Kenya enacted a new constitution in 2010 whose centre-piece was the Devolved System of Governance that

created 47 new counties. In 2013, the first elections under the new constitution ushered in 47 Governors. Devolution as a Governance framework was to ‘bring service delivery closer’ to the Citizenry by involving them more as participants in development and governance.

In April 2013, the Kisumu Business Xchange Forum was formed with the purpose & objective of ‘mobilizing professionals & entrepreneurs from Kisumu & beyond as a networking platform with County Government and development partners’ with the aim of using business solutions as a platform for addressing and mitigating development challenges.

This was and still is the only platform that brings together Businesses, Entrepreneurs’ and Investors with a common purpose and agenda to:

Network & connect corporate & business leaders with entrepreneurs.

Improve the business environment by way of focused investment in Kisumu County.

Provide platforms for job creation among youth & unemployed member of the county.

Improve infrastructure & livelihoods of the

county residents.

The forum organized the Inaugural Arise Kisumu Business Summit 2013 that was addressed by amongst others Governor Jack Ranguma, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, then KAM Chairman Polycup Igathe, FKE Executive Director Jacklyn Mugo, Binyavanga Wainaina of Kwani Trust, Charles Ogalo of Genesis Capital, Leading Investors, and local business leaders.

The Arise Kisumu Business Summit 2013 challenged KBXF to look into two key challenges i.e. the Youth Unemployment Challenge and Revival of Commercial Agriculture and Cottage Industry. It is this very challenge that motivated KBXF to organize the very first ever Investment Forum in Western Kenya focused on Agribusiness.

The KBXF hence created a multi-stakeholder platform the Western Agribusiness Investment Symposium & Exhibition 2014 (WASE) as Convenor with the aim of bringing together leading farmers, farming & agricultural experts’, farm inputs vendors, Key Farm produce buyers, Investors, Financing Institutions & Agro-Processors on a round-table with National & Local Government, Donors & NGO’s.

Hon. Felix Koske, Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture was the Keynote Speaker and Officially opened the Symposium assisted

The Symposium drew participants from Private Sector with Bidco, Export Trading Group Carolina Fresh Produce, East Africa Maltings, Amiran, Simba Corp, Chase Bank amongst others.

The technical team was led by Jan Willem van Es of Saham Global supported by a technical advisory team & with generous Technical & Financial support from USAID-KAVES & financial sponsorship from Vihiga County, Kisumu County, Simba Corp, Safaricom & Chase Bank amongst others.

We are grateful for many other partners, exhibitors, sponsors & participants who made it possible & the 120+ organizations & firms that were represented by more than 400 participants.

We look forward to welcoming you again at our 2nd edition WASE 2015 to be held in October, 2015.

8 The Western Agribusiness Investment Symposium & Exhibition

This symposium has proven to me that there are a number of serious Western Kenyans that are changing the mind-set and ready to invest in professional agriculture. Several of the delegates, after considering the positive results of the champion projects that

were presented, have decided to venture into agriculture and food processing. This is a huge outcome, and for me, the stimulus to immediately continue with the subject matter by following up on started projects and preparing for the next edition of WASE.

I am very pleased to hear many of the panellists confirming my thoughts about the right approach towards a more significant agribusiness development in Western Kenya starting.

Message by the Symposium Director

Background

Forward

There is falling agricultural economy in Nyanza and Western regions since independence. Most parts have lost a significant amount of processing capacity in the last few decades, particularly in cotton, tobacco, sugar, tea, beverages, fruits, grains, vegetables, fish and

livestock. Farm prices for many raw commodities have been at historically low price levels, farm yields have dropped at alarming rates and resulted to poor farm net-incomes.

As part of a program of farm supports, governments have been encouraging farmers to both diversify their operations and explore value added opportunities. The accomplishment, however, of such efforts is yet to be met. The Western Agribusiness Investment Symposium and Exhibition (WASE) is an initiative that involves various leaders from the Lake Victoria region whose goal is to further develop the agribusiness sector in the former Nyanza and Western provinces.

Achieving greater food security and incomes for the individuals involved in all elements of the agribusiness value chain is possible if we provide an opportunity for participants and observers to work with agricultural economists and governments on various pro-agriculture-based policies.

The 10 Counties include Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, and Busia; all of which have been working on methods to ease trade in agricultural commodities within them by pooling resources as well as seeking ways of attracting more young people to farming.

As a result, we will account for 30 percent of added value in agriculture, while more than 75% of Kenyans make some part of their living in agriculture.

According to World Bank 75% of population live in rural Kenya (2013); the country attains an average of 4.6% Annual GDP growth, out of which, agriculture accounts for 30 percent of added value (2012). Source: Feed the Future

Kenya has the largest, most diversified economy in East Africa. Agriculture is the backbone of this economy and central to the Government of Kenya’s development strategy. In fact, more than 75% of Kenyans make some part of their living in agriculture. Yet agricultural productivity is stagnating while Kenya’s population is rapidly growing. Most farmers work without basic agricultural inputs or updated technology and lack adequate financial or extension services. Source: Farm Africa

Kenya is a low income country – 46% in poverty and 30.4% undernourishment. There are high levels of inequality with rural and low-income families most disadvantaged. Unfortunately, much dependence on agriculture increases vulnerability to climate change.

Western part of Kenya consists of 10 Counties that are mostly inhabited by Luhya, Luo, Kisii, Kuria and Suba communities. In accordance to the 2009 Population Census, 4.7 million are male and 5.0 million are female gender. An average of 46.5% of the total population is aged below 15.

According to the fourth schedule of the Constitution of Kenya, the roles of County Governments in trade development, regulation, planning and policy that affect agriculture are:

Crop and animal husbandry; Livestock sale yards; County abattoirs (slaughterhouses); Plant and animal disease control; Fisheries; Markets; Trade licences (excluding regulation of professions); Fair trading practices; Cooperative societies; statistics; land survey and mapping; Implementation of specific national government policies on natural resources and environmental conservation; soil and water conservation; and forestry.

The gateway to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and DRC Congo

Bungoma County is a sugar source, with one of the country’s largest sugar factories –Nzoia Sugar Company, as well as, numerous small-holder sugar mills. Maize is also grown for subsistence, alongside pearl millet and sorghum. Dairy farming is widely practised, as well as the raising of poultry. Major markets in the County are Kimilili, that trades on Thursday and Bungoma that trades on Wednesday.

A land of sugar, rain forests and bull-fights

Kakamega County hosts both subsistence and cash crop farmers. Sugar cane is the most preferred medium to large scale crop. A lot of small-holders practise livestock and poultry farming. The County hosts three sugar factories namely Mumias Sugar Company (the largest in East Africa), West Kenya Sugar Factory and Butali Sugar Mills. The main trading markets are Moi’s Bridge and Butali on Monday; Kakamega on Wednesday; Soy on Thursday; and, Matunda on Saturday.

Dominated by wetlands, cassava, granites and iron stones

Busia County boasts water sources Nzoia River and Lake Victoria. The dominant economic activity is fishing. Farmers experience perennial floods from Nzoia River, resulting to limited commercial farming, mainly of sugar cane. Subsistence farming of cassava is widely practiced. Nambale is the most dominant market that trades on Monday and Thursday.

Tea landscapes, amid a hill of vision and the crying stones

Vihiga County has large tea plantations that neighbour Nandi County. It is the most densely populated rural area in Kenya. Dairy and poultry farming is also widely practised, a County famous for quails. Being hilly, quarrying for construction materials is a significant economic activity. Luanda market, near Mbale trades on Monday and Thursday.

A combination of fresh lake fish, breathtaking Islands, cotton and Sunflower

Homa Bay County enjoys proximity to Lake Victoria, North and West. Most dwellers are primarily fishermen, some grow sunflowers on large-scale and small-holder farmers grow maize, sugarcane, millet, potatoes and vegetables. The fish caught in the lake is consumed locally. The surplus is sold to neighbouring towns and some exported to international markets of Europe and other countries. The main markets: Oyugis, Ong’er and Ndhiwa trade on Tuesday and Friday; Rodi Kopany trades on Thursday; and Ringa closes on Sunday.

The Lakeside City, home to fish, livestock, sugarcane and rice

Kisumu County main economic resources are agricultural land, fisheries, and water.

Page 14: Western Agribusiness Report 2014

14 The Western Agribusiness Investment Symposium & Exhibition

Main economic activities/industries are subsistence farming, livestock keeping, fishing in Lake Victoria; rice farming in Ahero and Nyando; sugar cane farming in Muhoroni; and small scale trading. Kisumu City, the capital enhances trade development within the County. There are many main markets that trade on different days: Kibuye and Muhoroni (Sunday); Nyakwere (Monday); Ahero, Holo and Awasi (Tuesday); Kisian (Wednesday); Katito (Thursday); Kombewa (Friday); and Sondu (Monday/Wednesday/Friday).

An arrangement of wetlands, lakes, rivers, falls, forests, timber, fish, and rice

Besides being most famous as the home county of the father of US President Barrack Obama, Siaya County boasts wetlands like Yala Swamp, Ndanu Falls, Lake Kanyaboli and Lake Victoria. Agriculture and fishing are the main economic activities. Local agricultural production consists of rice, cotton, coffee, sugarcane, tobacco, kales, indigenous greens, bananas, sweet potatoes and cassava. A large number also practise dairy and poultry farming. Siaya people trade in several markets: Ndori (Monday); Aram (Monday/Thursday); Bondo (Tuesday/Friday); Akala and Siaya (Wednesday/Saturday).

Blend of topography, soil organic matter, and a beehive of agriculture and commerce

Kisii County is characterized by a hilly topography with several ridges and valleys. Kisii County exhibits a highland and equatorial climate resulting into a bimodal rainfall pattern. It is divided into three main ecological zones. About 90 percent of the residents rely on agriculture for economic empowerment with the main activities being subsistence farming, soapstone carvings, vegetable, bananas, dairy, tea, coffee and small scale farming. The growth of other cash crops such as sugarcane and pyrethrum, as well as, subsistence crops such as maize, beans and potatoes are supported by the red volcanic soils.

Kisii County exhibits a highland equatorial climate resulting into a bimodal rainfall pattern. Being a major business hub in the Western region, it is among the first major towns near the Kenya-Tanzania border serving as the first stop for traders and business community within region. Although it has are few industrial setups, the county has the potential for the establishment of large agro-based industries. The main market, Nyakongo, trades on Thursday and Sunday.

The land of mixed cultures, oil products, millet and Gold; a gateway to Tanzania

Migori County is a hub of two valuable resources resources: gold in Rongo Constituency and water from Kuja and Migori Rivers. However, 43% of population live below the poverty line. The main economic activities/industries are agriculture, fishing, manufacturing and mining. Farmers grow maize, millet, sugarcane, tobacco, coffee, sorghum, cotton, groundnuts, cassava, sweet potatoes, beans, sukuma-wiki, and sweet bananas. Migori borders Homa-Bay, Kisii and Narok Counties. South Nyanza (Sony) Sugar Company is the major factory serving sugarcane farmers in Migori and Kisii Counties. The soils are well-drained and tend to be loamy. However, agricultural production is restricted by the drought periods if no irrigation water is available. Migori town is connected by road to the Maasai Mara national park, and a well tarmacked road through Isebania and Kakrao to Mwanza in Tanzania. Awendo is a major market in the County that trades on Friday.

Page 15: Western Agribusiness Report 2014

15Scaling Agribusiness Potential in Western Region & Lake Victoria Trading Block

The hilly land of tea, coffee, pyrethrum and livestock

Nyamira County is similar to Kisii County since it was formerly part of Kisii district. Resources found in the County are livestock, arable land, pasture, and water. The main economic activities/industries: tea, coffee, pyrethrum, dairy farming, banana plantations. Other agricultural products are maize, beans, sorghum, finger millet, dairy products. The County experiences relatively good weather patterns with rainfall occurring regularly throughout the year. The main market is Miruka and it majorly trades on Wednesdays. While opportunities exist for development of large-scale irrigation schemes, the County Governments of Nyamira and Kisii are seeking an agreement to form an economic alliance.

Scaling the agribusiness potential of the Lake Victoria Trading Bloc

Lake Victoria supports the vibrant fishing industry and agriculture across the 10 Counties and the neighbouring regions. There are a number of fisheries in the Counties that process fish from the lake. There are also a number of factories that mill sugar from the cane plantations. The counties enjoy relatively good weather patterns throughout the year two rainy seasons annually.

Despite this, living standards are generally low and social amenities like running water and electricity are not available to the majority of the province’s residents. The Climate in Western Kenya region is tropical humid.

These Counties have a large area of arable land and agriculture is the stronghold of the economies. There is a combination of fisheries, livestock, poultry and key crops grown like horticulture, rice, sugarcane, cotton, pyrethrum, fruits, tea, coffee, sunflower, simsim, potatoes, tobacco, and many more. This depicts potential to level up processing of agricultural produce and animal products; and generating farm inputs, as well as, renewable energies. Practising climate-resilient agriculture, while addressing the issue of poverty among many households in the region, results to sustainable development. This and value addition to agricultural, livestock and fish products yearn for investments.

The first (2014) took place from 15th to 18th October, 2014 at Tom Mboya Labor College in Kisumu, Kenya. About 350 delegates from the public and private sectors attended the event to chart ways of scaling the region’s agribusiness potential and engage in concrete deal making sessions. Over 130 organizations were also represented.

The Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Hon. Felix Koskei, officially opened the Symposium, in the presence of the Conveners, representatives of partner organizations; scholars and members of policy think-tanks; and, representatives of institutions of higher learning, national and county governments, private companies in logistics, finance, insurance, telecommunications, media, consultancies, private equity funds and farming groups.

Principal Secretary for Industrialization and Enterprise Development, Hon. Dr. Wilson Songa, facilitated on the special session on cotton, sugar and energy that had other key players in the three sectors contribute.

Kisumu Business Xchange Forum is the convener of The Western Agribusiness Investment Symposium & Exhibition. Amb. Elkanah Odembo, Amb. Bruce Madete, Amb. Dennis Awori, and Mr. Paul Gondi have been instrumental in the establishment of WASE, as co-conveners. The Management includes Mr. Peter Achayo and Mr. Jan Willem van Es, founders of Kisumu Business Xchange Forum. Mr. Achayo is also Chief Executive of Gravitas Consulting, a marketing and public relations outfit based in Nairobi.

We have since received notable comments from both participants and non-participants who followed the proceedings on media. The same has enabled us to review even better ways to engage every stakeholder in agribusiness to ensure sustainable development of the ultimate goal that is to scale potential.

Amb. Elkanah Odembo (Co-Convenor),World Council of Credit Unions

Agriculture is the foundation of civilization. Africa is food insufficient despite having the largest arable land area of the world’s continents with famines and droughts being the order of the day.

The objective of the symposium is to facilitate strategic partnerships in agribusiness and all counties around the lake basin area are invited to participate in discussing ways in which agribusiness can stimulate the economy and be part of the strategy for renewal and rejuvenation of the region’s economy.

The inaugural Western Agribusiness Investment Symposium & Exhibition is a paradigm shifting event that seeks to take the region towards sustainable agriculture and family farming.

Gerald Gacheru, East Africa Maltings, a subsidiary of East Africa Breweries Limited

Our barley seed processing plant ensures that barley farmers get quality seed for commercial production, while our agribusiness team provides extension services. Farmers are pre-financed annually to the tune of KShs 500 million by giving them high yielding seed, fertilizer and other farm inputs on credit. In both Kenya and Uganda, we have started to develop sorghum as an additional brewing raw material. The potential to grow sorghum in East Africa is high. Once fully implemented, it will transform economically the regions where it will be grown.

Brenda Aluda, International Fertilizer Development Centre (IFDC)

Since 1974, IFDC has focused on increasing and sustaining food security and agricultural productivity through the development and transfer of effective and environmentally sound crop nutrient technology and agribusiness expertise.

They are formulating dedicated fertilizers that will be locally manufactured.

George Odingo, Technical Director, KAVES – USAID, Kenya

Local rice production is only 20% of the country’s needs while the balance is imported. Highland rice constitutes a major new opportunity for profitable smallholder farming.

H.E. Jack Ranguma, Governor, Kisumu County

The county government is working to strengthen economic fortunes of western Kenya region. The exchange of products for cash is the foundation of growth, and to achieve this we are encouraging economies of scale and working as a team. Let us avoid the ‘Serikali Saidia’ mentality and embrace professional agriculture to achieve self-sustenance. The region has potential and strength, let us leverage on the strong produce. We need a change of mentality and embrace agribusiness.

John Kariuki, Bidco Oil Refineries

Soya, sunflower and maize germs provide the raw materials for the value streams of Bidco’s products. We have a processing factory in Nakuru with a capacity of 36 tonnes of oil seed and have a deficit of 16 tonnes. We import most of our sunflower requirements from Uganda which is a challenge and an opportunity for us in Kenya.

Young people are encouraged to engage in farming and mechanization of farming is encouraged. We can create a Green Tsunami.

25Scaling Agribusiness Potential in Western Region & Lake Victoria Trading Block

Peter AchayoConvenor, CEO - Gravitas Consulting

The decision to organize Western Agribusiness Investment Symposium is based on the recognition that there exists many unexploited opportunities within the agricultural sector in the region. We need to look at agriculture as a business and farmers as private investors.

It is a forum where professionals can meet and exchange ideas on how to improve farm yields and create value addition in post-harvest treatment & food processing so as to ”Grow & Transform” the agricultural sector in the Lake Victoria Trading Bloc.

Hon. Felix Koskei, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries

The inaugural Western Agribusiness Investment Symposium seeks to unlock the agribusiness potential of the Lake Victoria Trading Bloc. The challenges include how to commercialize agricultural products by smallholders and how to generate the vast private-sector investment by farmers, SMEs and international companies needed to transform value chains from farm to fork.

The ten counties around the lake basin are showcasing the investment opportunities in agribusiness and they will play a unique role of fostering integration of inter-county investments and trade.

Emphasis is on key value chains in the western region including sugar, cotton, rice, fish and aquaculture, dairy, poultry, cereals, legumes and pulses, horticulture and tubers.

Erastus Ekidor, County Commissioner, Kisumu County

There exist some good policies for the agribusiness sector but there is poor implementation of these. Commercialization of the sector to increase productivity is required.

Joseph Alubakah, General Manager, Homalime Company Ltd

Homa Lime produces 90 tonnes of agricultural lime per day at the Koru factory. The effects of agricultural lime on soil are that it increases the pH of acidic soil (the higher the pH the less acidic the soil); in other words, soil acidity is reduced and alkalinity increased. It provides a source of calcium and magnesium for plants. It permits improved water penetration for acidic soils. It improves the uptake of major plant nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) of plants growing on acid soils.

Frederick Spits and Dan Ouko, FreeKenya Foundation

FreeKenya Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that aims at improving people’s lives positively by sharing knowledge and know-how and facilitating them in generating incomes. FreeKenya works by building capacities in soil management and urban farming by focusing on creating linkages, capacity building, training, awareness and resource mobilization.

Beatrice Kirui, Branch Manager, Kenya Seed

Kenya Seed Company was incorporated in 1956 with a mandate to research, develop, market and avail certified top quality, high yielding agricultural seeds of various varieties. The company currently has over 60 seed varieties of maize, wheat, sunflower, finger millet, horticultural seeds and legumes, upland rice, sesame seed, prosso millet, sugar beet, white sorghum, ground nuts, pigeon peas, cotton and climbing beans.

Sanjay Patel and Ravi Pawar, Agriterra Africa Ltd.

It is important to feed and protect the investment in plants by providing custom chemical application, crop scouting, crop protection products, seed conditioning, research and crop insurance.

H.E. Ambassador Shalom Cohen, Ambassador of the State of Israel to KenyaRepresented by Billy Kanyi, Trade Officer, Israeli High Commission

Kenya can not only be a food secure nation, but also a net exporter of high-quality agricultural produce. Be most assured of Israel’s maximum support and perpetual cooperation in this quest.

Thank you. Shalom.

Mark Okado, Project Coordinator, Carolina Fresh Produce

Kisumu Airport is not operational in terms of exports for horticulture and needs to be upgraded for this potential to be realized. The market is dynamic and cruel but it exists and needs proper organization to be effectively exploited.

Wainaina Kung’u, Export Trading Group

Aggregators work by collecting produce from many farmers and ensuring quality of all materials that is sourced. Kenya is a rice-deficit-country and this can be changed via mechanization to improve the productivity of the lands under cultivation.

Jean Njiru, Farm Africa

Farm Africa is working to improve access to inputs for fish farming.

Ike Allibhai, Managing Director, Africa Fleet Management Solutions (AFMS), a subsidiary of Simba Corporation

AFMS provides vehicles such as cars, generators, trucks, tractors and buses as well as fleet management solutions for farmer’s requirements for both cash buying and lease. A special symposium discount on all products as well as finance options is also available.

Hon. Dr. Gideon Ochanda, Member of Parliament for Bondo Constituency

Land consolidation efforts to achieve economies of scale are required to achieve productivity improvements. This will help to organize skills, capital and enterprise more effectively. Agriculture in Kenya is inefficient and land ownership and land access issues are among the bane of the sector in the country.

Since independence the fight for land is at the core of our struggles and the land tenure system is not beneficial. The present land ownership system should be revoked and the citizens should lease from the government.

We are at the forefront of this and have a Bondo Agro Revolution in which we have consolidated 230 acres after merging disparate parcels of land. This is the Value Farms initiative.

Bernard Odero, Managing Director, Western Fresh Industries (WEFI) Sunflower Farms

We are aggregating land parcels and have no title deeds for the individual units of the land we are working on. We are producing oil from sunflower.

Dr. Suleman Oketch, Somuc Agricultural Consultants (SAGRICON)

There is great need to restructure land-ownership to deliver on agribusiness. Between Kendu Bay and Homa Bay at Kimira Oluch we are working with the Lake Basin Development Authority to develop this sort of farm in which women and the youth are the main labour providers. Kisumu Airport needs cold storage facilities.

Kimathi Ikiao, Senior Portfolio Associate, Acumen Fund

Acumen Fund finances value chains and works with youth to bring dreams to fruition. It invests to create viable, high impact, long term investments.

Beatrice Obara, Managing Director, De’deby Enterprises

Factoring works well in ensuring fast payments to small holder farmers. We need a factoring house to expedite farmer payments. Ethiopia increased cotton production through this method.

Gem Argwings Kodhek, Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF)

There is need for change of perceptions about agriculture. The tragedy of farming in this part of the world is that policies are not well defined to promote the industry.

AECF has Ksh. 5 Billion available for investment in agribusiness oriented enterprises. It has invested in 194 companies of which 49 are in Kenya and only one in western Kenya. It provides soft money with no interest or equity requirements. The fund typically invests between Ksh. 20 M and 150 M.

The qualifications required are that the recipient provides matching funds and the project have a significant development impact. Among projects that have been funded include the TV show Shamba Shape-Up, Dominion Farms and the Western Seed Company.

Paul GondiCo-Convenor, Kenbright Insurance Brokers

Farmers are advised to take risk insurance when getting funding from banks. Insurance is required but be sure to read the small print first before signing. Avoid taking in-house insurance from banks as it leads to conflict of interest that is never in your advantage. Succession planning is a form of risk management that provides continuous success even after death.

Samson Okumu, Food Security Specialist, USAID Kenya

Policy issues are constraining growth of agribusiness and different farming models are being investigated with aggregation of small holder farms being encouraged. Food insecurity and poverty are major challenges but actionable plans within reasonable time frames are necessary to resolve these challenges.

H.G. Archbishop Zachaeus Okoth, Catholic Diocese of Kisumu

We should educate our children about Agribusiness for the betterment of the future. Land is the only resource God stopped creating. Let’s make good use of it. Water is a scarce resource. We must be able to use it efficiently. Agricultural succession is important. To accept this conference, is to accept implementation of the ideas discussed. We must learn to live and work together despite religion, tribe in diversity. We also need an Agribusiness resource centre that can train farmers.

---------------------------------------Dr. Wilson Songa, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Industrialization & Enterprise Development

Public-Private-Partnerships (PPPs) and joint conferences are very important like such a symposium which is important for regional growth. The private sector must be willing to engage. Special economic zones are the real game changers. We need a regional ‘special economic zone’ to provide gain at a competitive edge.

Enhanced public-private-partnership’s (PPP’s) is important for regional growth. Quick business registration is likely to improve investor funding in the country. Reducing risks involved in farming means increased funds for farmers. Rainfall-irrigated agriculture is not sustainable. Water management is important. The time for crying and lamenting is over – the time for action is now with us.

Makini School Kibos hosted the WASE 2014 participants to a sumptuous lunch prepared by WALES Catering. The School takes its social responsibility very seriously and the students are encouraged to give community service; they look forward to growing own food for feeding the students. Being all about pioneering and innovation, Makini aims to demonstrate farming for students interested in pursuing agriculture, agribusiness and agro-forestry.

The WASE 2014 participants planted trees at Makini School Kibos to commemorate a successful inauguration and a working relationship between WASE and Makini School.

There is a boost in understanding the empowerment of smallholders beyond farming techniques. Polytechnic education on farming, post-harvest treatment, farm-level production, processing, soil, water, agri-marketing and the production of renewable energy are vital in the drive to improve livelihood of rural Western Kenya.

The WASE 2015 will highlight: poultry value chain (KEGGFARMS), Fruits (ITC) and emphasize on fish processing and animal feeds processing.

Rural communities and agricultural producers are part of this new wave of thinking; small-scale food processing, on and off-farm, is emerging as one of the viable elements of a rural community economic development strategy. There are substantial new processing opportunities in this sphere. Two general responses are emerging. In one, farmers are looking for ways to move closer to consumers by taking over the processing of their raw products and locating plants on their farms or within rural communities. In the second, firms in small rural communities provide economic services to larger companies by developing plants that contract business from large companies.

These initiatives succeed by creating co-operations between producers of the raw product, the areas’ people and the processors.
