Legislative – Jim Gladstone/Eric Thompson: At the recent State meeting, discussion was held regarding how membersrepresentABATE.FilmclipshownfromOrlandonews,whichinferredbyfalsestatementsthatmoniesgiventoABATEweretaxpayerdollarsandthatthismoneyhasbeenspentfoolishlyonsafetyproducts.WeneedtorememberwhatABATEisaboutandwhyweareallmembersofABATE.
Stifferpenaltiesbilldidnotmakeittotheagenda.Somemembersofthehouse/senatekeptreferringto“whatifthepersoninvolved in the accident were Tim Tebow? Would he have to be prosecuted if he killed a motorcyclist in one of theseaccidents?”.Ouranswertothisisthelawshouldapplytoequallytoall.

SafetyTip:CrashAvoidance
Nomatterhowcarefulyouare,therewillbetimeswhenyoufindyourselfinatightspot.Yourchancesofgettingoutsafelydependonyourabilitytoreactquicklyandproperly.Often,acrashoccursbecauseariderisnotpreparedorskilledincrash
avoidancemaneuvers.Knowwhenandhowtostoporswerve,twoskillscriticalinavoidingacrash.Itisnotalwaysdesirableorpossibletostopquicklytoavoidanobstacle.Ridersmustalsobeabletoswervearoundanobstacle.Determiningwhichskillisnecessaryforthesituationisimportantaswell.Studiesshowthatmostcrashinvolvedriders:
⋅ Underbrake‐thefronttireandoverbraketherear.⋅ Did not separate braking from swerving or did not choose swerving when it was appropriate. The following
informationofferssomegoodadvice.QuickStops
Tostopquickly,applybothbrakesatthesametime.Don’tbe shy about using the front brake, but don’t “grab” it,
either.Squeezethebrakeleverfirmlyandprogressively.Ifthefrontwheellocks,releasethefrontbrakeimmediatelythen reapply it firmly. At the same time, press downon
therearbrake.Ifyouaccidentallylocktherearbrakeonagood traction surface, you can keep it locked until youhave completely stopped; but, even with a locked rear
wheel,youcancontrolthemotorcycleonastraightawayifitisuprightandgoinginastraightline.
StoppingQuicklyinaCurve
Ifyouknowthetechnique,usingbothbrakesinaturnispossible,althoughitshouldbedoneverycarefully.Whenleaningthemotorcyclesomeofthetractionisusedforcornering.Lesstractionisavailableforstopping.Askidcanoccurifyouapplytoo
muchbrake.Also,using the frontbrake incorrectlyona slippery surfacemaybehazardous.Use cautionand squeeze thebrake lever,nevergrab. Ifyoumuststopquicklywhile turning inacurve, first straightenandsquare thehandlebars, then
stop.Ifyoufindyourselfinasituationthatdoesnotallowstraighteningfirst,suchaswhenthereisadangerofrunningofftheroadinaleft‐handcurve,orwhenfacingoncomingtrafficinaright‐handcurve,applythebrakessmoothlyandgradually.Asyouslow,youcanreduceyour leanangleandapplymorebrakepressureuntil themotorcycle isstraightandmaximum
brake pressure can be applied. Always straighten the handlebars in the last few feet ofstoppingtomaintainyourbalanceandremainupright.
MaximumStraight‐LineBraking
Maximumstraight‐linebrakingisaccomplishedbyfullyapplyingfrontandrearbrakeswithoutlockingeitherwheel.Keepyourbodycenteredoverthemotorcycleandlookwellahead,not
down.Thiswillhelpyoukeepthemotorcycleinasstraightalineaspossible,minimizingleanangleandthelikelihoodofthewheelslosingtraction

Ifthefrontwheellocks,releasethefrontbrakeimmediatelyandcompletely.Reapplythebrakesmoothly.Frontwheelskidsresult in immediate lossofsteeringcontrolandbalance.Failuretofullyreleasethebrakelever immediatelywillresult ina
crash.
Rear‐WheelSkids
Askiddingreartireisadangerousconditionthatcanresultinaviolentcrashandseriousinjuryordeath.Toomuchrearbrakepressurecausesrearwheellockup.Assoonastherearwheellocks,yourabilitytochangedirectionislost.Toregaincontrolthebrakemustbereleased.However,iftherearwheelisoutofalignmentwiththefront,thereisariskofahigh‐sidecrash.
Thisoccurswhen thewheels areoutof alignmentanda locked rearwheel is released. Themotorcycle canabruptly snapuprightandtumble,throwingtheriderintotheairaheadofthemotorcycle’spath.Evenslightmisalignmentcanresultinahigh side crash. Every rider should try topractice these techniques ina safeand controlledenvironment.Practicing these
maneuverscanpotentiallysaveyourlifeandthelifeofyourpassenger.Knowinghowtobrakeproperlyisaveryimportantskillweshouldallpractice.Bettertoknowyourlimitationsandskilllevelonacoursethanonthestreet.

view.⋅ Ifthisisnotpossible,parkyourbikeclosetoyourroom.
⋅ Keepaneyeonyourbike.Whenparkingatapublicevent,checkyourmotorcycleperiodically,especiallyimmediatelyafterleavingyour bike, to make sure there are no suspicious individualslurkingabout.
⋅ Ifparkinginagarage,blockyourbikewithautomobiles,closethegaragedoorandmakesureitislocked.
⋅ Don’t store your title in your bike’s storage compartment, tankbagorsaddlebag.Thesafestplaceforyourtitleisathome.
⋅ Uniquely mark and then photograph your bike. If thieves takeyourbike,noteitsuniquemarkingstolawenforcementusingthephotosyouhavetaken.
⋅ Keepyourbike registrationand insurance identification cardonyouwhenyouride.

⋅ It isn’tnecessary thatyouprovideabuyerwith the title rightaway.Awrittendocumentsignedby thesellerandbuyerindicatingpriceandmethodofpaymentcanserveasproofofpurchase.Youcanforwardthetitletothebuyeroncethecheckhasclearedthebank.
