ASH WEDNESDAY IMPOSITION OF ASHES
Wednesday, March 6, is Ash Wednesday, when
there will be a 10:00 a.m. Ash Wednesday
service with Holy Communion and the
Imposition of Ashes. After the service,
Chaplain Theresa Brion will make resident and
staff visits to offer the imposition of ashes for
those unable to attend the service. She will
make a general walk through the public areas,
the Health Care Center, and the Assisted Living
floors to make it available to those who wish
the imposition of ashes. She also is glad to visit resident apartments
and staff departments if those who are interested in those visits contact
her by phone (Ext. 7224) or email ([email protected])
between now and then. Visits will occur after the service ends
(approximately 11:00 a.m. and thereafter).
RESIDENT RIGHTS REVIEW
It is the policy of Goodwin House Incorporated, and a regulation of the
Virginia Department of Social Services and the Virginia Department of
Health, that residents be provided information concerning Residents’
Rights on an annual basis. At Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads, we
do such a review in February.
All residents are reminded that a copy of Resident Rights is posted in
the Mail Room. Each resident in Residential Living will receive a copy
of Residents’ Rights in their mailboxes at the Reception Desk. There
will be a confirmation sheet to sign, tear off and return to
Administration or to place in a box at the Reception Desk. Residents
on Assisted Living, The Terrace and the Health Care Center, or their
proxy, will be approached individually.
Please contact Ruth Reagan,
Director of Social Work, with
questions at Ext. 7122.

Join the Industrial Evolution…
Step back in time to the early days of a port city of Baltimore. Visit the Baltimore Museum of Industry
and experience the industrial past. This trip is planned for Thursday, March 7. Expect to see the sign-up
sheet very soon in the Resident Business Center. We want to have travelers identified as soon as possible.
The museum comes alive as skilled Museum Educators demonstrate working museum artifacts such as
our belt-driven machine shop, a vertical shear, and a printing press. In the process, our guided tour
engages participants in discussions and deepens their understanding of the ways that innovation,
entrepreneurship, and technology have shaped Baltimore’s industrial history. There is an entry fee of
$6.00. Transportation fee is $20.00.
Hermann Hesse
Monday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m. in the Formal Parlor
The German author Hermann Hesse was a spinner of incredibly diverse tales
crafted from a voracious reading of literature, both Classic and more
contemporary. His novels include the wonderful Gertrude (roughly a
Bildungsroman), the heart-rending Rosshalde, the devastating Demian which so
enthralled the generation of the Great War and established his reputation, the
experimental novel Steppenwolf with its music and drugs (30 years before the
Hippies!), and the wide-ranging Narcissus and Goldmund with its contrast of icy
cold intellectuality and the quest for the fullest experiences of life. Though he
believed America would never be receptive to his work, many Americans of the
1970s met Hesse in the unusual perspectives of this son and grandson of
missionaries on Eastern spiritual values in Siddhartha and the slim but deeply-
felt Journey to the East; in the artistic/intellectual burden of Beneath the Wheel
and Peter Camenzind; and, finally, in the sublime Glass Bead Game (Magister
Ludi), with Hesse’s friend Thomas Mann’s Doktor Faustus easily the greatest works in German in the
first half of the twentieth century—and perhaps in any language. His poems reflect his innate gentleness
and a lyric beauty not unlike that of Rilke; frequent alliteration and not unpleasant ironies give them, as
all of his creation, a uniquely appealing style. A pacifist throughout his life, Hesse and his works were
given the accolade of being repudiated by the Third Reich; the author was deprived of his citizenship and
his works were publicly burned. Mann fled to the United States and with conscious and subtle ironies
penned an inversion of the traditional Faust story; Hesse remained in neutral Switzerland and addressed a
beautiful future troubled by an abdication of intellectual and artistic responsibilities. Overall, Hesse’s
works reflect a deep concern with artistic and humanistic ideals—with music in Steppenwolf, Gertrude,
Magister Ludi; with ar t in Rosshalde and Narcissus and Goldmund; with poetry and a co-
relationship of the sciences and math with aesthetics and philosophy, especially in Magister Ludi. Truly a
writer, a spiritual guide, for our time, and all time.
Join former Administrative Assistant Michael Calhoun on Monday, March 4, at 3:00 p.m. in the Formal
Parlor for a discussion of Hesse and his oeuvre. Special attention will be given to Demian,
Rosshalde, The Glass Bead Game, and, unusually, to his less well-known Gertrude. This is a great
introduction to Hermann Hesse if you aren’t familiar with his works. Please feel free to bring your
favorite light beverage for this informal discussion.

Bryce Scholar, Director of Safety & Security, will be holding a Safety Warden Review Training.
When: Friday, March 8
Time: 10:00 -11:00 a.m.

interested in becoming safety wardens to attend.
VOLUNTEERS
Please save the date! This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Event will be held on Wednesday, April 24, from
3:30-4:30 p.m. More details are to follow. Please contact Greta Christ, Volunteer Coordinator, for any
questions at Ext. 7671.
Rick Lewis, one of our Technology Volunteers, is going to be switching his availability form Fridays to
Wednesdays effective Friday, March 1. If you are in need of Technology Assistance, please view the sign-
up book located in the Resident Business Center.
KNOLL GARDEN SPRING CLEANING—Volunteers Needed
There will be a spring Knoll Garden cleanup Saturday, March 9, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. (Rain date is
Saturday, March 23.) We will have rakes and clippers for volunteers and folks will be out there to tell you
what to do and where. Some dead leaves need to be removed from plants, and leaves need to be gently
raked out. It is already time to begin weeding! All help will be much appreciated.
GROUNDS COMMITTEE
February has been a cloudy, rainy month but spring is really just around the corner. In the Knoll Garden,
snowdrops, winter aconite, witch-hazel and hellebore have already bloomed.
Here are two opportunities to enjoy the change in season on the Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads
campus.
One opportunity would be to tend a segment of the Knoll Garden; call Bill Aylor at Ext. 7559.
Another would be to sign up for one of the garden boxes on the Pointe Patio. All boxes are taken now;
to be put on the waiting list, call Grounds Supervisor Carol Parker at Ext. 7465.
If this all sounds too much like work, perhaps what you'd enjoy most would be just walking in the Knoll
Garden and on the Pointe Patio to admire what's happening.
MUSEUM TRIPS
On Wednesday, March 13, our trip to the National Mall will take us to two quite different museums -- the
National Building Museum and the National Postal Museum. Take your choice. As usual, the bus will
leave at 9:30 a.m. Note: We had planned this for January, but the closure of non-essential government
offices caused our deferral. Then, in February, we were preempted by a different trip planned earlier. This
time, “the good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise” we will make it.

COMMUNITY CORNER
Although the weather outside might be “frightful”, the fireplace in our lobby and library “are
so delightful”…and you know the rest. It is comforting to know the roads and sidewalks are
not our problem when it snows. And yet, there are others who make it possible for us to “brave the
weather” when needed. Many of us have been aware of the sounds of snow plows and shovels late at night
or in the wee small hours of the morning. We feel reassured that when we awaken, a journey outside will
be possible. The people who are making this possible are the following staff members: from Grounds
(Danny Moore and Carol Parker), from Security (David Savory), from Facilities Tech (Aaron Haynie and
Santos Lagunas, Supervisors, together with Osman Gutierres, Alusine Kamara, Alireza Shams, Augustine
Taylor, Amaha Yimer, and Jose Jordon from HVAC Tech. Those who volunteer to be here through the
night are provided with sleeping quarters and breakfast. Most CCRCs contract with outside companies to
do this job but GHBC has always relied on its own personnel…a group of dedicated men and women who
are always coming to our rescue when needed! The sounds of winter are not yet over! Isn’t it such a
pleasure to reside at 3440 S. Jefferson Street!

Reservations for the Sunday Brunch on March 17 will open on Sunday, March 3. To make your
reservation, please call Ext. 7645. Parties are limited to no more than six people. Limited seating.
Due to staffing levels, effective March 1, the Fireside will be open four nights a week, Thursday thru

Residents are encouraged to use the area designated for rollators/walkers in the Bistro for safety. Staff
are more than willing to assist you if needed.
CONFIDANT PROGRAM
Privacy laws prohibit GHBC staff from sharing protected health information
about residents. In an effort to keep friends connected, the Resident Health
Committee determined that GHBC would maintain a “Directory of Resident
Confidants.” Each GHBC resident may designate a fellow in-house resident as
their “confidant.” In the event of a hospitalization, the Reception Desk will
contact the resident’s designated confidant, as soon as possible and between
the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., to inform him/her of the resident’s
whereabouts. In the event of an in-house relocation, the Reception Desk will
be able to provide the new room number to the confidant and others who ask at
the Reception Desk. Please note that specific health information will not be shared.
If you are interested in participating in the GHBC Confidant Program, please complete a confidant designation
form to the Clinic desk. Confidant designation forms are available at the Clinic and from all GHBC Social
Workers. If you currently participate in the Confidant Program, please use this notice as an opportunity to
review your designation and make any necessary changes.
If you have any questions, please contact Barbara Fornoff, LCSW, ext. 7225.

TUESDAY MOVIE – STARDUST: THE BETTE DAVIS STORY — Described as a "benevolent
volcano" by Olivia de Havilland, Tinseltown icon Bette Davis earned her reputation as a great actress and an
uncompromising trailblazer. The iron-willed star's offscreen alter ego often matched her on-screen persona.
Through film clips, newsreel footage, photos and interviews with Davis's Hollywood contemporaries, director
Peter Jones paints a mesmerizing portrait of a complex cinema legend. Tuesday, March 5, 2:00 p.m. in the
Media Room. 2006, NR, 1 hour . 30 minutes.
GREEN TEAM MOVIE - The Green Team will present “Our Blue Planet”, the final episode of BBC’s Blue
Planet II film series narrated by David Attenborough. In this film, we learn about the dangers to our oceans,
and meet men and women who work to protect them. Fishermen and scientists saved Norway’s
fisheries when their herring began to disappear. They imposed fishing restrictions and used modern
technology to track the herring population. Leatherback turtles were becoming extinct until a resident of
Trinidad realized he could prevent that from happening by patroling the beaches to discourage hunting, and by
educating the children. Hopeful stories like these are measured against the reality of our endangered
oceans. Come and enjoy this stunning film Wednesday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium.
WEDNESDAY GREAT COURSES - MYTH IN HUMAN HISTORY - From creation Myths to Gods and
Goddesses, take a look inside some of history’s greatest myths. Wednesday, March 6, at 3:00 p.m. in the
Media Room.
SATURDAY EVENING MOVIE – A STAR IS BORN— Seasoned musician Jackson Maine (Bradley
Cooper) discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally (Lady Gaga). She has just about given up on
her dream to make it big as a singer…until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally's career takes
off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own
internal demons. Saturday, March 9, 7:15 p.m. in the Auditorium. 2018 Rated R, 2 hours 16 minutes.

A Century in the Making: Designing and Building the National Museum of African
American History and Culture
The Smithsonian’s nineteenth museum opened to great fanfare on the National
Mall in 2016. But efforts to build a museum to recognize African Americans’
contribution to the building and shaping of this country date back to 1915. It was
not until 2003, when George W. Bush signed the National Museum of African
American History and Culture Act, that the museum was finally on the road to
reality. Bryan Sieling, Chief of Design for the museum, will speak about the
making of the museum from a planning, design, and construction perspective
through behind-the-scenes images and plans. Please join us Thursday, March 7, at
7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium.
