Dear Westbrook Parents, Our school year is off to a wonderful start. We are in our 3rd week of school and the children are adjusting to their new routines, making new friends, reviewing past learning, and building up new learning. The teachers have worked very hard to prepare for the students and the exciting new learning they will facilitate in their classrooms. We are all so happy to have our students back at school. Adjusting to the school routines can take some time for families after the long summer vacation. Children may have been used to staying up later, eating at various times, and getting up later in the mornings. But now, we all have to acclimate ourselves to a school hours routine… and many parents have to fit extra tasks into their own work schedules as well. Studies show that kids (and parents!) do better when they have adequate rest. So, try to think of how you can make your evenings a little slower-paced, and help your child get to bed earlier. Looking forward to bedtime stories together might be an incentive! Attending our Book Fair on September 16 and 17 will be a great way to grow your at-home library of bedtime stories. The other topic I wanted to mention in this letter, is the safety and welfare of our students and staff. We practice our safety drills to ensure that student and staff know the steps to take in case of an emergency. During the first week of school, we practiced a fire drill, a severe weather drill, and a lockdown drill. (Now that all district classrooms have new door locks, they are more easily locked in case of emergency.) We will continue to practice these drills, and will have our Glenview first responders present in order to provide feedback to improve the effectiveness of our safety procedures. Student safety during drop off and pickup times is also a concern. If you drive your child to and from school, or walk them to the playground, please continue to be patient and follow the adults who direct the traffic. It is crowded during arrival and dismissal times, and we ask that everyone help us by remaining alert (NO cell phones!) and courteous to our fellow drivers, and our wonderful “traffic directors”. Thank you so much! I look forward to seeing you on September 17 at the Ice Cream Social, and I will be reading a book during Story Time. We are so fortunate to have our PTA to hold these wonderful family events! Sincerely, Mary Sue Smith, acting principal

FROM THE OFFICE Thanks to everyone who has signed up to receive the electronic version of the school newsletter. It will be posted on our website @ www.glenview34.org/wb. It is not too late to let the office know if you would like to opt out in receiving paper copies. FROM THE GLENVIEW POLICE DEPARTMENT Be sure to DRIVE CAUTIOSLY when school is in session.

• Watch for children on their way to and from school • Pat attention to all school zone signs, signals and markings. • Watch your speed.

THE BOOK FAIR IS COMING! The school is excited about the upcoming Book Fair, a PTA sponsored event. There will be TONS of great books to select from at the Book Fair. Don't miss this opportunity to find a great book for your child and support our school. Families are welcome to stop by the Book Fair with their child's class or any time that it is open. Make sure to bring your entire family on Thursday, September 17th in the evening when the Book Fair and Ice Cream Social will both be open. PLAYGROUND PROCEDURES Our expectations of the children are that they follow the school rules while on the playground. Mrs. Koehler and Mrs. Evans, our PE teachers, review these rules regularly with the children. For the safety of the children, we ask that school staff be the only adults on the playground during school hours (from 8:40 a.m.-3:30 p.m.). This space is often used for student learning. Any adults on the playground will be asked to report to the office by school staff. We also ask parents to not bring their pets, even if they are leashed, when dropping off children on the playground or at the front door.
