From the Principals

Wembley PS Mission ‘empower all students to learn at high levels to become successful, independent, lifelong learners’

Page 2: Wembley Primary School · 2015-09-02 · Wembley Primary School Newsletter No. 27 – 2 September 2015 32 St Leonards Ave, Yarraville Ph: 9314 7054 Fax: 9314 9302 Email: wembley.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au

procedures that have occurred over the past four years. Future directions were also set for Wembley to ensure that we progress from being a great school to an even better one for your children. More information regarding the outcomes of the review will be communicated with parents in Term 4. Essential Learning Progress Reports Parents have received Essential Learning Progress Reports on Friday of last week. This revised format was in response to feedback provided from parents. It now includes:

• a learning progress scale (beginning, consolidated or mastered) for each Essential Learning

• whether the learning sequence of the Essential Learning that is being reported on, is ongoing or completed

• Intervention focus and whether the student is currently in tier 2 or tier 3 • effort scale for each Essential Learning • attendance and punctuality • a teacher comment relating to one of the Essential Learnings

Once again thank you to the parents who provided feedback and comments regarding the revised report format. All comments are welcomed and appreciated and help us to provide parents with easily accessible information about your child’s learning and achievements. Response to Intervention Institute Members of the Leadership Team, Vassie D’Arcangelo, Ang Petridis and Annmaree Jones attended a two day professional development activity on Intervention earlier on this week. The team came away with several future directions for the Intervention initiative that has been implemented at Wembley this year. There were also many affirmations for the work that has been done this year in Intervention to support every child to learn at high levels and achieve academic success. When sharing our journey with colleagues during the program it became clear how well our Intervention is embedded into Teaching and Learning across the school and aligned with our Essential Learnings. Along with our dedicated teaching team we will strive to make further improvements next term and for 2016. Father’s Day Stall Thank you to the Wembley Action Group (WAG) who conducted the Father’s Day Stall today for students to purchase gifts. The stall will be open again tomorrow, Thursday, for those children who forgot to bring money along today. All of our “Dads” are wished a very happy Father’s Day for Sunday and we trust you will enjoy the little treasures that were carefully selected for you, from the stall.

Interschool Snowsports For the first time ever Wembley Primary School has had a team in the interschool snowsports championships. The event was open to all primary schools in Victoria and was held at Mt Buller Ski Resort last week. Wembley was represented by Brooklyn Bellin, Holly Gibney, Ged Gibney, Angus Young and Tyler Waddington. Between them they participated in six skiing and snowboarding events. None of the kids had ever competed in snowsports before, so it was a steep learning curve, but they all had a ball. Parents also enjoyed the opportunity to meet other Wembley families. Wembley are looking to have more students compete in the championships in 2016, so please contact the office if you want some more information. In particular a big thank you to Damien Waddington for showing the initiative to get Wembley involved in this fun event. Free Dress Day The Junior School Council will be holding a free dress day on the last Thursday of term, Thursday September 17 (same day as the Disco). This day will be held to support State Schools Relief, which is a not for profit organization that provides school uniforms and shoes to students in need. Students are asked to wear their football gear or sports uniforms and donate a gold coin to this worthwhile cause.

Junior School Council Profile Hi, I’m Abbi and I’m the Junior School Council representative for Year 5. I like being on the Junior School Council because I get to help make the school an even better place to be and help make the student’s dreams for the school, a reality. I like to play outside with my two best friends, Scarlett and Isabella and I also like PE and Art. Wembley Music Festival continues The first of our student performances, the Prep-Year 2 Soiree will be held in the gym on Friday from 2.15-3.15pm. Parents are invited to come along and support the children as they present some of the songs that they have been learning in Music this term. Next week, Wembley will welcome Musica Viva, ‘Shrewd Brass’ to perform for all classes on Tuesday. Friday week, September 11, Years 3 & 4 students will be entertaining their parents between 2.15-3.15 with their Soiree in the gym. Once again, all parents are invited to attend this performance. A note advising all of these dates was sent home to all families at the beginning of the term. The festivities will conclude on Thursday 17 September with the Junior School Council Disco. Information regarding drop off and pick up arrangements for the disco were sent home last week and a copy of the parent note with all of the details concerning the disco can be found on the school website. Friday Assembly Due to the Soirees that are planned for the next two Friday afternoons there will be no Friday afternoon assembly. The final Friday assembly for the term will be held on Friday 18 September at 2pm and students will be dismissed for the term holidays at 2.15pm. Parents are invited to attend this final assembly for the term. Canteen The canteen will be having a special ‘Footy Lunch’ day on Thursday 17 September. Order forms are included in the newsletter today and are also available from the office. Completed orders can be placed in the lunch baskets and they will be processed through the canteen. This will be the last day that canteen will be open for the term. There will be no canteen sales for recess or lunch orders on the last day of term, Friday 18 September.

Book Week Visiting Authors During Book Week we had a number of authors visiting our school to speak to our students about their writing craft and inspirations for their writing. This involved all classes from Prep-Year Six. The following authors visited our school and were highly impressed by the students at Wembley. Prep-Year 2 – Lee Fox Years 3 & 4 – John Heffernan Year 5 – Shamini Flint Year 6 –James Phelan All the authors made a huge impact on the students, presenting a fully engaging and entertaining presentation of their writing inspirations, research and illustrations. The students listened intently and used some of the tips back in their classroom to enhance their writing. 2B was highly motivated following their session with Lee Fox, that they decided to use the author’s writing process from seed to publication to write an innovation of one of her popular books, ‘Ella Kazoo Will Not Brush Her Hair.’ Jasper Kazoo Will Not Go To School Published by 2B Jasper Kazoo will not go to school, He yells and he screams and he says, "It’s not cool". Jasper Kazoo will not go to school. Jasper Kazoo stays in bed all day long. He talks to himself, sleeps and sings a song And turns on his computer to play Donkey Kong. His sister Ella gets up early for school. She’d rather go there than swim in the pool. She likes to learn English and Maths and Sport. She likes her teacher and to be taught. Jasper Kazoo’s brain starts to shrink. It’s hard to eat and play and even to think. Dad yells, “Don’t be so lazy.” Your body is tired and your mind is hazy. I think you might be going crazy!” So Jasper Kazoo drags himself out of bed. He puts on his uniform and scratches his head. He’s almost ready to get his mind fed.

Page 6: Wembley Primary School · 2015-09-02 · Wembley Primary School Newsletter No. 27 – 2 September 2015 32 St Leonards Ave, Yarraville Ph: 9314 7054 Fax: 9314 9302 Email: wembley.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au

Jasper Kazoo arrives at Wembley. “Where have you been?” asks all of 2B, “Today’s not a school day for you and me, Because we’re off to camp at “Cottage By The Sea!” The class also sent a copy of this to the author who responded as follows, “Thank you so much for sending me your magnificent poem! You have worked so hard to get it rhyming just right and I am thrilled that you sent it to me and I’m very proud of your wonderful efforts. Yes, I have enjoyed reading it a number of times and will treasure it. Many thanks again for sending it to me. I was so happy to visit Wembley Primary School during Book Week and I hope you keep on rhyming. It's lots of fun isn't it?” Book Week Parade The Book Week Parade on Friday morning was a huge success. Students, parents and teachers put in a huge effort with costume preparation. You could feel the excitement and the enthusiasm flow not only from our youngest students but even our Year 6 students. Many famous characters could be seen in the crowd. There were witches, fairies, ballerinas, Wally's, a Lorax, Shrek, several Harry Potters and several of his friends, Cinderella's, Snow Whites, Alice in Wonderland and many, many more colourful characters. The amount of visitors who attended the parade is testament to our wonderful community spirit. Thank you to all of the parents who arrived at work a little later on Friday morning! Thank You On behalf of the Wembley staff, I wish to thank you- the parents, for your support throughout Book Week, the Book Parade and the author visits.

National Literacy and Numeracy Week:

Monday 31 August - Friday 4 September

Next week, Wembley will be joining in the celebrations for National Literacy and Numeracy Week. Our focus will be on Numeracy in particular, given the strong literacy focus this week during Book Week. The following activities are planned as part of the celebrations: Guess the Number Competition On Friday we will be holding a Guess the Number in the Jar Competition to target students' estimation skills. Bring in a gold coin to enter, with money raised to be spent on school literacy or numeracy resources. Lunchtime Activities Numeracy Trails Go on a numeracy hunt around the school. A numeracy trail for students from years Prep, 1 and 2 will be held on Monday 31 August, with another held for students in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 on Tuesday 1 September. Details will be given at assembly. Paper Plane Competitions Make a paper plane and watch it soar. Estimate how far your plane will go and then check how close your estimate was by measuring. A competition for years Prep, 1 and 2 will be held on Thursday 3 September, with a second competition on Friday 4 September for students from years 3, 4, 5 and 6. Details will be given at assembly. Book Swap On Wednesday 2 September a Book Swap will be held to raise money for Indigenous Literacy Day in the BER (please see below for more details), along with a Dreamtime story reading and activity session. To raise additional funds for this worthwhile cause, some Big Games will also be set up on the quadrangle, with students having an opportunity to play for a 50-cent donation. Reading Opens Doors This year, as part of our National Literacy and Numeracy Week celebrations, our school is supporting the work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation by holding a Great Book Swap on national Indigenous Literacy Day Wednesday 2 September. To take part students need to bring along a book that they are happy to swap with another student and a gold coin donation to choose a “new” book. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) works to put books into the hands of children and families in remote Indigenous communities across Australia. In the lifetime of the project, with the support of many people and organisations including schools, they have sent more than 120,000 new, high quality books to over 230 remote communities. The ILF also runs an early literacy project called Book Buzz, which puts board books into the hands of babies, toddlers and their families. The Foundation has published and funded more than 40 community books, some of which are translated into first language. Please help us support their work! Please bring any books that you would like to donate in to school throughout this week. There is a box set up outside the office, which is labeled for this purpose. Then don't forget to bring your gold coin donations on the day! Thank you. Numeracy Challenges Included in this newsletter are 2 numeracy challenges that students can complete at home and bring in to enter in the Numeracy Challenge Competition and win a prize. One challenge is for students in Years Prep, 1 and 2, with the other challenge targeted at students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. Please insert all entries in the labeled box outside the office. All correct entries will go in the draw and a winner for!each challenge will be announced at the Assembly on Friday 4 September. Remember to include your name and class on your entry and good luck!
