Dates for October West Town Lane Academy Where Learning is an Adventure WINTER MENU We asked children from across the school to help us choose food for the winter menu. Our school cook prepared a number of new dishes for the children to try, including spicy meatballs with garlic rice, salmon pasta, beef casserole and a strawberry mousse cake. The children then fed back on each individual dish. They were a fantastic help and took their job extremely seriously. This week we will be finalising the menu and will circulate it hopefully in a couple of weeks time, coming into effect at the beginning of Term 2. COFFEE MORNING Thank you to everyone who supported our coffee morning last week in aid of Macmillan. It was very well attended, and raised just over £130 for the charity. PARENT’S EVENINGS Please book your appointment online using the codes you have previously been provided with- please see your CLASS TEACHER if you have forgotten yours, and a reminder of how to use the system is on the back page of the newsletter. SPORTS HALL Further to the item in the June newsletter, local residents will have received letters over the past few weeks regarding our application for the proposed sports hall. This is very exciting for us, as if approved it will provide the children with a dedicated space that we can use throughout the year for PE and drama. Our current halls are under immense pressure, and now that we have 20 classes it means that when we have other events such as assemblies, rehearsals for plays, coffee mornings etc. then children are unable to do PE. The proposed hall would be to the front of the school near the bridge, which would use a piece of ground that we do not use and yet would not spoil the approach or wonderful greenery that we have. It is proposed to be finished in cedar to make it fit into the landscape and complement the Discovery Rooms building. We didn’t want the hall to the rear of the main school as it would then impact negatively on the play spaces available. We will let you know the outcome as soon as we know it, and then in time there would obviously be a fenced area whilst the hall is being installed.

NURSERY The preparations for the Nursery are going ahead, although we are waiting for the outcome of our planning application from Bristol City Council and so are limited to how much we can do until that time. Our initial application was refused as we had applied for a ‘lawful development certificate’ as the initial advice we had been given treated the house as an ancillary building of the current school, whereas when the planning committee met it was decided that a full planning application had to be made instead. Slightly frustrating from our point of view, but the relevant paperwork has been submitted and a decision will be made in due course. In the meantime, some work has begun on the school house to make it into a modern and usable space (this doesn’t require planning permission- just changing the actual use of the house). It is hoped that we will be able to ‘market’ the nursery class from January, when you will formally be able to apply for spaces.

DATA COLLECTION SHEETS This week you will receive a copy of the record that we have for you on our computer system. It is very important that you check this thoroughly as phone numbers etc. can change frequently and we often try ringing parents and are unable to get through. We also need additional information from you regarding country of birth and pupil nationality as the annual census from the DfE has changed. If we do not hear back from you by the end of October this will default to ‘UK’ and ‘British’, but we appreciate this doesn’t actually apply to many of you so please let us know!

DOGS ON SITE This is a polite reminder that dogs are NOT permitted on our site at all, unless coming in to class for a specific activity or a guide dog/ hearing dog for those with a disability. It has come to attention that some parents are carrying their dogs when dropping off /collecting children but we must ask you leave them (the dog, not the children) at home!

PARKING Residents of Hitherbath Bridge have been in touch with the transport management team at the City Council who will be monitoring the parking issues over the coming weeks and months. Parents/ carers are reminded to park legally and safely and not to block the resident’s driveways or road. Could you also behave in an appropriate manner if asked to move a car and not to give the residents abuse.

SCHOOL MEALS The price of a school meal remains at £2.25 for this academic year, payable in advance or on the day. We currently have several hundred pounds owing to us already this term for children having a meal and the parents not paying for it, despite reminders. Our administration team, who are always friendly and happy to help, are often abused by parents when they have to chase payments which is completely unacceptable. Please watch your manners when talking to school staff. If you think you are entitled to free school meals then a member of the team will be happy to talk through this with you.

UNIFORM, PE KITS & JEWELLERY The majority of children are in perfect uniform, but a reminder that children should wear a white/ red polo shirt and red jumper/ cardigan to school, with black shoes. Our PE kit is a white top and black/ navy shorts- if children do not bring their kits in they are provided with a spare to wear, but this shouldn’t become normal practice. Only stud earrings are permitted in school, and all other jewellery, including bracelets should be removed before coming to school each day.

ADMISSIONS POLICY We are wishing to change our Admissions Policy to prepare for the proposed nursery class. The criteria for entering the school at mandatory school age is not changing and would remain the same as Bristol City Council and continue to be administered by them. However, we are proposing that the statements underlined below are added to the existing policy: RATIONALE West Town Lane Academy is its’ own admissions authority for nursery and in-year admissions, however will follow the guidance and procedures as set out by Bristol City Council who will retain a coordinating role for all admissions into Reception. This policy sets out the criteria for admissions should the school be over subscribed. GUIDELINES

• Applications to the nursery class should be made directly to the Academy office using the relevant paperwork. Information is available on the website regarding the relevant dates for each academic year.

• WTL Academy is a non selective school for local children. If the Academy is over subscribed, priority will be given to students in the order set out below:

o Children who are in public care, or immediately after being in care became subject to an adoption, residence or special guardianship order.

o Children of Service/ Armed Forces personnel. o Children who have a sibling already attending the school and will continue to do so on

the date of admission. o NURSERY ONLY- Children who have a parent/ carer working at the school.* o Children who live closest to the school, using a straight line distance from the main

entrance of the Academy to the main entrance of the child’s home (‘home’ is defined as where the child spends the majority of their time and is living with the person who has parental responsibility).

o Where two or more children live in a flat or other multi-home dwelling and it is not possible to determine which applicant lives closest, the available place(s) will be allocated by drawing lots.

*Staff must have worked at the Academy for at least a 12 month period to be eligible. It must be stressed that admission to the nursery class would not entitle the child to a place within the school once they reach statutory school age. All families have to go through the same admissions process with the Council in line with the Admissions Code of Practice. The full policy can be obtained from the office, however we are not proposing any changes apart from those outlined above. If you would like to comment on the proposed changes please write to the clerk of the Governing Body and hand it to the office by the end of October.
