Wales the sport will require a strong core of community clubs on river and the coast.

Professional Sport, Leisure & Education Providers—Rowing in Wales will also need to empower sport, leisure and physical education professionals with appropriate and effective tools, support and training to maximise the potential of indoor, river and coastal rowing.

Commercial Water sport Centres—Key strategic partnerships are required to support the development of rowing and to host events. Welsh Rowing therefore acknowledges that venues have to be effectively managed and maintained as a shared resource for a variety of users and activities as well as a base for commercial operators.

Development

Welsh Rowing has an overall aim of delivering a comprehensive rowing strategy for Wales.

The Development programme will aim to provide a local ‘framework’ for services, programmes, local facilities, and sources of funding, in partnership with other organisations and agencies. This local planning framework will need to engage the public sector, voluntary run clubs, education and commercial delivery partners. All activities should ensure that rowing complements the nationwide recreational water activities plan.

Indoor rowing has grown in popularity, with many participants in schools, rowing clubs and gyms using rowing machines to keep fit, for training for rowing and other sports, and for competition

A structured indoor and on-water rowing programme through learn to row programmes and community club links.

Providing appropriate competitive and personal challenges encouraging progression to rowing weekly.

Clubs are at the centre of the sport of rowing, and are a key factor in both recruiting and retaining people of all ages. Where appropriate levels of investment and support for both volunteers and facilities have been made across the UK, there has been success in delivering sustainable, long-term participation in rowing.

Providing support, advice, training and development opportunities, and links to local and regional networks.

Proposed Objectives

Promoting rowing and how it can contribute to an active lifestyle. Deliver quality programmes that cater for different abilities. Develop and support the network of voluntary clubs. Provide inclusive sporting opportunities that respect diversity. Provide opportunities for regular participation. Ensure there are pathways in place for those who want to progress. Ensure that opportunities are stable and sustainable for the future. Deliver UKCC level 2 training and CPD workshops Deliver new young leaders and indoor leaders training

Performance

Rowing continues to be one of Great Britain’s most successful

sports on the World Stage. Welsh Rowers have contributed to this

on going success at World and Olympic levels. Welsh Rowing

acknowledges the excellent support it has received from Sport

Wales, British Rowing and other partners, and believes that with

appropriate investment, it can deliver ambitious targets, making a

significant contribution to the development of a world class system

for success on the world stage. This ambition will also extend to

World coastal, and Paralympic events.

Welsh Rowing has a role to identify potential talent in Wales or in Welsh Rowers, to develop and maximise that potential to a point where those rowers are successfully invited into the appropriate GB entry point on the British Rowing High Performance Pathway.

By working with clubs, universities and schools to develop higher performing rowers and progressing them along the pathway to the GB squad system, the overall standard of domestic rowing will also improve.

The Cardiff Bay Water Sports Centre and Welsh Institute of Sport Sophia Gardens provide the venue for performance squads with on-site accommodation to support training camps for athletes.

Events

Welsh Rowing will focus on developing, coordinating and delivering well run, sustainable and effective events that will assist in promoting Wales as a World class destination for community and performance indoor, coastal and river rowing events. It is anticipated this will aid Welsh Rowing in increasing the broad range of interest and participation within the sport.

The Event programme will need to coordinate a calendar of appropriate and sustainable events that promote the sport, support formal club competitions and successfully host national and international events.

The core activity for many club members is the Welsh and British Rowing’s annual calendar of Rowing competitions that are run throughout the country and throughout the year on rivers, coasts and indoors.

Events are run by a large contingent of volunteer organisers, umpires and officials who are vital to the success of the sport and need on going support and development

Welsh Rowing will need to ensure that all events secure suitable funding to cover costs of the events and adequate provision to manage both competitors and spectators safety.

Each Welsh Rowing led event will require an appropriate business planning process including robust financial, workforce and operational plans.
