He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said.” Matthew 28:5-6 Do you remember the movie, Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks? He plays a FedEx employee named Chuck Noland, who is en route across the ocean, when the FedEx airplane he is on has a mechanical problem, and crashes into the sea. Noland, the sole survivor washes up on a deserted island, along with dozens of FedEx packages. One of the packages contains a volleyball which he uses as his new, make-believe friend, Wilson. Talk about the need we humans have for fellowship! And many of the other packages contain items which Noland uses for his survival. But one package Noland finds has angel wings on the outside, and Noland never opens the package the entire four years he spends on the island until he is rescued. We find out why at the end of the movie, when Noland personally delivers the package back to the sender. No one is home when he gets there, but he leaves a note, that says, "This package saved my life." Even though he never open the package, Noland claimed it saved his life. Why? Because it gave him hope. Hope that he would return home, hope that he would have a new life one day. This month culminates with the greatest of our Christian celebrations – Easter! The resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And this is THE event that defines our faith. For if the resurrection didn’t happen, then Jesus would have been just another baby boy born one December day, just another Jewish teacher traveling the countryside imparting words of wisdom, just another anti-establishment revolutionary who irritated the authorities until they finally executed him, and just another dead man laid to rest in peace. But obviously Jesus was much, much more – he was the Son of God. So what does that mean? It means we have hope. Because it means that his birth was the manifestation of God Himself coming to earth as one of us; it means his teachings are more than wisdom, they are divine truths; it means his death is the payment for our sins; and it means his resurrection is our assurance that new life is a reality, not just the plot of a movie, both here and now and forever in Kingdom of God. As theologian and Bishop N.T. Wright says, “Hope, for the Christian, is not wishful thinking or mere blind optimism. It is knowing (that) new things are possible, options are not shut down, and new creation can happen.” And so let us see this Easter as an opportunity to bring that new creation to our families, our workplaces, our social circles, our church. We, as Christians are Easter People – trusting, believing and living out hope. The hope that goodness is stronger than evil, that no amount of darkness can put out the light, that the way of love will overcome the way of hate in this world. In the above verse, the angel says to the women, “Do not be afraid.” And so let us not be afraid to usher in a new way of living – as those who bring hope, who bring love, compassion, patience, joy and peace to those around us. Let us share with the world, our joy and conviction, “He has risen!” ~ Pastor Rebecca

Thank you so much for your generous contributions to the Falmouth Service Center and to the homeless!!!

The Finance Committee has asked that we let you know quarterly in the bulletin where our donations have gone. This is in addition to this newsletter and the bulletin boards. Remember our $100,000 celebration in donations a few years ago? Remember by supporting UMCOR (ministry support), we contribute to missions there as well!

Our church's "Change the World" campaign has been successful! “Change the World” updates are: July – UMCOR (water project) - $139.51, August – Falmouth Service Center (backpacks) - $163.31, September – Pilgrim Church (Feed the Homeless Program) - $165.61, October – Maya Childcare, Inc. - $294.80, November – (baby care) - $250.04, and December – UMCOR (human trafficking) - $408.54. Check out our bulletin board in the fellowship hall for more information. If you have any suggestions for future programs to support through the "Change the World" campaign, please let a member know. THANK YOU!

Here are a few excerpts of thank you notes from organizations receiving our recent donations:

Upper Cape Chaplaincy – "Your donation, therefore, is not only very much needed, is most gratefully accepted. May God

continue to bless you and your congregation abundantly."

Pilgrim Church - "It was also a pleasure to have you have a group from your church participate in our outreach ministry a few

months ago. I hope that we will be able to host groups from your church again! Thank you again for your generosity. I'm

confident God will richly bless you for your faithfulness."

Cape Cares - "We are most grateful to you for your support of our efforts. It is support like yours that enables us to carry on our

work. As you may already know, the medical and dental services we provide can, for many people in Honduras, be the only

services to which they have access. We are thrilled that this year alone we sent nine teams comprised of 149 volunteers and

treated 6,047 patients."

Preachers' Aid Society of New England - "Thank you for your contribution. Your gift will strengthen the mission and enable us

to continue to identify and address the emerging needs of our retired and active pastors."

Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod - "On behalf of Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, we would like to extend our deepest

appreciation to you for your generous donation that allows us to continue to provide the opportunity of affordable

homeownership to those living in situations of critical housing need. This would not be possible without your steadfast support

and belief in our mission and work."

Heroes in Transition - "We hope that you feel the joy of directly helping our veterans. This is all possible because of the

generosity of you and many others. Thank you for your continued support and generosity! We are so very grateful!"

Maya Childcare, Inc. - "On behalf of the directors of Maya Childcare, Inc., and all the children, families, and staff of the Acorn

Childcare Center, I want to thank you for the generous donation from your "Changing the World" project and from the

missions. This contribution helps us provide high-quality preschool education, nourishing meals, and a safe and nurturing

environment for children living in extreme poverty in Guatemala."

Children's Cove - "We rely on thoughtful people like you to help us in our continuing work of serving children and families on

Cape Cod & the Islands. Over the past 18 years, we have provided services to 4,000 children and families. We are dedicated to

our commitment to prevent child abuse and ensure that the trauma endured by child victims and their families is reduced."

Falmouth Service Center - "... gratefully acknowledges your gift as a donation."

UMCOR - "It is through generous gifts from people like you that Global Ministries has been able to provide support for church

and community leadership development, educational, cross-cultural mission experiences for older adults, community-based

restorative justice programs to bring healing and systematic change, programs that protect and uphold migrant workers, and

programs that equip United Methodists around the world to respond to alcohol, drugs, and related violence."

CHURCH MOUSE

Okay, I'll be the first to say it! Who chose the colors for the Youth Room and the Sunday School bathrooms???? I'm sure Pastor Rebecca is responsible. (Of course!) I feel they're a little too bright for me, AND I wasn't asked for my input on the matter! So that got my feelings hurt and my first thought was to quit the church. And it would be too bad for all you if I did because you would have to find someone else to write my fabulous little column, which is effectively impossible. But then, the other night I had this dream where I had a "come to Jesus" meeting, and he kicked my little butt and reminded me it's really not about me. And all along, I thought it was. So now I'm back in the saddle and I want to apologize for spreading any discord and false rumors. (Pssst... pssst... hopefully Jesus can't hear me at this moment, but I still think the color "off white" would have been the better choice.) Speaking of the youth and children, I must say we have a really great group of kids. First of all, they all do a fabulous job every month when they serve as ushers and liturgists. And they do so many other cool things, like the MLK Day of Service and making us delicious subs sandwiches. All of them are special in so many ways! But this month I have to give special kudos to Miranda VanMooy. She won a competitive dance audition, and as a result gets two weeks away from mom and dad... err, I mean gets two weeks away at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet Academy, where she will hone her dancing skills, while missing mom and dad very much. Congrats to you Miranda! You didn't know the church mouse loved ballet and is member of your fan club, did you? (I'm really a very sensitive mouse in touch with my feminine side.) Oh, and speaking of instruction, can somebody instruct Brian Harbison on how to eat popcorn. So much of it misses his mouth and lands on the floor. Good for me, bad for the cleanup crew! Ha! Thinking about cleanup, I've never had the opportunity to talk up our wonderful sexton, John Loewen. Only a few people around here ever get to see him. Is he real?? Of course he is, and let me tell you, he's at the church very early, mopping the floors, vacuuming, emptying the trash, cleaning and polishing, etc., just doing a great job, especially considering all the things going on around here. So make sure you all clean up after yourselves. (That means you, Allison!) Let's be considerate of John and not make his job any harder. But here's the real reason I like him so much. I once heard him tell someone this... A young man came to church the other day to free his soul from sin; He was looking for the preacher, but Pastor Rebecca wasn't in (again!!). Our sexton then assured him, that there'd be no use in waiting, "The preacher's gone away," he said, "to do more holidaying." The young man asked for Laura or Allison - the next in line would do. "Sorry," said our sexton, "they are missing, too!" "Well, what I want to know," he said, "and I'll make myself quite clear, While they're off gallivanting, who's running things down here? "Who's taking care of John Wesley? Who's leading folks in prayer? Who's helping all the lost sheep that wander by right here? Our sexton is a wise man, and with a twinkle in his eye, He looked at the young man and scratched his head, and this was his reply: "Son, what I'm going to say to you might strike you kinda odd, But since no one's here to help you, talk to their boss, and put your question up to God." So the man went in the chapel and bowed his knee in prayer. "O Lord," he prayed, "please tell me, who's running things down here?" The Lord sent down an angel - and it's enough to make me sob - The angel said, "The church mouse, and he's doing a fantastic job!" Eeks!! I think I may be called into another "come to Jesus" meeting for that. Hopefully, I'll see you all next month if I'm lucky.

A special shout out to Carrie & Tim Leonard, Lynn O’Brien, Anthony Watkins, Laura Ware, Amy Clatanoff-Brown and the K-2 Sunday School class for their help! Again, thank you for supporting your Youth Group!

Welcome Baby Bag Ministry Did you know that every month 35 or more babies are born at Falmouth Hospital? Often at that time of life young parents begin thinking of finding a church for their families and of course we would like them to make John Wesley UMC their church home. The Invitation and Hospitality Focus Group of Vision 20/20 decided to act on a very good idea brought to us by Marie Syverson a dedicated member of the John Wesley family.

Marie was part of a Welcome Baby project at her former church. Every parent of a newborn received a Welcome Baby bag of gifts and an invitation to church. Vision 20/20 knows a good idea when we see one!

This new ministry will begin with a Baby Shower on April 2nd at 1:00 pm in the fellowship hall. SAVE THE DATE! Our goal for the next twelve months is to invite to church every new mother who delivers her baby at Falmouth Hospital. We’ll extend our invitation with a “Welcome Baby!” gift.

Join the Crafters for a Lenten Project: The Monday Morning Crafters invite you to join us for a special Lenten season activity. Every Monday from 10 until noon from February 15th through March 28th we will begin our gatherings with a devotional moment. Then we will put our hands to work for God by knitting and sewing for the Welcome Baby Bag project. Please join us and share your talents. We will provide the yarn and pattern. Please bring your knitting needles, scissors and pinking shears. We gratefully accept donations of scrap yarn and flannel cloth. Good with a sewing machine? Come learn how you can help! For more information email Linda Duane, [email protected] or Karen Tierney [email protected].

The YMCA, Cupid Shuffle and Conga Line were in full effect.

“Prayer becomes living prayer when we pray our lives, rather than say our prayers.” As disciples of Christ, we all want to grow closer to God. And as our church undertakes many new programs and efforts to love God, love others, and serve the world, it is even more important that we immerse our decisions and our work in prayer. So during this Lenten season, let us strive to bring prayer into every aspect of our lives and work, individually and as a congregation. The Spiritual Growth ministry wants to give you every opportunity to do that, so please join us for any or all of these special prayer events during Lent:

• Experience prayer with your body, mind and spirit in special sessions of Yoga with Grace for Lent. (Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m.)

• Bring your concerns to God and take the time to listen for His response at a Silent Prayer Retreat. (March 19, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.)

• Participate in a time of prayer and fasting. Plan to fast after dinner on Maundy Thursday, and let us break the fast together on Good Friday at 6pm with soup and salad. More information to come.

• Check out Pam Paquette's weekly posts about Living Prayer on Facebook • Volunteer for the prayer ministry team, the prayer chain, or as a Prayer Buddy for our children and youth.

“The dynamic of prayer is communion with God. The goal of prayer is a life of friendship and fellowship with God, cooperating with the Spirit, living God’s will in the world. … [B]e intentional about moving from your specific time

of prayer into a life of prayer by consciously seeking to relate all of life to God.” ~ Maxie Dunnam, The Workbook of Living Prayer.

Do You Know About Our Nursing Home Ministry? One of the longest running ministries at John Wesley UMC is the Nursing Home Ministry which started in 1979 with three participants including the minister’s wife, Suzie Daley, who accompanied the group on her ukulele.

Thirty-six years later this valuable and vibrant ministry brings hymn singing and uplifting readings to three nursing homes every month. Currently the group is visiting JML the 2nd Friday, Woodbriar and Royal on Main Street the 3rd Friday and Royal Megansett the 4th Friday.

These days the musical accompaniment is electronic and the residents sing or follow along with song books. The entire service is about 45 minutes leaving the John Wesley volunteer ministers feeling joyful, blessed and appreciated. Every service ends with an energetic singing of “God Bless America”.

If you are interested in learning more and possibly joining this group, contact Pat Dinsmore 508-540-2183 or email [email protected]

March, 2016

The Nursing Home Ministry group is Betty Smith, Lynne Brown, Pat Dinsmore, Mabel Fofonoff (who has been a participant since the beginning,) Marion Warburton, Elisa Roche and George McFarland.

Announcements Thank you, Jan Brooks, Louise Bailey, and Marie Syverson for putting together last month’s newsletter for us!

Pastor Rebecca and John will be on a family vacation from the afternoon of March 6th – Friday, March 11th.

We will be celebrating a baptism on Sunday, March 13th. If you would like you or your child to be baptized, please see Pastor Rebecca.

Thank You to Betty Bailey! For all her years of ministry of taking minutes for our Church Council meetings. At 93 years old, she deserves to step down and let someone else fill this role. If you are willing to help God and John Wesley in this position, please see Pastor Rebecca. It is a commitment of no more than 10 – 12 times per year, and is important for us to keep records of our discussions and decisions.

You will notice yellow prayer cards in the pews in the sanctuary, and on the table in back of the chapel. If you would like yourself or a loved one to be prayed for, please fill it out and drop it in the offering plate, or in the mailbox outside the office, and it will be given to Pastor Rebecca. There are three options: 1) for the Pastor only – confidential, 2) Prayer chain – confidential, 3) Prayer list in the bulletin.

Don’t forget—our next Falmouth Eats Together is Thursday, March 10th at 4pm. You are welcome to come and eat. And if you would like to help, please contact Bonnie or Tim Valade at (508) 563-9578.

The Men's Breakfast and Discussion Group will be on Tuesday, March 19th at 7:30am at Persy’s Place. All men are invited to share in breakfast and informal discussion of one of Pastor Rebecca's sermons. The cost, including meal, coffee, and gratuity is $10. A sign-up sheet will be in the Narthex. Any questions, contact John Mincieli at 508-776-8653.

In the event of a major snowstorm and we have to cancel our worship services, we will post the cancellation on our website, www.johnwesleyumc.org, through Constant Contact, and on the local radio stations WQRC – 99.9, Ocean 104.7, Classical 107.5, WCOD – 106.7, Cape Country 104. Our primary concern is safety for our church family, so please use prudence and common sense in deciding whether to attend.

A Note from Linda Duane

The three little words, "I thank you" can never express my gratitude to all you wonderful people at JWUMC for all the cards, calls, visits, meals, rides and most of all prayers and concern you showed me while I was going through my knee surgery and recovery. I am truly blessed to be a part of this wonderful church family. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. God Bless and lots of love,

Linda Duane

Please take a few minutes and look at the Coffee Hour sign up sheets in the Fellowship Hall and

PLEASE, PLEASE sign up to host one in the upcoming months.

Remember to keep it simple; ask a friend to host with you and please ask me any questions or if you need help. Lets keep this wonderful fellowship gathering a must. If everyone took a turn or donated goodies we will

be able to have a great time every Sunday after a great church experience. Thank you very much.

Linda Duane, 508-457-4407

Permanent Endowment Fund Awards

Applications are now being received for the 2015 Permanent Endowment Fund Awards. These awards are for the purpose of supporting initiatives in Church ministry and outreach. In the past, awards have supported programs including Missions, Education, Bible Study, Church Leadership, and Youth Projects. Applications should be in the form of a letter stating the amount requested, the purpose for which the request is made, and the benefits expected to accrue from the award. Applications should be addressed to the Permanent Endowment Fund Committee and delivered to the Church Office.

The deadline for applications is April 30th.

My Daily Walk

I take my two mile walk each day

Alone, with God, so I can pray.

I thank Him for all He has done For me since my life has begun.

I pray for family, friends and foe, And for those whom I do not know.

I ask forgiveness from all sin To make my soul content within.

I pray for those needy and ill, For those who aim to do God’s will.

For those who suffer from a loss, For all who have to bear a cross.

For John Wesley members I pray, Give thanks for each and every day.

For all my blessings big and small, I thank God for them, one and all.
