Chaplain’s Message Rev. Rafael Becerra

From a homily by Saint John Chrysostom, bishop (Hom. De diabolo tentatore 2, 6: PG 49, 263-264)

Five paths of repentance

Would you like me to list also the paths of repentance? They are numerous and quite varied, and all lead to heaven. A first path of repentance is the condemnation of your own sins: Be the first to admit your sins and you will be justified. For this reason, too, the prophet wrote: I said: I will accuse myself of my sins to the Lord, and you forgave the wickedness of my heart. Therefore, you too should condemn your own sins; that will be enough reason for the Lord to forgive you, for a man who condemns his own sins is slower to commit them again. Rouse your conscience to accuse you within your own house, lest it become your accuser before the judgment seat of the Lord. That, then, is one very good path of repentance. Another and no less valuable one is to put out of our minds the harm done us by our enemies, in order to master our anger, and to forgive our fellow servants’ sins against us. Then our own sins against the Lord will be forgiven us. Thus you have another way to atone for sin: For if you forgive your debtors, your heavenly Father will forgive you. Do you want to know of a third path? It consists of prayer that is fervent, careful and comes from the heart. If you want to hear of a fourth, I will mention almsgiving, whose power is great and far-reaching. If, moreover, a man lives a modest, humble life, that, no less than the other things I have mentioned, takes sin away. Proof of this is the tax-collector who had no good deeds to mention, but offered his humility instead and was relieved of a heavy burden of sins. Thus, I have shown you five paths of repentance: condemnation of your sins, forgiveness of our neighbor’s sins against us, prayer, almsgiving and humility. Do not be idle, then, but walk daily in all these paths; they are easy, and you cannot plead your poverty. For, though you live out your life amid great need, you can always set aside your wrath, be humble, pray diligently and condemn your own sins; poverty is no hindrance. Poverty is not an obstacle to our carrying out the Lord’s bidding, even when it comes to that path of repentance which involves giving money (almsgiving, I mean). The widow proved that when she put her two mites into the box! Now that we have learned how to heal these wounds of ours, let us apply the cures. Then, when we have regained genuine health, we can approach the holy table with confidence, go gloriously to meet Christ, the king of glory, and attain the eternal blessings through the grace, mercy and kindness of Jesus Christ, our Lord. RESPONSORY: Tobit 12:8-9; Luke 6:37-38 Prayer accompanied by fasting and giving to the poor is good; it is better to give to the poor than to store up gold, – for giving to the poor expiates every sin. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven; give and it shall be given to you. – For giving to the poor expiates every sin. Let us pray: Father, help us to seek the values that will bring us lasting joy in this changing world. In our desire for what you promise make us one in mind and heart. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. – Amen.

Northside Columbus Club John Buck, President Rentals are going well, but remember to always promote the rental of our halls to your family, friends, church, co-workers, etc. Men with the Council Memorial Mass, Christmas Party and New Year's Eve Dance coming up soon, I will once again ask for volunteers to help set up the hall for these events. With your volunteer help, we can save this expense and put it towards the Principle of our Order-Charity. It may not seem like much of a savings by asking for volunteers to perform these duties, but it will help the Council and NSCC. I want to thank the October work day workers: Billy Hoffart, Don Christen, Bennie Bronikowski, Ben Kaminski, Nick Navarro, Lydia Clifton, and John Buck. These few 7 people gave 4 hours of their time on Saturday and performed many tasks--sweeping the cobwebs from the hall, repairing lights, replacing light bulbs, dusting the ceiling fans, cleaning the bar ceiling, arranging the bar coolers, power washing the public entry doors, waxing the public entry foyer floor, and a few other tasks. Many thanks to Joe Pavlik for his weekly yard service. Next workday is November 21. Please join us for an hour or two or three.

SENIOR CLUB Next meeting is November 10. Ham will be provided.

Members are asked to bring a side dish and dessert. We will no longer be selling raffle tickets for prizes. Instead

they will be sold for a chance to win a monetary prize of $5.00.

Depending on how many tickets are sold will determine how

many drawings we have each time.

Northside Columbus Club Floyd Rekieta, Secretary On November 9th, NSCC will have a short meeting to present the results of the audit recently preformed.

All members of Council 2917

and Ladies Auxiliary are invited.

Sunday, December 13 Cocktails beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Dinner served at 5:00 p.m.

This will be a free catered dinner for members and their spouse/guest, Since we are charged for what is ordered,

the amount ordered will be based on the RSVP count.

The Council held their annual 2015 Casino Night fundraiser on Saturday, October 10th. Although the crowd was slightly

less than in previous years, this was the loudest and most fun group that I have had the pleasure of entertaining over

the last six years. All expenses are not yet in but the 2015 Casino Night expects to profit between $14,500 and $15,000.

I want to take this opportunity to THANK all our Sponsors, volunteers, event attendees and the 2015 Casino Night

Planning Committee Members. A special recognition goes out to Bro. Jim Descant, Bro. Tony Cavaliere, Delores Buck

and Charlotte Sziy who played such a vital role in selling tickets and/or obtaining donations. Mark your calendar for

October 8, 2016 and come out to Casino Night to enjoy the fun.

Gus and Frances raised seven children: Jude, wife Rose; Dennis, wife Chris; Mark; Sharon Mathews, husband Bill; Regina Wolff, husband Karl; Susan Sivcoski; Theresa Kello, husband, Kevin. Gus was blessed with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a large extended family. He was involved with St. Vincent DePaul and church bazaars for many years. He served as the President of the Home Association of the Knights of Columbus Council 2917, which he was a lifetime member. He enjoyed bowling, dancing, barbequing at home and cooking for many of the Family Days at KC 2917. The VFW post 581 ceremonial burial detail became the greatest passion for volunteering. He stated many times that he received more from doing the funerals than what he did for the grieving families. Gus took the challenge of the com-mander position and somewhere in the 12 years he became the taps bugler. Gus attended every Memorial Day service at the VA cemetery and downtown Houston. These numerous volunteer hours earned Gus the Texas State Council of Knights of Columbus Patriotism Award "For his passion to keep God in Prayers at the Veterans Cemetery."

Honor Our Military

Let's honor our military,

The men and women who serve,

Whose dedication to our country does not falter,

halt or swerve.

Let's respect them for their courage;

They're ready to do what's right

To keep America safe,

So we can sleep better at night.

Let's support and defend our soldiers,

Whose hardships are brutal and cruel,

Whose discipline we can't imagine,

Who follow each order and rule.

Here's to those who choose to be warriors

And their helpers good and true;

They're fighting for American values;

They're fighting for me and you.

LADIES' AUXILIARY Kelly Clawson, President Dear Ladies,

November is a time of thanks. There is so much to be thankful for in my life. Like everyone else I am thankful for my family, health, and friends. But I am extremely thankful that I am part of a wonderful group of women who give so generously, do so much to help others, and care about each other as family. You all make my job as president, so easy and fun, it's a true blessing. A great example is our event "Celebrating Sisters." Several of you brought in gift cards, and helped in other ways. As this article is due right before the event, I will report on it next month. Remember that in lieu of the November meeting, we are hoping everyone will attend the Memorial Mass for deceased members on Monday, November 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. There will be no meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary until January. The KC and Ladies Christmas Party will be on Sunday, December 13th. We will be having the mini-raffle again this year. If you have anything you would like to donate toward the baskets, please get with Doris as soon as possible. She can be reached at 713-466-0606. I want to make sure everyone knows about our new attendance prize that will start in January. The starting amount will be $20. The names of all members will be in the drawing pool. If the name drawn is not in attendance, the amount will increase $20 for the next meeting. The amount will increase $20 for each meeting until the name drawn is a member in attendance. We are hoping this new attendance prize will increase member attendance at our meetings. I am really thankful for our dedicated workers and bakers for the Bingo kitchen. For the month of September, workers were: Delores Tobola, Earline Okruhlik, Theresa Burkett, Sandra Rekieta, Judy Wendt, Dorothy Urbanovsky, Angie Heinrich, Kathy Bronikowski. The delicious desserts were made by Dorothy Urbanovsky, Gladys Tobias, Angie Heinrich, Judy Wendt, Sandra Rekieta, Earline Okruhlik, Kathy Bronikowski Oh yes, I have so much to be thankful for! Love you all!
