JUNE 7 (5:00 & 7:00)

PHOENIXDirector: Christian Petzold; Germany, 2014, 99 min; German with subtitles; rated GBoth a powerful allegory for post-war regeneration and a rich Hitchcockian tale of mistaken identity, PHOENIX’s setting is WWII and the heroine is a concentration camp survivor returning to Berlin in search of her lost husband. Disfigured by a gunshot wound as she made her way out of Auschwitz, former nightclub singer, Nelly (Nina Hoss), has inherited enough money to pay for an expensive plastic surgery operation. Nelly finds her husband, the pianist Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld); that he doesn’t recognize her, is one of several twists that subtly moves the story into thriller territory. —The Hollywood Reporter

MONDAY

JUNE 14 (5:00 & 7:00)

IRISDirector: Albert Maysles; USA, 2014, 83 minutesIRIS pairs the late, legendary documentarian Albert Maysles (‘Grey Gardens’) with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life’s sustenance and reminds us that life is nothing but an experiment. —Magnolia Pictures

CINDERELLA Director: Kenneth Branagh; USA, 2015, 106 min; rated G Cast: Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Richard MaddenWith Lily James of ‘Downton Abbey’ as our heroine and Cate Blanchett as the stepmother, this new version of the fairy tale plays it straight, daringly romantic and visually gorgeous When the King invites every maiden to a ball at which the Prince (Richard Madden, Game of Thrones) will choose his bride, Ella is left at home, finding transportation as well as transformation courtesy of her fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter)….Disney finally got Cinderella right — for now and, happily, ever after. —Time Magazine

JUNE 11, 12 & 13 (9:15 only)

THE RIOT CLUB Director: Lone Scherfig; UK, 2014, 107 min; 14A Cast: Douglas Booth, Holliday Grainger, Jessica Brown Findlay, Max Irons, Sam Claflin, Tom HollanderFilthy. Rich. Spoiled. Rotten. A band of privileged rich boys run wild in this savage satire of money, sex and power. At Oxford University, no society is more exclusive than The Riot Club. When he’s recruited to join, Miles (Max Irons) is about to get a taste of entitlement at its ugliest when a night of drinking and drugs spins out of control. —IFC Films

JUNE 17 & 18 (7:10 & 9:00)

MATT SHEPARD IS A FRIEND OF MINEDirector: Michele Josue; USA, 2014, 89 minutesAn intimate perspective on a public atrocity, this is director Michele Josue’s account of her youthful friendship with Matthew Shepard, the 21-year-old gay university student whose brutal 1998 torture and murder in Wyoming became a turning point in raising awareness of hate crimes against the LGBT community. Through her voice-over and intimate interviews with Shepard’s parents, a teacher and friends, we see Shepard as a gregarious, politically minded but vulnerable young man. —The Globe and Mail

JUNE 19 & 20 (7:00 & 9:10)

WOMAN IN GOLDDirector: Simon Curtis; USA/UK, 2015, 109 min; rated GCast: Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, Daniel Brühl, Tatiana MaslanyThe film recalls the legal battle, in the late 1990s, between a Los Angeles dress-shop owner named Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren) and the Austrian government for custody of a Gustav Klimt painting the Nazis stole from her family while excising the Jews of Vienna. This is a good, juicy, infuriating story withT a well-documented but extremely satisfying moral outcome. —Grantland

JUNE 24 & 25 (7:15 & 9:00)

SOME KIND OF LOVEDirector: Thomas Burstyn; Canada, 2015, 78 minutesFilmmaker Thomas Burstyn turns his inquisitive camera on his aunt and uncle: Yolanda Sonnabend, a London artist who resides in decaying splendor, and Joseph Sonnabend, an esteemed AIDS physician who’s returned to a house he hates and sister he can’t relate to. The enthralling result is a film about family relations, fractured sibling love, gender, art, science, diaspora and legacy. —Vancouver International Film Festival

WHILE WE’RE YOUNGDirector: Noah Baumbach; USA, 2015, 98 min; 14ACast: Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, Amanda Seyfried, Charles Grodin Two New York couples, one middle-aged and the other millennial and carefree, are in for a satirical skewering, but also something close to a hug. Josh and Cornelia (Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts) are in their 40s but not yet comfortable with adulthood. They’re befriended by twenty-something hipsters (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried), who seem to be completely fulfilled. —Toronto Star

JUNE 23 (7:00 & 9:10)

DOUBLE INDEMNITYBilly Wilder, USA, 1944, 107 minutesThis shrewd, tawdry thriller is one of the high points of 40s films. Barbara Stanwyck’s platinum blonde is perhaps the best acted of all the slutty, cold-blooded femme fatales of the film noir genre. Fred MacMurray is the patsy she ensnares in a plot to kill her husband. —Pauline Kael

june 28 (5:00 & 7:00)

SUGAR COATEDDirector: Michèle Hozer; USA, 2015, 90 minutesThis compelling investigative doc exposes the US sugar industry’s systematic hijacking of scientific study to bury evidence that sugar is, in fact, toxic. For 40 years, Big Sugar deflected threats to its multibillion-dollar empire through creative PR and tactics strikingly similar to the tobacco industry. As obesity rates skyrocket, the sugar industry has come under increasing scrutiny from emerging scientific and medical studies. Sugar Coated warns that we are sitting on a dietary time bomb. —Hot Docs 2015

juLY 1 (7:00 ONLY)

BEING CANADIANDirector: Robert Cohen; Canada, 2015, 90 minutesIn this playful and charming ode to Canadiana, Calgarian-turned-Hollywood comedy writing guru Robert Cohen (‘The Big Bang Theory’) comes home on an epic quest to rediscover Canada’s national identity. Shocked by how little his American friends know, Cohen’s mission is to dispel the stereotypes, misconceptions and absurd inaccuracies. Cohen crosses paths with Canadian comics Mike Myers, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Rick Mercer and Martin Short, musicians Rush and the Barenaked Ladies. A hilarious journey full of true patriot love. —Hot Docs 2015

juLY 2 (7:00 & 9:00) juLY 3 & 4 (7:10 & 9:15)

SUNSHINE ON LEITHDirector: Dexter Fletcher; UK, 2013, 96 min; rated GA sprightly and unabashed adaptation of the much-loved stage show, spinning a MAMMA MIA!-style narrative around the songs of the Proclaimers. We open in an armoured vehicle travelling through Afghanistan in which the assembled sing Sky Takes the Soul. From here we move to Edinburgh where our battle-worn heroes (George MacKay and Kevin Guthrie) attempt to rebuild their lives and loves…. I shed a tear within the first 10 minutes, and spent the rest of the movie beaming like a gibbering, love-struck fool. —The Guardian

Mia Wasikowska (“Tracks”) plays the tragic heroine, the listless wife of country doctor in provincial France.
