Kids say the cutest things about Christmas

Christmas is for kids! No one gets more excited over the mystery and magic of Christmas than little kids.

Giggles erupt and faces light up with wide-eyed awe at the first glimpse of Santa Claus, the twinkling lights on the Christmas tree, and the presents beneath.

If only we could all go back in time to the pure innocence and complete belief in Christmas magic, but that is a gift bestowed only upon young children. And the young children of Community Child Care Center in Norway were more than willing to share some of their thoughts about the holiday.

Santa’s visit and the toys he will leave are the top things on the minds of the 4- and 5-year-olds in head teacher Carlene St. Onge’s class.

“I like Christmas because of Santa Claus and toys,” exclaimed Nathan Kimball. “And I hope I get Indiana Jones Legos.”

Evan Hamm is happy about Christmas because, “I get to see my Grandma and Nana and I hope Santa brings me a robot with remote control.”

“I help decorate the Christmas tree and put lights on it too,” said Jayden Langelier. “That’s what I like about Christmas.”

Christmas cookies for Santa are

very much on the minds of these youngsters as well.

Brooklynn Manson said, “I love the Christmas cooking and I help make cookies and put frosting and sprinkles on them and we put cookies in presents, too.”

Sara Davis helps make Christmas cookies, too. “I put them in the oven and put frosting on them all by myself and I bring them to school and we all eat them up.”

Ashlynn Dailey is looking forward to Santa’s visit and plans to feed him well. “I leave him cake and cookies and milk.”

“I’m going to have strawberry cookies and put sprinkles on them,” said Ella Pelletier. “And I’ll eat them with Teagan and Mommy and Daddy.”

Kassidy Andrews plans to leave cookies and milk for Santa as well.

“I’ll give him cookies and a little milk in a cup, it has a crack in it. I hope he brings me Legos.”

“I’m going to go with Daddy to get the Christmas tree,” exclaimed Austin McConkey. “It will go all the way up to the roof, but it won’t hurt the roof. We put little candy things on the tree, but you can’t eat them.”

“I hope I get a scooter from Santa,” said Sophie Billings. “Daddy and Ryan will help me with it.”

All the kids said they would go to bed early on Christmas Eve, apparently with visions of toys and cookies dancing in their heads.

“Santa is going to have to be very quiet,” explained Sara Davis, “so he won’t wake Mommy and Daddy because they sleep downstairs, and so he won’t wake us kids and, oh yeah, the cat, too.”

A popular way to measure and treasure your child’s physical growth is by making handprints as keepsakes. This activity spotlights ever yone’s favorite reindeer, Rudolph, and preseves your

child’s handprints in his “antlers”. While embarking upon this nifty winter project, your child will utilize manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination and hand/wrist flexibility.

What You Need:• Small paper plate• Large paper plate• Brown acrylic paint• Paint sponge or wide brush

• Large red pom-pom, 1 ½” • Brown craft foam• Tan craft foam or felt• Pair of googly eyes• Scissors• Stapler• Pen• Hole punch• Ribbon or yarn• Low temperature glue gun

What You Do:

1. Start by asking your child to paint both plates with a coat of brown paint. Set them aside to dry for a couple of hours.

2. Meanwhile, make the reindeer’s antlers. Trace your child’s left and right hands twice on brown craft

Fun and games help create family traditionAh, the holidays are nearly here once again -- a busy time when most homes are bustling with visiting friends and family, shopping, cooking, parties and present-wrapping. Although parents have many things to check off on their to-do lists, they continually look for ways to navigate this hectic time and keep family at the top of the list. This is often done by finding affordable activities that bring the whole family together and fostering traditions that can be carried on year after year.

This is a time when keeping things simple will yield the most positive results. Tradition doesn’t have to mean outdated or boring, and many annual rituals now have a modern twist. An afternoon walk or a game of touch football gets everyone active and outside. A day of cookie baking and decorating is fun, delicious and creates lasting memories. Many families enjoy watching annual holiday television specials like

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “It’s A Wonderful Life.” This year, the iconic holiday favorite, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” comes to a fun and interactive DVD board game that will be the perfect activity for a family game night.

The benefits of holiday activities are boundless, and time spent together as a family is priceless. All of these suggestions promote c o m m u n i c a t i o n , w o r k i n g together, fun and building annual

family customs that can be enjoyed every holiday season.

The f irst step to make these activities a success is to get the family excited. Let the majority decide what they want to do. Next, if cookie baking is the activity of choice, assign age-appropriate tasks for each family member. If everyone is going to sit down and play an interactive game like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer the DVD Game,” “Scene It?” or another classic like “20 Questions” or “Charades,” designate a start time and give everyone a role. Perhaps the youngest child chooses the snacks and the oldest sets up the gameboard, cards or DVD player. If there is a large age-range, team everyone up with a partner who can help. Be sure to get rid of distractions, let phones go to voicemail and don’t allow PDAs.

Set aside a specific amount of time for the activity. Making sure to end a game or sport before kids get bored or frustrated is key, and that gives parents a set time to resume errands and projects. Also, be flexible whenever possible. Bend the rules a bit if it makes family games more fun. Don’t worry about a mess in the kitchen until the baking is done, and let kids help even if it means the project takes longer.

No matter how you choose to keep everyone entertained during the holiday season, the most important thing is to enjoy being together. These are the memories that will last the longest, no matter what the season brings. (ARA)

antlers. Trace your child’s left and right hands twice on brown craft foam.

3. Ask your child to carefully cut both pairs of handprints out.

4. Next, ask your child to draw two ears on the tan craft foam or felt and cut them out. Those will be the inner section of the reindeer’s ears.

5. Using the tan cutouts as a guideline, your child can make a larger set by drawing around those shapes about half an inch wider all the way around. Have him cut those out and set them aside.

6. When the paint is dry, ask your youngster to glue the googly eyes onto the large plate.

7. Then, instruct him to glue the red pom-pom onto the smaller plate as shown.

8. Now it’s time to add the antlers. Have your child glue one antler to another and then to the back of the large plate using hot glue. Each side should have two pairs of adorable handprint antlers.
