Power Hour FAQ Why is our school utilizing Power Hour? Power Hour makes it possible for you to get the support you

need in your classes during the school day, but it also affords you the opportunity to make decisions about how to use time.

What can I do during Power Hour? Where can I go? Power Hour is all about making good decisions. Here are a few choices:

● attend academic sessions with your teachers in their classrooms (catch up, get ahead, make up assignments, help a classmate, talk with your teacher)

● work on assignments in the media center ● participate in intramurals in the gym ● hang out or study in a classroom ● attend a club meeting

Page 21: West Craven High School Student/Parent Handbook 2018 - 2019...Craven County Board of Education further believes that the use of illegal drugs and other substances has a detrimental

WCHS Parent Student Handbook 2018-19 21

● Utilize tables inside and outside the school to meet with friends/work on assignments

Can I hang out in the cafeteria the whole time? No. You may eat in the cafeteria during lunch A or B but you can’t stay there all 60 minutes.

What locations can I hang out in during Eagle Power Hour? During Eagle Power Hour there are plenty of options for spaces to enjoy if you are not attending an academic session. If you are eating lunch you may eat, study, and socialize in the cafeteria, 100 hallway, back terrace, or a teacher’s classroom with your teacher’s permission. The media center is also a location that you may utilize as a quiet area to work and meet with study groups.

Can I leave campus for lunch? Where on campus may I eat? No, we do not permit students to leave campus for lunch. Doing so is one way to ruin Power Hour for everyone. You may eat in the cafeteria, a teacher’s classroom or designated indoor/outdoor spaces. As always clean up your trash.

What is an academic session? Any time you choose to perform academic work in an academic location, that’s a designated academic session. Academic sessions might mean getting a little extra help from your teacher, completing homework assignments, makeup tests/quizzes, collaborating with partners on a project, or typing a paper, etc.

Do I have to attend academic sessions? How often?

If your average falls below 75%, your teacher will require you to attend academic sessions until you have escaped that danger zone. Each class (Civics and Econ, Eng. 1, Eng 2, etc.) will have a day designated during the week where students whose grade is below a 75% are required to attend one 30 minute academic session.

How will I keep track of my teacher’s availability for academic sessions?

Your teachers will help you fill out your Power Hour planner. The teacher’s schedule will also be posted outside their classrooms.

Can I hang out in my teacher’s room, even if I don’t want my teacher’s help?

That’s up to the teacher, but, yes, we encourage it. Just respect the work the teacher and other students are doing while you’re there. They reserve the right to remove you if you become disruptive.

Do I have to attend an Academic Session if the teacher requests it?

Yes, if the teacher requests your presence, you must attend, even if your average is above a 75%. Most likely the teacher will use this time for you to make up assignments/tests due to absences. Failure to show up will result in disciplinary action, such as detention.

What is Detention? Detention is NOT where you want to be. It is a silent workplace for students who haven’t made good choices. Skip a required Academic Session with a teacher and you’ll end up in Detention. If you choose to skip a required academic session with your teacher, you will serve the next Power Hour in detention. You will be required to report to detention at the start of Power Hour. The detention teacher will escort you to get lunch and you will spend the rest of the hour working on assignments from your classes. If you skip 3 academic sessions, in addition to detention, you will also receive an official discipline referral which may result in heavier consequences such as OSS. If you have 3 tardies to an

Page 22: West Craven High School Student/Parent Handbook 2018 - 2019...Craven County Board of Education further believes that the use of illegal drugs and other substances has a detrimental

WCHS Parent Student Handbook 2018-19 22

academic session, you will also receive detention.

How will my parents sign me out if I have an appointment or have to leave school early during Power Hour?

With around 1000 students choosing their own locations, our office staff won’t be able to track you down, so parents may NOT check students out during Power Hour. We recommend checking out ten minutes prior to the beginning of Power Hour or submitting your required checkout documentation to the office staff before the school day begins; otherwise, you’ll have to wait until 4th period.

What if I don’t need help in any of my classes? That’s fantastic. Your academic sessions might just be for working on homework or projects. Or you might find yourself assisting peers with their work in a teacher’s classroom. You may also utilize the common spaces to hang out with your friends. You may not hang out in the cafeteria for all 60 minutes. You must exit the cafeteria depending on what lunch you attended.

When is Power Hour? 12:03-12:31 Block A 12:35-1:03 Block B

How can I find out when clubs and other activities, are available?

Ask club advisors and listen for announcements.
