‘WESSEX WAYS’ APRIL 2019 VEHICLE OF THE MONTH The Honda Cub (latterly known as the Super Cub) has been in continuous production since 1958, and over 100 million of them have been sold all over the world. It has a simple pressed steel monocoque frame and a four-stroke single cylinder engine, originally of just 49cc capacity and later increased by stages to 125cc. The gearbox is a semi- automatic unit with 3 or 4 speeds. Power available ranges from 4.5 to 9.1bhp, allowing a maximum speed of 43mph with the original 49cc engine, and nearly 70mph with the latest models. CHAIRMAN'S CHATTER Hi Everyone, Well here we are - the clocks have robbed us of an hour’s sleep and it would appear that the government has robbed us of what most wanted concerning Brexit; so much for democracy! Back to more things that concern us: the last car night was well attended and it would appear that all enjoyed the bingo, although both Mo and myself find it difficult to find anything different for prizes, and as no one ever suggests anything else it would seem that you all think that they are ok. The Club has suffered its fair share of members who have passed on during the past few weeks and I would like to take this opportunity to pass on our deepest sympathy to all those who have been personally affected. You will see an application form for the Cream Tea Run at the end of the newsletter; as always we trust you will support this event as you always do. Well that's me done so you all ride and drive with care. Doug. Page 1. WESSEX VEHICLE PRESERVATION CLUB FOUNDED 1971 www.wvpc.org.uk

CHAIRMAN'S CHATTER

Hi Everyone, Well here we are - the clocks have robbed us of an hour’s sleep and it would appear that the government has robbed us of what most wanted concerning Brexit; so much for democracy!

Doug.

A MESSAGE FOR THE BIKERS.

I have been told on numerous occasions that there is never any content in this magazine for the bike section, plus it would appear that some of you feel that if you are a member of the Bloxworth Club then you can just come along and join in with a bit of a chat and take advantage of the meal deal that was originally for Wessex Club Members only. I cannot remember that this has ever been changed, but at the end of the day if you feel you cannot afford the £15 single membership then that is for you to come to terms with! I will be having a meeting with the Chairman of the Bloxworth Club to try and sort out the problem as it’s not fair on those who are prepared to join the club.

Back to my first thought about the content, if you want to read more about the Bike section then you all have to decide if you want to send in the odd article to be included or at least send the editor a suggestion for the vehicle of the month to appear on the front cover, so at the end of the day its partly down to you all. That is all I can say about the subject; just one other thing - when the bike section was first started we used to do things and arrange the odd speaker for club night, so that might be a thought - any ideas? Doug.

Editor’s comment – The last time a bike featured as Vehicle Of The Month was August 2018, and before that March 2018. As I have no knowledge of bikes, any articles are reliant on either something submitted by the members, or what can be copied from the internet.

A COUPLE OF LOCAL EVENTS TO WHICH WE ARE INVITED TO ATTEND.

These are a couple of little events that would be glad to see a few of us put in an appearance, so if you could jot down the dates and if you are at a loose end on the day then just pop along and show your face - you will be sure of a warm welcome:- Ferndown Fete In The Field is on Saturday 22nd June, and West Moors Show that takes place in The Fryer Playing Field is on Saturday 13th July; I think you have to be in by 11am but more details will be available nearer the time. Doug.

NORTON FACTORY TOUR

I have now got the details and the cost of a trip to the Norton Motorcycle Factory. At the present time they are undergoing a form of re-structuring in the factory so there are no tours taking place, so I will have to get in touch again later in the year, but I have continued to gather the rest of the information including the cost and it works out as follows:-

If we can get 22 members the cost of the tour, inclusive of coach travel, will be £41.50 per head. If we are lucky enough to get 30 members the price will be £37.00. At the moment I cannot give a precise date but I thought that September would be a good time as most of you should have taken your holidays by then. I must stress that this will only take place if there is enough interest as a sizeable deposit will be required. If I get a reasonable amount of interest but require a few more bodies to make up the numbers, I may offer it to other clubs. Doug

ROB TAYLOR

We have received the sad news that Rob Taylor has passed away. He was a regular supporter of the club and a dedicated Jaguar owner.

CARSCAPES – MOTORING AND THE HISTORIC LANDSCAPE – AN ARTICLE FROM AN

OLD ‘CURRENT ARCHEOLOGY’ MAGAZINE by Chris Catling.

PART 2

Municipal car parks The switch to outdoor parking was a long time coming, but has arguably had a far larger impact on the historic environment even

than roads. Birmingham led the way, allocating 22 official street parking places in 1922. Liverpool followed with 24 spaces in

1924. Little by little, the car began to appear in every street and square. Badged attendants patrolled parking areas, making sure

the cars were not stolen or vandalised in return for a gratuity. Page 2.

The Listed Lex Garage on Soho’s Brewer Street was built in Gateshead Trinity Square carpark loomed over the river Tyne opposite the centre of

1928; the planned golf course on the roof was never built. Newcastle from 1969 until it was demolished in 2010, having famously served as a symbol For all that was bad about the criminal underworld in the 1971 film ‘Get Carter.’

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Have you ever wondered what happened to all those RLHZ ‘Green Goddesses’ that the Government used to bring out from time to time in emergencies? According to the Bedford Enthusiasts Club magazine, many were exported to Iceland and at least seven survive in preservation over there.
