Chairman’s Report Welcome everybody - Leaders, Parents and Cubs, Scouts and Venturers.

2015 was an exciting year as the build-up for the Jamboree. Fund raising and preparing for the Jamboree was the main focus for the past year. It was great we were able to have monies in the account to afford the new tents as well as other smaller items to make their stay as comfortable as possible. The Christmas tree selling is still our biggest fund raising event, and this allows us to have the money when the leaders ask for it. I would like to thank the committee Tanya, Peter, Claire and Kevin. They have been a great company and our meetings are always enjoyable.

This is the last year that three of us will be on the committee as we will not be standing next year. We need some of you to join the committee so you know what is required when we are not here this time next year. I invite people to join the committee. The committee needs new people to ensure the running of the troop. Please don’t be surprised if we tap you on the shoulder and ask you to join. doing a great job with most taking the responsibility very well. Most of the cubs have been progressing through the Boomerang with many Bronze, some Silver and a few Gold Boomerangs. A lot of the cubs have attained many Achievement badges and some have even achieved their special interest badge. We have had the privilege to have 4 cubs who have achieved their Grey Wolf Awards, these being Mackenzie Jenkins, Jack McDonald and Harry Dalton and Lachlan Rooney. Congratulations to these Cubs. In addition to the weekly Monday night programs, the cubs have participated in the following District, Regional and State activities (from June 2015to May 2016):

Cub Scout Challenge Benowie District Camp Sirius Cup boating & sailing activities at Balmoral Beach ANZAC day parade to the Hornsby Cenotaph ANZAC day Dawn service

West Pennant Hills Pack activities: District Leadership Course Gardening at Pennant Hills High School Fire Station Visit Historical Society visit

Other regular items include: Pack Councils to provide leadership training and planning input for the Cub Sixers and Seconds. Participation in Clean up Australia Day and Red Shield appeal

Cub Leaders There are four cub leaders, another leader would be great, as we have some leaders travelling for work and cannot make every Monday night. A big note of thanks goes to all our Cub Leaders, as without their dedication and time we would not have such a healthy numbered pack.

It is sad to say goodbye to one of our long time leaders, Jeremy Waite (Kaa). We wish you the best for the future. All the cubs, parents and leaders would like to thank the Group Leader Kevin and committee for providing the management, organisation, funding, treasurer, secretarial and fund raising support for without which the Cub Pack could not operate. Thanks to the tremendous contributions by parents. They have all, at various stages, given up their time and provided assistance, transport, fund raising and support both for weekly meetings and weekend activities. Without this wonderful level of support we would not be able to program the wide range of activities we provide for the Cubs. We look forward to another action packed & fun filled Cub program, over the next 12 months including a Cuboree. Mark Randle

2016 Scouts Report Where to begin? With such a busy year had by all since the last Annual Report with lots of changes in youth members, leaders and attendance at many activities. The highlight of the year would no doubt be the attendance of scouts and leaders at the very wet and hot Jamboree in January, 2016 held at Cataract Park. Youth who attended come back wiser, happier and just changed, with many asking when is the next one I want to go. It was great to see that Hamish Campbell was invited to participate in the presentation that Gang Show did at Jamboree. Every role is a huge effort for a youth member to perform in front of 9,000 scouts and leaders, whether it is a small or big role. Two scouts from West Pennant Hills attended World Jamboree in Japan, and both are well on the way to obtaining their International Explorer Award. This award like many awards has several components and it is pleasing to see that both Matthew and Keiran have fulfilled their criteria in order to obtain this. Well done! There have been Scouts move onto Venturers, Cubs move up to Scouts and new leaders start. It is wonderful to see the succession and growth of the Scout Section. The consolidation of the Patrol System is pleasing to see and Scouts have taken on board ownership of their troop night. Target awards and higher achievements have been the order of the youth in the past year.

All who attended Jamboree obtained their Pioneer Badge which is a huge achievement. Two green cord hikes were completed last year, Memphis Costello and Matthew Anderson. Scouts decided that they would be competitive for Easter Camp (where they achieved 12th and 15th place). This is the first time in many years that WPH have been competitive and a tribute to the outgoing leaders and incoming leaders for their guidance with this. State Rally was held recently and again “competitive patrols” was the order of the day. Silver was obtained by one patrol, finishing 24th overall out of 300 participating patrols and bronze was obtained by the other patrol. An effort well don on all accounts. It is also pleasing to see that Matthew Anderson also obtained his Australian Scout Medallion, the first for many years for the group. Congratulations on this achievement. It is pleasing to inform you that Samantha Boniface was nominated and attended State Youth Council. Samantha not only attended but was elected Secretary of the State Youth Council. She has been elected to attend the Australian Youth Program conference in Melbourne with three other scouts from the State. It is hoped the above achievements encourage other Scouts in the Troop aspire to obtaining and doing their best and hopefully live up to the Scout Promise and Law with the help and guidance of the leaders Paul Anderson (Hulk), Emma Campbell (Ivy Who), Alison Costello (Mario) and Wendy Farrell (Dingo), who are also learning each day. Thank you to the committee for all their fundraising efforts so that the youth can continue with scouting by having the equipment and resources available to them. Thank you to all the parents for their support and ensuring the youth members arrive on troop night and activities. It would be remiss of us to thank Mary Page (Sueme) for all her dedicated time and efforts in keeping the Scout Section going. Mary sadly left us after Jamboree and is now completing her training for District Scout Leader and we wish her well in her new role in the Scouting Movement. Mary has been a fountain of information for the new leaders and always makes time to help and guide us.

2016 Venturers Report This year the WPH venturers made a new unit in February with Cherrybrook, Beecroft and 2/3 Pennant Hills being held weekly on a Wednesday night at the WPH hall. The new vennies unit has had a massive influx of new members that have come up from the WPH scout group. The vennies group comprises of (15) 5 WPH, 4 Cherrybrook, 1 Beecroft and 3 2/3 Pennant Hills members and with 3 leaders each from their own group. So far our new vennies group has partaken in many exciting activities such as but not limited to;

Formal Maccas Venturing skills hike Putt Putt golf A soap swap ( trading) Iron gut challenge Cooking night

Our main activity this year was the annual Dragonskin competition which was held at Belanglo state forest over the Easter holidays. Over 1000 venturers attended from NSW and a few other teams from different states competed. Our team came 104th out of about 200 teams which is a great result for a new vennies group. The venturers would like to thank the leaders Mark, David and Sharyn who have been a great help to the success of the new unit. We would also like to thank the wph scout group and committee for supporting the development of the new venture unit. We are hoping that the venturer group is successful and prospers over the coming years. Matt Anderson

2016 Group Leader’s Report We are extremely fortunate at West Pennant Hills to have an efficient and effective Group committee in place who support the youth sections and enable them to deliver programmes using the Scout method.

Group Events All sections came together to attend a very enjoyable family camp at Glenrock Scout camp in September with lots of fishing, canoeing and bushwalking. The group celebrated end of the year with a combined BBQ, Queens Scout Badge presentation and an archery tag competition at West Pennant Hills public School. We have decided that we will try the family camp as a biennial event so the next family camp will be held in 2017 I would like to thanks the Leaders, Committee and parents for their support over the past year and we look forward to a successful 2016 and beyond. Yours in Scouting, Kevin Pidd

2016 Hall Co-ordinator and Fundraising Report 2015 was a busy year for our hall. The hall was regularly hired by 3 new groups for Personal training when it rains, indoor RC cars and a ladies quilting and sewing group as well as our long term hirers. With our regular and casual hirers we raised $12440 in hall hire which directly goes back into maintaining and running the hall. We are a confirmed polling place for the upcoming Federal election

Through grants and fundraising have been able to get the small room’s floor sanded, repainted and re varnished, install a new built in cupboard and we have had an electrical upgrade with some of the lights in the big room being replaced with brighter fittings, extra lights for the small room, a fan in each room, all existing power points are now doubles and added more power points to both rooms.

We ran 2 Bunnings BBQ’s at Dural and Castle Hill and an election BBQ raising $3350 for Jamboree 2016.

IBM - $2200, only available to IBM employees who volunteer their time

WPH Sports club - $2000, as part of the club grants program.

Neighbourhood Watch Pennant Hills - $200 towards the purchase of a Personal Locator Beacon for Scout bushwalking

The committee applied for and received $4400 in grants.

Fundraising in 2016 will go directly towards Cuboree and hall maintenance.

AWARDS 2016 Cubs of the Year For Cub of the Year we generally try to focus on the older Cubs who are possibly in their last year of the Cub Section, as the younger Cubs still have a while to go and have more opportunities to make an impression on the leaders. This years Cub of the Year goes to an extremely quiet cub that has been with us only 2 ½ years but has quietly achieved at lot. He regularly attends cub meetings and activities, and always gives it a go. He has recently been promoted to Sixer and has taken the responsibility of a Sixer with open arms. He is always cheerful, polite and well mannered but most of all he always does his best when he is at cubs and also outside of cubs. We believe that this year's Cub of the Year has tried to do his best in the Cub Section and we hope that he will continue to do so when he moves up to the Scout Section. The Cub Leaders are proud to announce that this year the award goes to Lachlan Rooney.

2016 Scout of the Year I am pleased to announce that this year’s Scout of the Year is Matthew Anderson. Matthew started in the group as a Cub Scout and achieved his Grey Wolf then went onto Scouts. Matthew has also obtained his ASM, both of which are the highest awards in each section. There have been no other youth members in the group who has achieved both distinctions in the two sections in the history of West Pennant Hills Scout Group. This is a fantastic achievement for him and would not have been possible without the help and encouragement of his family and respective leaders in the sections and his willingness to participate. Matthew has been instrumental in the troop patrol system and has always been a willing member to get out of his comfort zone and get things done. He attended World Jamboree in Japan in 2015 and came back with his eyes open about the way world scouting groups function. For the past two years Matthew has been assisting consistently on a

Monday night with the Cub Pack and has also attended two Pack Holidays. A great learning curve and leadership implementation was gained by Matthew when he fully embraced the running of the Christmas tree sales for the group to raise a substantial amount of money for the group. Matthew has been an ideas youth member and considerate member of the troop and on all accounts a youth member who has lived up to the Scout Promise and law. Matthew it was a pleasure watching you grow as a youth member and growing as a person. We look forward to hearing of your many successes in the Venturer section in the coming years. Congratulations Citation: For being an instrumental part of the troop and Patrol System and a willing youth member of getting out of your comfort zone, mentoring and encouraging younger youth members to enjoy Scouting Life now and in the future.

West Pennant Hills Scouts Attend AJ2016

Every three years scouts get the opportunity to attend Scouts Australia’s major event, the national Jamboree. AJ2016 was held at Cataract Scout Park and 12 scouts from WPH joined together with 2/3rd Pennant Hills and Roseville Scout Groups to form Troop D620 and spend enjoy ten days of adventure, activities from sailing, rock climbing, trade skills, circus juggling to water slides and rock concerts. This is a character building experience that will live with them for the rest of their lives. A story from one of the scouts…….. One of the highlights was being involved in the filming of a Sunrise episode – the weatherman was on site and we participated in various activities during the weather cross each half hour from about 5am until 8am. These photos were of a chariot race, one of the last items. It had begun to rain by then, and we were all soaking wet and cold - we weren’t allowed to wear our jumpers on camera so they could see the NSW Contingent shirts.

The troop campsite The troop is looking forward to attending the next Australian Jamboree AJ2019 in South Australia!

Try Scouting The Group is recruiting and we have made up these cards to distribute to schools to encourage prospective cubs and scouts to come along and try out. If you would like to pass these on to family, friends or local youth, then ask any leader for some cards.

Parents Handbook Now Available This year the group has produced a “Parents Handbook”. Hard copies have been handed out to cubs and scouts and it can be downloaded from h t t p s : / / w w w. d r o p b o x . c o m / s / p 5 8 1 w w l x h f 4 e h 4 u /WPH_Parents_Hand_Book.pdf?dl=0 Or ask for a printed copy from any of the leaders. If there is some information you think should be included, please let us know and we will do an update and improve this resource.

Farewell To Kaa We will sorely miss one of our most loved Cub Leaders, Kaa, who has moved on after many years with West Pennant Hills Group. Jeremy joined West Pennant Hills Scouts as Group Treasurer in 2008 and served the Group well in that role. He commenced Cub Scout Leader training late in 2009. By the end of 2010 Jeremy completed his Cub Scout Leader training and resigned as Group Treasurer to devote his full attention to the Cub Pack. Jeremy has served as Assistant Cub Scout Leader since then. He attended the 4th New South Wales Cuboree in 2011 as Pack Activities Leader and the 5th New South Wales Cuboree in 2014 as Pack Welfare Leader. Jeremy was always available to step in and help out, often at short notice, and used his problem solving skills to resolve any difficulties that may arise. He has used his experience to mentor new Cub Leaders and his

enthusiasm and professionalism has been a major contribution to the success and smooth running of the West Pennant Hills Cub Pack over the last few years.

Queens Scout Award The pinnacle of Scouting Awards is the Queen’s Scout awarded in the Venturer Scout section. It has been five years since this award has been achieved by a West Pennant Hills Venturer so congratulations to Chris for achieving this distinction. The award is completed over three years and covers the four areas of Outdoor Activities, Community Involvement, Leadership Development and Personal Growth. Chris addressed these by achieving qualifications in abseiling, scuba diving, first aid, working in a retirement home and being the chairman of the Unit Council amongst other activities. Chris collaborated with other Venturers while working towards this goal, especially with Wun from Beecroft and Jess from Cherrybrook and all had their awards presented by the Governor of New South Wales at Government House in Sydney in May.

**URGENT** WPH SCOUT GROUP TREASURER NEEDED

Our long standing treasure, Peter, is moving away from Sydney next year, so this is his last term as WPH Scout Group Treasurer. It will be our loss as Peter has been and astute and vigilant treasurer keeping a keen eye on our finances. Now the Group needs a parent to step up as as the next treasurer. Peter will be around until the next Annual Report to guide a replacement in the tasks required. This is not a huge task, one meeting a month and some time to spend tracking income and expenditure. Can you help us while your child enjoys the cub and scout programme?
