Volume 20, Issue 2 SUMMER 2019

The Fall of 2019 promises to be a great time to be a Norristown Area High School Eagle. Our students will return to us ready to build upon the traditions of pride and excellence that you, our alumni, have left for them.

Whether it be in a class-room, on the stage, or in an athletic competition, the current group of Eagles pro-vide countless reasons for all of us to be proud. I hope that you will come and visit us throughout the year to see them in action and let them see that school pride exists far beyond graduation day.

There are many changes underway both at the school and in the district. Dr. Yolanda Williams joined us last year as Assistant Super-intendent and she has been a great addition to Superinten-dent Dormer’s team. Under their leadership, the district

is focused on marketing our successes, taking on our challenges and truly provid-ing our students with a first-class education. Academically we are add-ing Computer Science, Ad-vanced Placement Physics, and a new Physical Educa-tion elective. The District has also in-vested a great deal into im-proving our school build-ings. On A Roll

No Moss Gathering at NASD Ultimately, the focus of NASD education is to pre-pare all students for the post-secondary outcomes that they choose.

What does this mean in practice?

For the first time, all three middle schools will be teaching Algebra I to select seventh graders. Teachers have been preparing for this over the past two years by combining the sixth, seventh and eighth grade math courses into a two year course for some fifth and sixth grade students,

In a recent conversation with Norristown Area School District Superinten-dent of Schools Christopher Dormer, it is evident that the school district plans to keep up its momentum of im-provement and growth. “Inspiring our students to learn and to lead” is the Dis-trict’s goal. To that end, three points will be empha-sized in the District to reach this goal.

Tell our story.

Community of learning.

Literacy for life, both reading and digital.

In September, every NAHS student will be is-sued a Chromebook as part of a program which was successfully piloted last year at Roosevelt School. Sprint will be providing 800 wire-less hot spots for the next three years so that the stu-dents will have internet on their Chromebooks at home.

The middle school teach-ers will use this year to plan for the use of Chromebooks in their schools in the fall of 2020, which is the next phase of the program.

At their May meeting, the West Norriton Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of the former Burnside School property from the Norristown Area School District.. In addition, the Norris-town Area School District’s Board of Directors requested that the 2010 stadium agree-ment with West Norriton Township (WNT) be amended, which would in-clude changes in how the stadium can be used, stadi-um funding, commercial leasing of the stadium, the use of the PA system, and allowing the stadium to be used for marching band competitions. It also re-quested the disbanding the stadium Ad Hoc Committee.

change other things stay the same. Our JROTC program con-tinues to be a great source of student growth and pride. This year they will have well over 150 members and will compete in the national championships for the first time ever! Our track team continues to excel at the district and state level, and we hosted the league championships last spring. Boys basketball won their second straight division champion-ship and returned to the state playoffs. Most importantly, our athletic department’s Play Like a Town Girl movement has helped to jump start our efforts to make our women’s teams among the best in the area. Our drumline is growing and increasingly visible through-out the region, and our choral music program hosted a dis-trictwide choral festival that was so awesome it gave me chills. The legacy of the Class of 2019 is that they brought back the power of student voice. They did this by leading an effort to improve the culture of our school through active involve-ment in a revived Student Council, a new Black Student Un-ion, and the continuation of leadership groups including the Blue and White Society, Unidad, the Young Scholars, the Gay-Straight Alliance and the National Honor Society. The Class of 2020 has always been a very active class, and they are a very fun, personable cohort as well. I have no doubt that they will continue to use their voice and their love of Norristown to guide us towards continued success.

NASD continued from page 1

Dormer was excited that the number and quality of applica-tions the district is receiving for staff vacancies are very high. This was helpful in the hiring of new principals at Stewart and East Norriton Middle Schools. Other vacancies that have been filled are a new food service director, middle school Special Education supervisors, and two middle school assis-tant principals. Last year the School Board approved a bond for capital projects in the District which has been used for the roofs of six schools, updating the HVAC systems in seven schools, paving the parking lot at NAHS and the middle schools, and improving the sound system in the NAHS Auditorium which was evident at this year’s graduation ceremonies. If everything goes as planned, lights will be installed at the NAHS multipurpose field and the first night home football game will be held there on September 13. A big change is in the works at Hancock School as a house in front of the school by the driveway has been purchased and will be demolished so that the driveway and bus loop can be improved. A safety grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was used to establish secure vestibules in every school. All visitors will use a LobbyGuard touch screen to enter infor-mation before being admitted to the school. As part of the new security, the main office at Eisenhower Middle School will be moved closer to its front door. Additionally, five new mental health counselors will be funded by the grant. Dormer is looking forward to the school year and invites NASD alumni “to be part of the journey.”

Last fall one of the things that Mr. Christopher Dormer, Superintendent of Schools, wanted to do is to standardize the symbols that represent the Norristown Area School District, i.e. the letter “N,” the Norristown Eagle, and the color that is Norristown blue. To this end, a committee was formed and the results of there efforts have been finalized. The block “N” shown on the left

is now be the official NASD “N.” Its selection was based in the historical use of the block “N” in the school district. The color of blue that fills the “N” has been standardized also. The Norristown Blue is officially described bythe RBG code R=0, G=45, B=255, or Hex code #002DFF The selection of the Norristown Eagle was more of a chal-lenge. Many eagles have been used over the years as the Norristown Eagle, so the com-mittee had many choices to consider. In the end, they selected the eagle shown on the right. In color the shaded parts are in two shades of blue. The new symbols of the dis-trict will be used by all groups associated with NASD to cre-ate a consistent brand.

New Bleachers Installed; Lights are Coming!!!

Watching NAHS Athletic teams play at home will no long-er require bringing your own chair! Early in April, installa-tion of another set of permanent bleachers was completed. As NASD Chief Financial Officer Anne Rohricht stated in an email announcing the arrival of the new bleachers, “these bleacher are finally a reality because of your generous spirit and love for the Norristown community.” And the good news doesn’t stop there. The installation of lights on the field means that the first night home football game on the field will be held on Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m. when the Eagles take on Cheltenham High School. Other night home football games will be on September 27 vs. Perkiomen Valley High School, on October 4 vs. Owen J. Roberts High School, on October 18 vs. Boyertown Area Sr. High School (Homecoming), and a yet to be scheduled oppo-nent on October 25. In addition, both the Girls and the Boys Varsity Soccer teams’ Senior Nights with a game under the lights. The Girls will play Perkiomon Valley on October 1 and the Boys will face Methacton on October 7. Both games start at 7 p.m.
