President’s Message

As the bare branches of trees begin to stretch out green leaves to embrace longer, warmer I am reminded that as Canada’s top scientist my colleagues and I were the first to identify the very first step in photosynthesis which converts the sun’s energy into everything necessary for life on earth! Thus as we transition to spring and summer our activities also transition to the outside at the beaches, bicycling or walking around our neighborhoods.

Our West Point Grey Community Centre also transitions with the seasons to offer many popular recurring programs. For example, this winter, our Breakfast with Bunny was once again sold out, as was our Afternoon Tea for Kids – Harry Potter Theme. We had a highly successful Family Day with West Point Grey celebration on February 18, and community members of all ages turned out for the Family Planting Event at Jericho Park held on March 10.

We welcomed our new Board of Directors this past February at our Annual General Meeting, which took place on Wednesday, February 6. There are currently 17 Board members, including three new additions: Keta Kosman, Murray Hendren and Rory Sanderson, along with two returning members: Susan Fraser-Hughes and our past president, Shamim Shivji.

Our Spring/Summer Recreation Guide will again feature many of the familiar events you’ve come to expect and love. Saturday, May 4 marks the 45th annual Spring Pottery Sale. The first sale took place on November 19, 1974 – only three days after Aberthau officially became a community centre. We will again celebrate our community at the annual Point Grey Fiesta parade and fairgrounds from June 21-23 – check www.pointgreyfiesta.org for a listing of the many artists and vendors who will be at the Saturday event on June 22. Another annual and much beloved event is our Sandcastle Competition, which takes place on Friday, July 19.

Summer, of course, means summer break; and, West Point Grey CC has a whole host of summer camp offerings for ages 2.5 to 13. Be sure to take a look at our Summer Day Camps section in this guide to learn about our many different camps, from Skimboarding to Camp Soleil French language, Mad Science and Kids on Wheels – Balance Bike camps. Our Family Fun Nights at Trimble Park special events are also back with activities for families and friends.

As often happens, we have some new additions to our programming lineup, too. This Spring/Summer we are launching a Strong Healthy Kids – Body, Mind and Spirit workshop for parents and children. Our new Vision Board Workshop teaches participants how discover what they really want. You may also be interested in our Minding Your Memoir workshop to successfully structure and sculpt your personal story.

Our Music off the Page Artist Residency is in full swing and has several music-related events coming up that may pique your interest. Please visit their blog events page to learn more at www.musicoffthepageblog.weebly.com.

Enjoy all this season has to offer, as fall is only five months away!

Sincerely, David DolphinPresident WPGCCA

Music off the Page ResidencyAs practicing musicians, Roisin Adams and Emily Best hope to inspire collaborations between musicians (from beginner to professional), stimulate the community with contemporary music and discourse and offer accessible programming that explore sound and music for participants of all ages. Collaborative Creative Dance Workshops for Older AdultsBeginning in 2015, community centres across the city had the opportunity to offer unique arts programs that use the collaborative creative strategies developed in the Arts and Health Project, encouraging and supporting participants to express their life experience and knowledge creatively in groups working with professional artists who have training in this work. Based on the foundation of collaboration, the project builds community and strengthens cultural and social understandings. Our WPG resident professional dance artist and choreographer Desirée Dunbar, will be leading these Creative Dance Workshops for Older Adults at Aberthau. About the Artist Studio Residencies

in Parks and Park FacilitiesVancouver Park Board’s Fieldhouse Studio program transformed former care-takers’ suites in parks or underused facilities across Vancouver into active spaces for community engaged creative practices. In each cycle artist collectives, food, greening and environmental groups are given free access to these spaces in exchange for engaging neighbours, colleagues and curious visitors in imaginative, collaborative work in parks. These inspiring projects lead communities into deeper conversations about living in the urban environment. Find out more about all 24 Fieldhouse Programs across the Vancouver Park Board at vancouver.ca/fieldhouse-programs.

Indigenous Plant Walks in Jericho Parkwith Nicole PreisslJoin Nicole for fun and engaging walks that will change how you view the plants we see daily in our urban environments: in both tended garden beds and unstewarded green spaces. The group conversation will include sharing ideas around the ethics of stewardship and foraging in an urban context, making rope while walking with dye and weaving plants identified along the walk. The intention of these walks is to provide people with the opportunity to see the land around them as vibrant and abundant, and themselves as participating agents in the ongoing story of place. Pre-registration required at www.aberthauplantwalk.eventbrite.com Tuesdays June 11 & 18 6:00pm-8:00pm

Artists, Food and Garden Experts in our Neighbourhood

Nicole Preissl is an explorative designer who uses natural materials to influence her work. From both Stó:lō and Squamish decent, she began introducing traditional artistic customs into her practice as a means of connecting to her culture. She does this by passing along sacred teachings from elders and community members alike, while introducing people to natural ways of making with indigenous materials. We encourage you to have a picnic dinner on the lawn at Aberthau before or after the walk!
