Dear Westall Secondary College Community, Four weeks down for the term already. What a busy 4 weeks it has been. Year 10 work experience, Year 9 Odyssey Camp, Course Information Night and subject selection interviews for 2016 have already taken place. Just this week, on Tuesday 4th August, we had our School Athletics Day at Noble Park. Whilst the weather was very cold there was thankfully no rain and the character, commitment and endeavour of our students was there for all to see. I didn’t hear any student complaining about the cold, they just got on with things, running, jumping and throwing for their houses and cheering each other on. The staff relay at the end of the day was also a highlight. Well done to everyone on a fantastic day and special mention to Mr Roberts, our Sports Leader, for bringing it all together on the day. I recently visited the Victorian School of Languages (VSL) main campus and head office based in Thornbury. There are satellite campuses all around Melbourne and we host one of those campuses here at Westall. Portuguese, German, Khmer and Vietnamese are all offered from Westall Secondary College each Saturday and it only costs $70 per student for the year. This is also the 80th anniversary for the VSL and I attended a ceremony at Parliament House on Tuesday night after our Athletic Sports to recognise this achievement. I promised the VSL Principal, Frank Merlino, I would remind staff and students about VSL and the opportunities they offer. Feel free to contact the College and ask to speak to Kon to find out more. We are getting quotes on a new digital sign for the front of the school at the moment and have in-principle support from Transpacific toward the signage. This will be an exciting new development near our front entrance and provide our students, parents and the broader community with a range of information about the school and events taking place. We are currently looking at our arrangements for the end of this year and are very keen to get students started on their 2016 classes and programs before they leave for summer holidays. Many secondary schools commence the following year in the last few weeks of the current year. This means each year level moves up a year level at the end of the year for at least a week or more. I want to ensure that students are engaged in meaningful and rigorous work right up until the end of the year and I also want to ensure our Year 11 and 12 students especially, get a bit of a head start on next year’s work and an opportunity to plan and revise during summer holidays. The proposed timeline is:
Year 10/11 exams for this year finish on 27/11 so propose 2016 timetable commences for all year levels on Monday 30/11.
IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS: Parents/Guardians who have changed their occupation status since the beginning
of 2015 please inform the College as soon as possible. It is a DET requirement for us to have accurate records of family occupations in the school.

the front office of the College, for the flood victims in Myanmar (Burma) .
Thank you for your support
Year 11 and 12 2016 cohort do 1 week of headstart 30/11-4/12 and are dismissed for the year on 4/12 as per Department of Education and Training end of year timelines.
Year 8-10 2016 cohort do 2 weeks of headstart 30/11-11/12.
Year 8-10 2016 cohort then do 4 days end of year activities, 14/12 – 17/12 In the coming weeks our students will be asked to describe what the perfect school for Westall should look like. What subjects and programs should be offered, different school structures and facilities and what events and activities that would make our school even greater than it is now. Every student will receive a survey around these topics and we look forward to this infor-mation and input from our students driving these improvements into the future. Just a reminder that parking is not allowed in the Westall Primary School Car Park. Please observe this request for the safety of all. Until next time! Tristan Lanarus Principal

Immunisation Program News
If you have missed out on your immunisations earlier this year, there is still time to get them done for free!
Please refer to the important announcement from the City of Kingston, included in this newsletter.
A reminder to all students and families of VCE students
The VCE Examination period is quickly approaching and preparation for this stressful period must be planned for in advance. The
College expects all VCE students to attend school from the start of the day until the end of the school day period, regardless of
the individual timetable of each student. Students who have a study period first thing in the morning or after lunch are expected
to be at school and use study periods productively in the VCE Centre or the Library. Healthy eating, regular exercise and adequate
rest will assist and are also very important.
It’s very important to focus and put in as much effort as possible in preparation for the final chapter of the secondary school
journey!

Information Evening—A great success
Thank you to all parents and families who attended the years 8 to 11 Information Evening on the 23rd of July. The evening was a
great success and it was really encouraging to see such an increase in the number of families getting involved in College events.
Congratulations to the students who were the Prize Winners (a bag of goodies) for visiting all the subject based displays organ-
ised by staff.
2015 Waste Forum
3.
On the 28th of July the VCAL seniors were the hosts for the Annual Youth Waste Forum
2015. There were many Primary schools present on that day and representatives from
different environmental organisations such as: EPA (Environmental Protection Authority),
Environmix, Transpacific, City of Kingston, Clayton Regional Landfill and TOAG.
The waste forum was aimed at educating the young primary students about waste issues
and having a say in the local environment. It was also a chance for them to meet and dis-
cuss their concerns with the major stakeholders in the environmental waste industry.
It was a very successful event and everyone who attended went away with a good sense of
the issues that everyone faces in the future.
Year 9 Odyssey Camp
On 20th to 22nd of July, the year 9 students participated in the Odyssey Camp at Campaspe Downs in Kyneton. Campaspe Downs is a residential adventure camp for school groups, set in 160 acres of natural bushland on the outskirts of the Macedon Ranges. The aim was to provide all of our year 9 students with an engaging experience, which took their learning out of the classroom. This involved developing their teamwork, leadership and organisational skills. Activities that were part of the program were walking tours during which students observed ecosystems, team building activities, orienteering which included learning to read maps and navigate survival in the bush and an evening camp fire. Students also participated in fun activities such as abseiling, flying fox and archery. Despite the windy, wet and cold weather the students didn’t complain and continued with the mental and physical challenges. The camp was a great success and all the students enjoyed every minute of it. The camp staff were very hard working and provid-ed the students with the best of care and also a fun, educational experience. A big thank you to Ms Longano and Miss Kerwick for all your support during the camp. Mr Tran Year 9 Coordinator and Odyssey Coordinator

Level Crossing Removal Project—Caulfield to Dandenong Community Update
5.
The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) is removing 50 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne. The Level
Crossing Removal Project: Caulfield to Dandenong will remove 9 level crossings along the Cranbourne-Pakenham rail corridor. The
project will also rebuild 4 stations at Carnegie, Murrumbeena, Clayton and Hughesdale, and upgrade power and signalling.
The Government has allocated $2.4 billion in the State Budget to remove at least 20 level crossings over the next 4 years. Con-
struction on the Level Crossing Project Caulfield to Dandenong will begin in 2016 and all nine level crossings will be removed by
late 2018.
The 9 level crossings to be removed are:
How will you benefit?
As a community member: the Level Crossing Removal Project: Caulfield to Dandenong will create a road and rail network that gets people out of traffic and home safer, and faster.
As a public transport passenger: removing 9 level crossings will allow for additional services to be added to the Cranbourne-Pakenham rail line. Passengers at Carnegie, Murrumbeena, Clayton and Hughesdale will also benefit from a rebuilt station.
As a business owner: you won’t be stuck at boom gates on your way to or from work everyday. The project will stimulate eco-nomic growth by crating mobile, safe and free flowing road and rail networks that get people where they need to be.
When combined with the Cranbourne Pakenham Rail Upgrade, the Caulfield to Dandenong level crossing removals will create space for an extra 11000 passengers on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line during the morning peak. Other works being delivered as part of the Cranbourne Pakenham Rail Upgrade include 37 new high capacity trains, a new train depot and maintenance facility in Pakenham, and new and Upgraded power and signalling along the corridor.
