Bridging a Connection with Songs. . .

In December 2012, our son, Scott, who was a resident of Winning Wheels Long TermCare Facility in Prophetstown, Illinois since 2003, was put under the care of the Genesis Hospice team due to terminal cancer. Scott also had a bicycle accident inChicago, December of 2002, leaving him brain injured and paralyzed confining him toa wheel chair. He was diagnosed in 1999 with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Katie, musicaltherapist, as well as Genesis Hospice staff, Alexia, Annie, Rob, Bruce (minister) andRenee (social worker) visited Scott regularly to keep him comfortable. Also, Reneewould call to see if we needed anything or if Scott needed something.

On the day Scott died, March 7, 2013, Katie had come to Winning Wheels about 9 a.m.to sing to Scott. Our daughter, Dina, had spent the night so when my husband and I arrived, Katie, Dina and Scott’s roommate, Tim, were singing some of Scott’s favoritesongs. In his comatose state, he was moving his fingers as if trying to “play” his “air” guitar which he often did when there was music playing. As we look back on thatmorning, it was a miracle Katie came to play for Scott.

Scott passed away at 3 p.m. that day with his parents and sister at his side. Alexia also came to his room when she was told by the Winning Wheels staff that Scott hadstopped breathing. We are forever grateful for the care Scott received from the Genesis Hospice team during the last months of his life.

Linda and Phil Bivens, Scott’s parents

We thank. . .all of the doctors and audience who have come together this afternoon to celebrate music in an effort to bring

awareness and funding for this important, charity-funded program.

A special thanks to our sponsors, our board of directors, staff members, the Physician Satisfaction Firestarter Team and the volunteers

who have made this afternoon possible.

Welcome - Steve Bahls, President, Augustana College

Dr. Randy Lewis, piano“Cordoba” from Chants d’Espagne by Isaac Albeniz (1860-1906)

“Cordoba” is part of a suite, Chants d’Espagne (Songs of Spain), written originally for piano. It has become very popular as a transcription for guitar, and it is believed by some experts to be partly inspired by the Great Mosque of Cordoba, in Cordoba, Andalusia. One author said, “The beauty and romance, which is the particular charm of the city of Cordoba, inspired this composition.”

Dr. Dawn Bode, bassoon, accompanied by Teresa Scherrer, pianoSonata No. 4, Allemanda an Minuetto, by Luigi Merci and edited by George Langazo

Dr. Archana Wagle, double violin Concerto duet with Jim Fudge and Marian Lee, piano Concerto in D minor for two violins and piano by Johann Sebastian Bach, Vivace

Rishi Wagle, piano Danza de la moza donosa by Alberto E. Ginastera

Keshav Wagle, piano Toccata by Martin Cuellar

Danelle Kvapil, saxophone, accompanied by Jody Johnston-Mohr, pianoAir For Alto by Arthur FrackenpohlAlthough the Air For Alto is a modern composition, it is a traditional 3-part form. The theme is introduced by the piano and then explored as a dialogue between the piano and saxophone before restating and dying away. The solo line contrasts subtle playing against expressive bursts of color and tone. The dialogue suggests a jazz style dance in which two performers begin together, briefly go their separate ways and then reunite.

About today’s featured concert piano. . .

During the past few years, West Music Company and Steinway & Sons have been honored to provide and feature extraordinary concert grand pianos for this very special event in the Quad Cities. This year is certainly no exception. For this year’sGenesis Doctors in Recital program, we are extremely excited to feature one of themost revered musical instruments in the world - the Vladimir Horowitz Steinway &Sons Concert Grand Piano, CD 503.

Vladimir Horowitz (1903 - 1989), a member of Steinway’s Immortal Artists roster, is widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. His colorful personality and astounding performances enthralled audiences for decades. Early in1934, as a wedding present, Steinway & Sons presented Horowitz and his wife Wandawith a Steinway Model D Concert Grand, Serial #279503. In the early 1940’s, this pianowas replaced with Serial #314503, now known simply as CD 503. CD 503, today’s featured piano, is the instrument Horowitz kept in his New York townhouse. He used it in many recitals and recordings throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, and he famouslydemanded that the piano be his exclusive touring instrument during the last four years of his life, including for his triumphant return to the former Soviet Union for performances in Moscow and Leningrad in 1986. Horowitz also played this instrument at the White House for President Ronald Reagan.

Now on tour with Steinway & Sons, this remarkable piano has continued to travel allover the world to various Steinway dealers, institutions, and performing arts facilitiesthroughout the past two decades. Pianists of all ages and all ability levels across theglobe have now touched these legendary keys, including many of the more than 1,600 current Steinway Artists - professional pianists who choose to perform exclusively on Steinway pianos.

It is an incredible honor to bring this treasured instrument to the Quad Cities for this amazing recital event. All of us at West Music and Steinway & Sons thank and congratulate all the performers, and we thank you, the audience, for your attendanceand incredible support and generosity for music therapy and Genesis Hospice Care.

Enjoy today’s program and the Vladimir Horowitz Steinway!
