West Lampeter Fair
West Lampeter Fair
www.facebook.com/advertiser.lancaster
This “Senior Citizen” of Lancaster County Fairs was origi-nally organized as an activity to display projects prepared bystudents attending what was called the West LampeterVocational School. During the first twenty-five years, it washeld on the playground of the West Lampeter High School. In1949, it was moved to the Lampeter Community grounds, where it has grown into the major attraction that it is today.
The Fair Directors and Fair Department CommitteePersonnel comprise a unique blend of farmers, business per-sons and spirited citizens who value community serviceabove personal gain. Many of them take time from their reg-ular occupations to spend long days working for or at theFair.
The three-day event provides friendly competitionamong neighbors and a wholesome, educationalatmosphere for all ages. Farmers and small gar-deners can compare their produce at one centrallocation. Children can learn to appreciate quali-ty food products and farm animals. Our youth
program is especially designed to encourage both boys andgirls to exhibit in all categories of baking, canning, cooking,
art, sewing, fruits, vegetables, plants and animals.
Come to the Fair! Meet your neighbors;visit with our exhibitors; taste our food, andenjoy our wholesome entertainment.

Members of local 4-H clubs con-tribute greatly to the events at the WestLampeter Fair. Beef and dairy cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats are all shown atthe fair, with 4-H members among theexhibitors.
Emily Welk is a mother of 4-H clubmembers, a leader of the swine club, and coordinator of the livestock divi-sion. A former 4-H member herself, Welkknows firsthand the fun that young peo-ple have participating in the organiza-tion, as well as the important life lessonsthat they learn.
“You have a lot of kids in 4-H thatshow animals who have parents whoshowed animals. (The parents) want(their children) to have that experience,”Welk said. “There’s the tradition. Theymake a lot of friends, they work hard,
they take care of the animals everyday for months or sometimes up toa year depending on what kind ofanimal they’re showing.”
All animal clubs in the area arepopular, particularly the swineclub, which is expected to drawover 100 pigs to the West LampeterFair. Sheep also will number over100, and cattle are popular as well. The newest club in the area toshow is the goat club, which is injust its fourth year at the fair.Starting with just 11 animalsentered the first year, the numbershad tripled by last year.
The 4-H livestock club membersdevote their time to raising the ani-mals they will display and send toauction at the fair. They spend timegrooming their animals and
preparing them for the showring. That can include exercisingand training so that they can bepresented safely in the showrings.
Record keeping is also a bigpart of each 4-H livestock project.Usually it is one of the least funaspects of a livestock club project, butit teaches an important skill. The clubmembers keep records of their ani-mals’ progress as they grow andinclude a list of their expenses for feedand supplies. “I tell them, in life you’regoing to have to keep records,” Welksaid.
To help support their efforts andthe fair, the club members oftencontact sponsors and try to gener-ate interest in the livestock auc-tion. “You have to market youranimal. You have to feed it, (and)you have to show it,” Welkexplained. “(The children) have tokeep records to know what (they)need to make money at the end. They all do marketing. They write let-
ters to (potential) buyers (to describe)their animals and what they are goingto do with the money.”
The fair is the culmination of a year’swork for the youngsters. After spendingso much of their time with their animals, both grooming and exhibiting them, they look forward to enjoying the fair.
“Even when you’re struggling andyou don’t know if you want
to do it or not do it, thefair changes that,” Welksaid. “You come to the
fair and all yourfriends are there, andpeople come
through and ask youabout your animal. All
the kids love fair time.”

“Where did Sleeping Beauty prick her finger?” is a question fre-quently heard by the members of the Lancaster Spinners andWeavers Guild (LSWG). Today’s compact and efficient spinningwheels bear little resemblance to the large walking wheels usedduring the time of the fairy tale’s writing. They are also much lesslethal.
Spinning is the art of twisting fibers together to form yarn orthread, which can then be knit, crocheted, or woven into fabric.Visitors to the West Lampeter Fair on Friday, Sept. 28, are invitedto watch LSWG members ply their craft.
“(West Lampeter Fair) is fun,” said LSWG co-chair Beth Sterlingof Holtwood. “We’ll have a weaver and several spinners, and we’llput a fleece out to show what raw wool looks like.”
Sterling added that she would like to have a woven scarf onthe loom that could be finished during the demonstration. Thescarf would then be auctioned off to benefit the fair.
The guild has given fiber demonstrations at the WestLampeter Fair for more than 20 years, although the group hasbeen around for much longer. Co-chair Faye Hegener of LibertySquare in Drumore Township estimated that the guild was found-ed in the 1970s, if not earlier. Contrary to its name, the guild is notlimited to spinning and weaving.
According to the group’s website, www.lancspinweaveguild.org, “The purpose of the guild is to meet and exchangeideas, to help and encourage all fiber enthusiasts in an altruisticmanner to achieve the highest standards of excellence; to conductworkshops for instruction of members; to stimulate public interestin, and appreciation for the fiber arts.” Individuals with interests inspinning and weaving, as well as knitting, crocheting, felting, rughooking, shepherding, cultivating plant fibers, traditional living, and other fiber arts are welcome. At a guild retreat in August, attendees worked on punch-needle rug hooking, knitting, cro-chet, sock machine knitting, weaving, and spinning projects.
“This is the place to launch your interest,” Sterling wrote onthe guild’s website. “You can learn the lingo, the technique, and allthe infinite possibilities of the fiber arts, which will lead to arewarding lifelong activity. And if you already are established inthe fiber arts, what a great way to stay on top of the art and makenew friends.”
Fiber arts are also a great way to connect with history whileinnovating for the future.
“I love history. I used to sit at my grandmother’s knee listeningto stories of life in the Southern End,” Hegener recalled. “At LandisValley (Farm Museum), I saw someone spinning … and got into

Area 4-H clubs of all kinds, including the Rough Riders Horse Club, areinvolved in the West Lampeter Fair. Members and their horses can be foundcompeting against other youngsters and adults in the popular fair horseshow.
“It’s not an official club event, but a lot of the children do take off thatday and go to the show,” said group leader Debbie Anspach.
One of the Rough Rider members who has competed at the show isDarla Gehman. “I think it’s a pretty good experience,” she said. “It’s really fun. There are lots of friends, a lot of people, and lots of horses.”
Fellow Rough Rider Morgan Whaley agreed. “It’s a fun show to dosome classes and have some fun,” she said.
Not all of the club members have horses of their own or mounts suit-ed to enter the show, but they still attend to help fellow members withtheir horses and to cheer them on. “I don’t show, but I do go to watch,” clubmember Bailey Poorman said.
Rough Riders currently has 29 members, ages 8 to 18, drawn fromSolanco, Penn Manor, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Pequea Valley school dis-tricts. “We do have some horseless kids, so they may participate in helpingus with pony rides or we try to find horses for them to use,” Anspach said.“Some are not able to support a horse, so they participate in ‘non-horsey’events.”
Like other 4-H clubs, the Rough Riders organize events to fit the interestsof the members. “We work with whatever they would like to do,” Anspachsaid. “4-H is about learning and being exposed to different types of riding. Some of them like English, some of them like Western, some of them doWestern Pleasure, some of them do Western racing. We have kids that like tojump and kids that just want to ride.”
Activities for the club cover a wide range of interests. “We’re a verybusy club,” Anspach commented. “We start with some clinics, (where) welike to teach the children how to show their horse at halter, which is typical4-H. We (also) hold one or two riding clinics to help the children with what-ever level they are at. We have some kids that know very little about hors-es, and we have some kids that are quite skilled.”
In addition, the club participates in horse shows, trail rides, and a pop-ular overnight campout with the horses. The entire club experience is onethat children appreciate for a lifetime. “It’s a lot of fun for the kids,” Anspachremarked. “It’s a way for the kids to express their love of horses and to makefriends and grow as individuals with kids that sharethat same love.”
Participating in 4-H is often an interest that ishanded down through generations. ChristineJackson never had the chance to be a 4-H member, but wanted her daughters to have that experience.“They learn responsibility, morals, ethics and get aneducation on caring for their animals,” she said. “Ialways wanted a horse, and my daughter wasborn with the same passion, so I made sure ithappened for her. I had some friends thatwere in 4-H growing up and they seemedto get lifetime friendships out of it.”

By Marcella Peyre-FerryThe tradition of agricultur-
al fairs in Lancaster County hasalways involved young peo-ple. One organization that haslong been involved in the WestLampeter Fair is 4-H. This year, the service organization is cel-ebrating its 100th anniversary.
Now America’s largestyouth development organiza-tion, the ongoing goal of 4-H is tohelp young people and their fami-lies gain the skills they need to be productivemembers of their communities and to developeconomically.
One of the keys to 4-H is that young people learn by practical,hands-on learning experiences outside the classroom. In the late1800s, researchers at public universities saw that adults in farmingcommunities were not eager to adopt the new agricultural discov-eries the universities were developing. On the other hand, youngpeople were more open to new ideas. Rural youth programs weredeveloped to introduce new practices to the youngsters, with thehope that they would then share their ideas with the adults andpromote new agriculture technology in their communities.
Public school education was not always well-connected tocountry life, but hands-on learning could tie the two together. A. B.Graham, who formed a youth program in Clark County, Ohio, in1902, is credited with starting 4-H. The first club was called “TheTomato Club” or the “Corn Growing Club.” T.A. “Dad” Erickson ofDouglas County, Minn., also started local agricultural after-schoolclubs and fairs in 1902. Jessie Field Shambaugh developed theclover pin with an H on each leaf in 1910, and by 1912, the gather-ings began to be known as 4-H clubs.
The 4-H Club concept went nationwide in 1914 when Congresscreated the Cooperative Extension System in the U.S. Departmentof Agriculture. The focus was on boys’ and girls’ clubs involvedwith agriculture, home economics, and related subjects. From theearly years, the clubs also helped children develop leadership skills, just as 4-H does today.
Today, 4-H clubs are found in every state, reaching 6 millionyoungsters and serving far beyond the farming community. Clubsare created to meet the interests of children in rural, suburban, andurban areas. Although they take on different subjects, each clubstill cultivates the four Hs of the club motto: Head, Heart, Hand, andHealth.
“Head” stands for managing and thinking, “Heart” is for relat-ing and caring, “Hands” is for giving and working, and “Health” isfor being and living. Members explain those elements in the 4-HPledge – “I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greaterloyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.”
The most familiar 4-H clubs in rural areas are focused on live-stock, produce, and home economics, but there are also programsfor art, photography, and all kinds of hobbies and crafts. There arealso 4-H clubs covering sciences and technology, from rocketry torobotics. 4-H clubs are also very active in community service work, and projects have included raising puppies to become servicedogs and doing hands-on projects for neighbors.
Recent studies show clear benefits for youths who participatein 4-H. According to information on the 4-H website, www.4-H.org,club members are nearly two times more likely to get better gradesin school, nearly two times more likely to plan to go to college, 41

Sterling’s father grew up ona farm, and he passed a passionfor agrarian life on to his daugh-ter. A former FFA member,Sterling still recalls her firstthree sheep, Minnie, Mandie, and Maggie, whom she showedat the Solanco and WestLampeter fairs before exhibitingand selling at the Manheim
Farm Show. She also recalledher initial frustration withneedlework, saying, “My momsewed and embroidered pillow-cases, so I embroidered a pillow-case. It took me two years, and(then) a chocolate milkshakespilled all over it.”
Now, Sterling enjoys knit-ting, crocheting, and spinning, and she also processes fleecesinto fiber ready for spinning. She and Hegener are lookingforward to sharing their passionfor fiber arts with WestLampeter Fair visitors.
“It’s for the love of the fiber,”Sterling remarked.

BECAUSE ACCIDENTS
HAPPEN. See Us At The Fair!
By Marcella Peyre-FerryThe special entertainment at this year’s
West Lampeter Fair has “gone to the dogs.”Performances by Mutts Gone Nuts, an actthat has appeared in front of audiencesacross the country, always brings smiles toand cheers from fairgoers.
The husband-and-wife team of Joan andScott Houghton has been performingtogether for 22 years, although they onlybegan their Mutts Gone Nuts act aboutseven years ago.
“We wanted to switch into another act,”Joan said. “We both loved dogs, so wethought this would be fun.”
Based in Damascus, Md., the Houghtonsuse six to eight dogs in their show. The
canines perform all kinds of tricks, fromamazing flying disc catching to dancing,“talking” and circus-style tricks.
One important feature of MuttsGone Nuts is the fact that the dogs have allcome from rescues or shelters. “We are reallyinto dog rescue,” Joan said. “There’s lots ofwonderful dogs out there waiting to beadopted.”
Most of the dogs in the act aremixed breeds, with the exception ofan American Eskimo dog and a JackRussell terrier. Each one has its own special-ty in the show, performing a trick it enjoys.“It depends on the dog; some learn veryquickly. We try to look at things they like todo,” she said, giving the example of how one
dog that likes to jump is nowtrained to jump rope.
Joan believes that any dog ofany age can be taught. “The mosteffective methods and kindestmethods are positive training,” shesaid, noting that people often askdog-training questions after seeingthe show.
The Hough-tons advise peopleto consider adopting anadult dog rather than apuppy, since olderdogs will usually
have had training. “With dogs in shelters, you don’t know the circumstances that putthem there,” Joan explained, adding that
some very well-behaved pets mayend up in need of a home.
The Houghtons are suchstrong adoption sup-
porters that when theysell photos after theshow, they donate the
proceeds to help sup-port a local rescue.
Mutts Gone Nuts isa performance fair-goers of all ages will
want to be sure tocatch. “It’s definite-
ly an act for allages,” Joan said.“It’s pretty muchaction-packed.”
