TheAboriginalpeoplelivingalongtheDarlingriverwereknownasthe‘Barkindji’(or‘Paakantyi’),meaning‘belongingtotheriver’.
ThegoaLagoonwithitsproximitytotheriverjunction,wasanatural‘meetingplace’whereAboriginalpeoplegatheredforCorroborees.Nothing’schanged-stillagreat‘meetingplace’.
ThegoaselfguidedtourbrochuresareavailableatlocalVICs.Takeinthenaturalbeautyandlearnofthearchaeologicalsites-including:middens,hearths(fireplaces),scartrees(canoes,shieldsandtoolshavebeenremovedfromtheRiverRedGumtrees)andthemarveloftheBoundaryTree.

TheOldWentworthGaolThemostwell-knownbuildinginWentworthisH.M.OldWentworthGaol.ThefirstprisondesignedforAustralianconditionsopenedin1881,atestimonytothebuildingskillsoftheday.Thegaolservedalargeareayetonlyoperateduntil1927.Opentovisitorsdaily,atourofthegaolgivesaninsightintowhatastrugglelifecouldbeincolonialtimes.
