Western Area Chairman’s report

Autumn 2017

I hope that this finds you all well and having enjoyed your summer. I was delighted to see that yet again the summer school at Kingsley was successful and well attended, it has certainly grown in popularity, due to the considerable work and organization of Simon, thank you for all your hard work. It is no surprise to see that the Inclusion group in our Area ably run by Steve Westlake and his team are celebrating a really good result from the British Open Championships held at Stoke Mandeville recently, our Western Area players won for themselves Two Gold and Four Bronze medals at this top quality event, well done to all of you and the Coaching team. The Western Area Open this year, was a huge event and an equally huge success lasting over two days and we needed every hour of those days the entry was again full well prior to the closing date and even then the entries still kept coming! Con-gratulations to all of the Team who organized this event, it ran very well indeed. There are the Teams and Schools events still to run, so I expect that our organization team, will remain busy for a considerable time to come, thank you all. I have two Area meetings to attend in the next two weeks at Taunton, both business and Area Executive. Within all this preparation is the Area Coaching Seminar and Dan Grading held on the weekend of the 14th/15th October at Bath University this should be a very good weekend to attend so Coaches put the date in your diaries. I think possibly everyone knows Sandra Klinger in our Area and the immense work that she has done since becoming our Technical Officer, but as we know she went well beyond her remit and helped in just about every way possibly, well sadly Sandra has had to make a move away from that position, taking over a Senior coaching posi-tion within the BJA, she assures she will still be around but not as our technical Officer. From us all Sandra we will be a poorer Area without you and our sincerest thanks for everything that you have done for all of us. Finally a sad note to finish this report, two of our members have passed away, we shall not forget them, Roger Downs from Saltash Judo Club and Daniel Harrison a member of Exeter Judo Club and Exmouth Vikings Judo Club. Our thoughts are with their families and friends.

Dave Allen Chairman Western Area.

Bristol news It Summer is supposed to be a quiet time for judo but this doesn’t seem to have been the case this year. Bristol ref-erees and table officials have between them represented the County at National Teams, Western Area open and Heart of England.

The National teams was held in July in Kent. Josie Sparks and Amy Oram were selected for the Western Area Cadet team, the girls fought well just missing out on a place a semi final place.

The West of England at the end of July saw 17 players from Bristol taking part. Owen Davis in the Pre-cadets and Amy Oram in the Senior Women became West of England Champions. In the Minors Jayden Ansell took 5th place. In the Pre-cadets Holly Morris took Bronze, Patrick Smith took 5th place and Maddi Harris-Chivers took 6th place. In the Seniors Alan England and Sasha Foxon took bronze and Alex Bright took 5th place.

August saw the 8th John Davies Western Area Summer camp with 6 of our younger player enjoying the 4 days training camp in Bideford. Mack Todd, Patrick Smith, Jayden Ansell, Charis Oram, Holly Morris and Maddi Harris-Chivers all had a great time.

The Heart of England saw the age bands change. In the pre-cadets Gold for Joe Keen, Silver for Charis Oram, Bronze for Isabelle Rhodes-Fussell, Patrick Smith and Mack Todd. In the cadets Gold for Finley Norton and 5th place for Maddi Harris-Chivers. In the Juniors 7th place for Josie Sparks and in the Seniors 9th place for Luke Tavener.

Amy Oram was selected to represent England at the UK School Games, she took Gold in the individual event but her weight group wasn’t selected for the teams this year. England went on to win the individuals event and Gold and bronze in the team event.

We wish all our players the best in next few months competing at the Ippon league events in the run up to the British Championships in December.

We will be continuing to host our successful Inter-clubs and Under 8 training ses-sions which are a great introduction to competitions for our younger players.

We are hosting our first Bristol County Open competition on Sunday 8 October.

Lisa Oram

Secretary

Cornwall News

Over the summer months things have been quite quiet with players young and old being away on their holidays. Overall, the clubs in general have had a steady turn out on the mat. Now that everybody is back all clubs will be pushing for new mem-bers to give it a go.

The final Peninsula Schools Competition at Mullion School before the summer break was a great success, with 26 Junior and secondary schools sending players to represent them. As a result of this, we are going to make it an annual event and dates have already be set. Good luck to our older players who are going to compete in the British Masters and Eva Minarikova who is going to compete in the World Masters. With our clubs going from strength to strength its nice to see the younger ones coming though and starting to compete at local and at western area events, the fu-ture looks bright.

Devon news

A SHORT RESUME’ OF THE HALF YEAR SO FAR IN DEVON COUNTY’S ACTIVITIES

22nd January 2017 the Western area British school’s champs was a very busy for all Devon players from various schools around the county and they did us proud with the numerous medals and selections made. The first junior training session of the year was held at S. Brent with members from most of the Devon clubs present and the second just before the John Davies summer camp at Kingsley school with a turnout of some 54 players Plymouth Judo Club’s Shane Kimber and Mark Daly entered the High Wycombe Masters on 27th May and Shane came home with a well-earned silver medal which in turn has fired up the interest with oth-ers in the club and it is hoped to send a group to the British Masters later in the year. On an extremely cold day at the Torbay L/C all our clubs took medals at the Devon low grades on 5th February although Kingsley and S/B probably had the lions share. Due to the Murphy juniors date being brought forward and a lack of referees available on16th April meant we had to cancel the Devon open mini mons for this year. A new county coach Justin Allen was interviewed and appointed in March due to the stepping down of our county coach of three years A three mat area at Kingsbridge L/C saw the combined area junior and senior closed run alongside each other and with a combined entry of 170 players made it a very successful day. 5 Judoka from Devon Club South Brent, Adam Vosper & Josh Shipp(U-50), Tom Smith(U-55), Kolya Schwinge (U-73) and Max Gregory (O-81 were all selected to represent England at the Schools Games in Loughborough on the weekend of 2nd &3rd September with Max Gregory winning the gold in his weight. This is a showcasing event for the most talented schoolchildren in the country, so we can be proud of our young Devon players

ter. Alan Kimber.

Gloucester County News Autumn 2017

The County has had plenty going on since my last update in June. I mentioned in that article the upcoming Coaches Re-validation event which took place at the Dowty Club, and delivered by Sandra and Jurgen Klinger. Our chosen subject was Strength and Conditioning, and Sandra and Jurgen gave us an excellent insight in-to this complex subject. This was I assume the last time Sandra will deliver such a course at Dowty, which she has done, I think, every year she has been with the Western Area. We shall miss her help and involvement in our re-validation’s, but at the same time, wish her well in her new role. On the playing side, plenty of good results for the County, including another excel-lent West Open, but the selection of James Hayes from the Bradley Stoke JC for the Junior Europeans in September stands out as an excellent achievement for James, his Club, the County, and the Area. We wish him the best of luck. Worth mentioning as well that Harry Lovell-Hewitt from the Stroud Club, was also close to selection, commiserations to him, but his time will come. Finally on a personal note, we at the Dowty Club have recently bid farewell to Don Quinn, who has been with the Club for some 40 years both as a Player and Coach. Don is a 4th Dan, and Senior Club Coach, and he has been what you might call my Lieutenant for many years, he will be missed. Pete Salter Glos Chair

Somerset News What a productive quarter we have had, firstly the western area open. Congratulations to all the players that took part, you truly did your best and did Somerset proud. Secondly congratulations to those that passed their Dan grading, we know the training and dedi-cation involved in it, and it's not easy. We are looking forward to our new year of competitions and training, so best foot forward and let's get Somerset to the front. Bob Vickery Somerset County Chair

Wiltshire

This last quarter our Chairman has been hospitalised on several occasions with recurring medical problems. I’m sure that those of you that know Phil, will join Wiltshire in wishing him well. The impressive number of senior novice at the Perham Down Sapper Games give me hope that seniors Judo players are on the in-crease in Wiltshire. Regretfully Devizes Budo Clubs 42nd open event had to be cancelled due to shortage of officials. I would echo Peter Salters of Gloucester comments regarding the need for people to step-forward as officials, volunteers or committee members. At the Area Open Devizes player were again in the medal table with a Gold for Lottie Taylor-Hewitt and Bronze for Robyn Ward. And at NHC split grade at High Wycombe the following returned with medals Lew-is Mwesini, Jack Rackander, William Hickman, Lottie Taylor- Hewitt, Jasmin Edwards, Robyn Ward, Tom Kirwan, Tilley Creasy Cottle, Alfie Stocton and George Elliot . Up and coming Devizes, star Evan Molloy gained a place in GB visually-impaired (VI) squad and represented his Country at IBSA Judo European Championship at Walsall. During a brief period in the UK in June Tom Reid Commonwealth silver medallist was active at his old Devizes school promoting sporting values and participation, we could not have a finer Ambassador for judo, well done Tom. Swindon Judo Club junior squad under the guidance of Roy Walker have been steadily gaining competition experience, their confidence and quality is getting better and the youngster’s now frequent return with med-als. The club pays tribute to the mums and dads who tirelessly provide transport back and forth to far a field event. What would we do without them? A further plus is that it expands the pool of player that our County Coach Mark has available to form a squad Two of Swindon’s special needs players returned from the Brit-ish SN Championship at Stoke Manderville with gold medals a great achievement for them and their Coach Lee Adams. Having on past occasions worked with Nigel Porter I was saddened to hear of his sudden death, many will remember Nigel as the Coach at Salisbury and Larkhill Police Judo clubs. Sapper Games 2017 – Judo: the (not so) gentle way! For the second year in the row, Judo has made its presence felt with the Sapper Games hosted by Perham Down Judo Club. The event is a novice only com-petition, as such all competitors were required to have little or no Judo experience. Prior to the event Sapper Judo; ran a crash course on Tuesday evening and all day Wednesday, the main event being held on Thurs-day. The Coaching was provided by RE Judo coaches, Capt’s Alex Paske, Ancel Lupke and PC Bill Tweedie, a former Sapper, to ensuring that all competitors were given the best opportunity for the Thurs-day’s event. Much had to be crammed in to the intense 36 hours of training. The competition was a team based event with 11, three man teams competing. The event served as an in-troduction to Judo and could not have been achieved without the hard work of Major Dave Campey, his coaches plus Bill Taggert (Referee) Andy Gault Vice Chairman Wiltshire

Fudoshin Junior Team Cup Hosted By Kingsley School Judo Club Bideford, Devon Saturday 10th June 2017

A fantastic atmosphere and a sports hall full of committed young judoka all battling hard and showing lots of potential on the judo mat. This was the first ever Fudosin Team cup hosted by Kingsley School Judo Club in Bideford, Devon. The event was supported by the British Judo Association as a Level 1 tournament, and is designed to promote enjoyment and en-courage development in the early stages of the competition pathway for the lower level Judoka.

The event welcomed 9 teams in total across 3 categories, the teams travelled mainly from Bristol as well as the home teams from Kingsley. We also mixed a team up and created an All Stars team from the two Counties, this allowed for much more involvement as well as developing a good sense of respect and team work between the teams.

In the boys lightweight group Kingsley Samurai won Gold after winning all 3 matches, winning 12 contests in total throughout their bouts and gaining 171 points in total. Tristan Walters in the under 30kg and Bro-die Skinner under 50kg, who was making his Kingsley team debut, remained unbeaten all day winning all 3 contests by Ippon, with the rest of the team all producing some outstanding judo. Harry Lucas U35kg, Fintan Connor U40kg and Oliver McQuillam U45kg collected wins to support the teams overall victory. The All Stars team consisting Callum McMurray, Owen Davies, Stanley Norton, Jayden Ansell and Finley Dean, finished in Silver medal place after a dramatic last bout victory over the Bristol Bulldogs, when Finley Dean won his teams deciding bout by Ippon to secure Silver for his team with 7 victories in totals and gaining 70 points. Bristol Bulldogs finished in 3rd Place Bronze medal position’s with 6 victories and 60 points while Kingsley Knights took the 4th Place Bronze Medal.

In the Girls competition Bristol Bees won their entire contests to take top position on the podium with the Gold medal. The team which included Charis Oram, Holly Morris and Isabelle Rhodes produced some ex-cellent performances winning all but one of their 9 contests by Ippon. Kingsley Twilights with Brooke Maynard, Jersey Ledger, Amie McMurray and Aria Mitchell won the silver with Kingsley Wonder Girls win-ning the Bronze medal in the group with Amber McDonald, Grace McQuillam and Caitlyn De’Ath and gain-ing valuable competition experience for the future.

In the heavy weight boys event Kingsley Kings won the gold medal after overcoming a determined Bristol Bears over the best of three series final. In the first round Kingsley won 2-1 with two fabulous Ippons from Joshua Steer and Gareth Williams to help the Kings win the first round. In round two Mack Todd reversed his result with Josh Steer, however Brodie won his contest as did Gareth Williams to leave Kingsley now in a two – nil lead heading into the final round. The Bears won the first contest in the final round which set up a wonderful deciding contest between Mack Todd and Joshua Steer. This was a brilliant contest with both boys knowing the fate of the tie was in their hands, eventually though it was Josh you scored the all-important Ippon throw before Gareth won the final contest of the day against Jack Brown.

The event was a huge success and fought within the true values of the spirit of Judo. All the young athletes where a real credit to their clubs and I’m certain they all will have developed and gained many wonderful memories and experiences from the event. It’s hoped this event will become an annual tournament and we feel confident that other local Western Area judo clubs will welcome the opportunity to take part in 2018.Massive thanks to all the parents of the Judoka and the officials who supported to help the event take place.

Simon Ward
