THE winter winds certainly put paid to the

planned lantern parade at the Marine Lake lastmonth. But the organisers were not deterred

and managed to stage the event at the more

    sheltered United Reformed Church instead.

This month weve got lots of festive whats

on news, details of a Christmas festival at the

    Methodist Church, Ally McDermotts interior

design column, books by Linghams of West Kirby

and news of some bulb planting at Hilbre High.We hope you enjoy the magazine and please

remember to use your local shops and trades

    people!

Wed like to wish you all a very merry Christmas

    and a prosperous new year.

If they hadnt scored, we wouldve won - Howard Wilkinson

With Christmas fast approaching and allthoughts turning to presents and food, Ithought Id write a few ideas of my own1. I you are having guests to stay then maybe the sparebedroom might need a little makeover. Crisp new

bedding, a throw at the oot o the bed and a moremodern table lamp might smarten up the room2. Te new Bio Fires are greator creating a ame eatureeither indoors or outdoors, and perect or a wall with nochimney. Tey run on bioetha-nol so require no connectionto gas or electricity.3. Smarten up those dining

chairs. Many chairs have seatpads that can be removed quiteeasily. ake a length o abric,a staple gun- and voila! Ideal i your seat

pads are the original white calico and maybe looking alittle scrufy.4.My mother still changes her curtains rom sum-mer to winter, but changing cushions and adding atextured throw can also create a more cosy room overthe bleak winter months.5.ake time to wrap those presents. I love lots o

ribbon and tie into them sweets, whisky mini-atures, decorative soaps. Much nicer than just

cellotape and a label. It can make thesimplest present look like much

more thought has gone into it.Check Abakhan or great selection

o ribbon6. I you cant put on an amazing

array o lights on the outside o your

house and drain the National Grid ,then add a simple wreath to your ront

door. Decorate with some inexpensivegold ribbon and a ew baubles.7.Scented tealights are antastic at thistime o year- pine, cranberry and theChristmas Memories. Most supermar-kets will have a good selection8.Dont orget the bathroom- a littlebowl o baubles, some red hand tow-

els, a scented tealight in a Christmasholder and...9.Christmas loo roll. Its a one ofChristmas extravagance and un. Tisis rom www.dotcomgitshop.com10.Last but by no means least, aChristmas tree, no matter how smallor what colour, it just doesent eel likeChristmas without a tree.

Christmas is a holiday that persecutes the lonely, the frayed, and the rejected - Jimmy Cannon

    LAST month saw the rst

    of many future events

    involving a collaboration

    between Hilbre High

    School Humanities

    College and Hoylake

    and West Kirby Rotary

    (HAWK).

    The event was the rst

stage of a celebrationof the highly successful

    End Polio Now campaign,

    championed by Rotary

    International. The Rotary

    Club has been spending

    last month planting Purple

    Crocus bulbs throughout

    the country that will ower

    in February during End

    Polio Now week. The

    purple symbolises the

tiny dab of colour on a

    childs little nger that

    indicates that they have

    been inoculated against

the Polio virus.Hilbre High has recently

    set up a Rotary Interact

    club, a club run entirely

    by the students but

    supported by the local

    Rotary club (HAWK), to

    run charitable activities.

    On Friday, the group,

    along with students

    from Hilbres Resource

    Base planted crocus

    blubs in the school

    grounds in the company

    of Barbara Sinclair, the

    Chair of HAWK and

    Gwyn Dryhurst-Dodd,the District Governor.

    The event was a huge

    success and both the

    Rotary Club and Hilbre

    High are looking forward

    to the bulbs owering in

    February.

    Hilbre High goes through

    a real purple patch!

He who has not Christmas in his heart will never nd it under a tree - Roy L. Smith

    Fiction: February Lisa Moore

If yure lking fr a gd nvel t give smene fr Christmas hy nt try this

Its main character, Helen oMara, as ne f thse left behind hen her

il rig ges dn and Helen begins t emerge frm her grief t meet a ne life.

A beautiful, althugh at times harring nvel, February is pignant, gently

amusing and heart arming. Highly recmmended.

Autobiography: I must collect Myself- Maureen Lipman

This sparkling cllectin f stries, reminiscences and jkes, interspersed ithriginal and inventive mnlgues intrduces us t all kinds f unfrgettable

characters. Theres the excitable annabe auditining in Brittneys Gt Talent,

Sheila the unintentinally smutty art tutr, the bitter American army ife suffering

in the Hme Cunties and many thers, all illustrated ith sme nderful

phtgraphs f the authr herself bringing her characters t life.

Maureen Lipmans appeal lies in the fact that she is s nrmal and rdinary,

experiencing grief and happiness in the same ays that e d. Her talent is t

be able t cllect thse experiences and share them ith us in a ay hich e

can recgnize and identify ith. A lvely arm and human bk.

Local interest: Hoylake: A history of the Links- Anthony Shone

If yu have a glf enthusiast in the family this is the bk fr him/her, beautifully

presented in a glssy hardback. It is the stry f Hylake Glf Curse, taking

up t the present day. There is a sectin n

greenkeeping and eclgy and an appendix n

the champinships, all illustrated ith stunning

holistic expert with 25 years ofexperience in her eld. She is the

Chair for the British Association of

    Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology, a

    professional association established

over 30 years ago and representing

    thousands of therapists throughout

    the UK.

    Her expertise is called on

to examine students for aninternational examination board in

many areas of the world. Angela

is also part of the HABIA forum,

    helping to make decisions for

    qualications and standards in the

    UK beauty industry.

    Angela is a successful column

writer for the trade journals Vitality

and Salonfocus and has a beauty, holistic and skin care clinic.

    Q. I keep reading about gel nails, but can you tell me whatthey are as I really have no idea?!

    A. Gel nails usually describes the application of a self-

levelling, gel-like substance which is applied to the nail plate

with a brush and then cured into a hard non-chip coating with

    an ultra-violet lamp.

I nd the majority of people having gel nails prefer a gel

overlay to give strength to weak or fragile nails, as a strong

coating for clients wanting to grow their nails or just to give a

professional just manicured nish for a longer length of time

than can ever be achieved with a nail varnish. It is a fairly quick procedure and can provide a clear,

French effect or coloured varnish effect depending

on client preference. They are great for holidays,

weddings or for a perfect manicured look without

the effort of reapplying nail varnish.

A degree of maintenance is required if you are

looking to have them for some time. As the nail

grows a gap will be left around the cuticle area

so every 2-3 weeks another application needs to

be done. Then, after 4-5 weeks the gel is usually

soaked off and a fresh application can be carried

    out if desired.

    Q. Can I still be slim in my forties and still maintain

    a youthful face?

    A. Ageing of the face relies on so many factors,

not just how much weight you carry! However,

ladies in their forties who carry a small amount of

extra weight will have more fatty tissue to support

facial tissue which may give them a more youthfulappearance.

It is important to remember that weight can has

many negative side effects so maintaining a healthy

body weight is important. The inclusion of oily

sh, nuts and seeds in the diet provide healthy oils

which is good for your skin and general health.

Most importantly yo-yo dieting is the most

important thing to avoid as you age. When you gain

weight the skin is stretched and when you loose

weight the ageing skin with its loss of elasticity willnot snap back as it once did when you were in

your 20s, giving rise to facial folds.
