Our parents, James and Valma Bader opened Bader & Sons Co., in St. Louis
in 1988. Together, they grew the business to more than 20 employees. When James passed away in March of 2000, we took over the reins. Over the next 17 years the business grew from one to 10 stores throughout Michigan — stretching from Tecumseh in the south east, to as far north as Lake City, and now West Branch.
It is a Bader tradition to provide our customers with quality services, sales and parts. Many of the Bader family work in the stores helping farmers, land owners and their families plant, harvest, plow, grow gardens and stunning lawns.
Today, the dealership employs 250+ Michiganders. Working together, the experienced team sells and services the long green line of John Deere Equipment. We also offer attach-ments and parts. STIHL handheld outdoor equipment and Manitou telehandlers are also sold at all locations.

Smarter Combines: Introducing the New Active Yield™ System
When the ActiveYield™ System is enabled and the Terrain Compensation Module in the Starfire™ receiver has been calibrated, ActiveYield is ready to go to work. As grain is har-vested and enters the tank, the three sensors within the tank collectively measure the grain as it piles over the cross auger covers. If all conditions are acceptable (header and separa-tor on, grain is flowing, machine level within 4 degrees) load collection occurs from 2000-6000 lbs. Stored calibration loads are replaced by new ones as the system collects data. The system may be disabled at any time if manual yield cali-bration is desired.

Transmission and Hydraulic Oil
Choosing the right lubricant can be the difference between expensive repairs and unproductive down-time, or a trouble-free life for your equipment. Tractors and mowers by their very nature see use in a wide-range of conditions that are dusty, dirty, often wet and have exposure to the elements. Along with the strain placed on the moving components, lubricants should be considered as a first-line of defense.
Viscosity and Oil Types Most riding mowers are air cooled, so they can use both multi and single-viscosity oils. John Deere suggests that 10W-30 be used in all gasoline powered engines, including riding mowers. The “W” indicates that the oil was tested at low air tem-peratures. A 10W-30 weight engine oil is viscous (having a thick, sticky consistency between solid and liquid) at tempera-tures as low as negative four degrees Fahrenheit. Motor oil viscosity refers to how thick it is at a given temperature. If you
use your mower in the winter for chores like snow removal, use multi-viscosity oil. If your machine is parked until spring, a standard single-viscosity will be just fine. Always refer to your owner’s manual for recommendations.

After improving the inside and service areas, the next project according to owners Paul and Mark Bader was to “re-design the front of the store to add more display area and add additional space for parts storage.”
The result is a new look which includes a covered porch so customers can shop for the latest mowers, tractors and Gators while protected from the elements. The old porch was removed with John Deere equipment (above right) and the front entrance was moved from the center of the building to the north. As the project nears completion, store manager Dave Meyers says “customers like the new look, and we are fortunate to have a better layout for loading and unloading equipment and parts.
Jerry French, parts manager says he is pleased with the remodel, and will be “happy when it snows” as he won’t have to “shovel the white stuff from the ‘ol porch anymore.”
The Rosebush location also has a large attached SERVICE building to the north, a full-line-up of STIHL products, and John Deere gear, toys, pedal tractors and collectibles.

1). Dispose of old fuel and change the oil. Failing to empty the fuel tank can lead to a clogged carburetor and overall degraded mowing performance. 2). Check the air filter. If you cannot see light through it, it is dirty and needs to be replaced. 3). Change the spark plugs if its been over a year. 4). Sharpen dull blades or buy new ones to keep your grass healthy. 5). Tighten and check bolts, cables, wheels and belts. Keeping an eye on mower parts before you get too busy can avoid spring issues. Need help? Snow Plowing Tips • Power Up – Most small lawn tractors are
not a great choice for plowing. Their trans-mission aren’t strong enough to handle the strain of sticky wet snow. You may wish to upgrade to something more substantial.
• Get a Good Blade – If plowing larger
areas, pay attention to the angle of your blade. Angle to one side or the other while clearing and then straighten to clean-up and push into snow banks.
• Accessorize – Winter is a great
time to accessorize your tractor. Tire chains, weights and a warm cab can really come in handy.
• Push it Clear – Be prepared for
snow piles to stay around for a while. Push banks further away than necessary to allow for more pile-up as the season progresses.
• Height Matters – Set your
blade to the right height off the ground. This is especially important if the ground isn’t frozen … go too deep and you could dig up your gravel or grass.
• Take It Slow – Especially in heavy, wet
snow you’ll need to take your time. Don’t push your tractor too quickly. If the snow is deep, it’s better to take multiple passes (lowering the blade each time) rather than trying to clear all the snow in one push.
• Protect Your Transmission – Plowing
can be hard on your tractor, particularly the transmission. You can help prevent damage by coming to a complete stop before shifting from forward to reverse. Accelerate slowly and don’t ride the clutch. Also, change your transmission fluid periodically.
• Be Visible – Strive to plow snow during
daylight hours when possible. If you must plow in the evening, always use your head-lights and be aware of your surroundings.
• Bundle Up – Layers are your friend,
especially when having to shovel.
• Be Generous – Snowplowing can be a
great way to show some kindness to your neighbors.

The Manitou Red Tour Hits Michigan
An event organized by Manitou Americas to promote its line of agricultural equipment made a stop in Portland, MI. It was an “open-door day” called THE RED TOUR, giving customers an opportunity to test telehandlers and accessories. The event was spotlighted in the current issue of the international magazine, “Manitou Life.” The article included pictures of Bader & Sons Co., Manitou salesmen, Terry Mitchell. The “sold-out tour” traveled with four trucks loaded with equipment including a MLT 625, MLT 634, and MLT 840 and 26 different accessories.
In addition, the online magazine “Pro Contractor Rentals” noted that “Manitou named Bader & Sons Co., a top dealer for Transport Equipment Sales.” Terry says, “we are growing every year in all areas including sales, Manitou parts and service.”
