Mark your calendars for Friday, September, 30, 2016. The NCBAA/WRCBAA will host The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans. The event will take place on the Skyline College campus, located in San Bruno, California. This event focuses on the efforts of helping students overcome obstacles in community college and your presence is important. WRCBAA wishes to thank Dr. Helen Benjamin, Chancellor, Contra Costa Community College District, for her unwavering support throughout the years. Whenever called upon, Dr. Benjamin is present and consistently contributes to our success. Dr. Benjamin exemplifies excellence. I can only hope that we may continue to listen to the wisdom that she so kindly and graciously shares with all of us as she continues with her journey. She will be retiring from Contra Costa Community College at the end of the year. I have confidence as the President of the Western Region Council on Black American Affairs that we will continue to follow our “Sankofa” tradition of looking back to help others as we move forward. This is our mission and we must strive to help others become part of higher education. It is more important than ever that we reach out to students, faculty, staff and administrators to continue to let our voices be heard. As always, I hope you consider joining as an institutional member. Take a moment and peruse our website at www.wrcbaa-ncbaa.org. I look forward to your involvement. Suffolk Gifted $1 Million From Alumnus, Largest Ever From a Graduate of The College

Suffolk County Community College recently received a $1 million to the Suffolk Community College Foundation from Dr. Robert Frey. Frey made the gift from the Frey Family Foundation as an honoree of the college at its annual gala celebration. Frey, his wife and daughter are all Suffolk County Community College graduates. Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay accepted the check, along with Sylvia A. Diaz, Ph.D., LMSW, executive director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation.“Robert Frey, a class of ’78 graduate and advocate for our institution, recognizes the transformative value of his contribution and the impact it will have on the lives of

our students,” said Dr. McKay. “We cannot thank him enough for his generosity. Dr. Frey’s gift is the most generous support received from an alumnus in the 58 year history of the college. We are delighted that Dr. Frey and his family view the community college as a bridge to opportunity. This transformational gift advances a place where lives are changed, careers are launched, promises are kept and dreams are realized.” Dr. McKay was the keynote speaker at last year’s WRCBAA conference.

Santa Ana College Names Former Academic VP as New President

Santa Ana College has selected Linda Rose, who served as vice president of academic affairs at Santa Ana College from 2011 to 2014, as the college’s new president. Chancellor Raul Rodriguez of the Rancho Santiago Community College District states, “With 23 years of leadership in higher education, Rose has a proven ability to connect with faculty, staff, administrators and surrounding communities to advance the colleges she has served.” Rose, who was elected from a pool of 45 candidates, has served as the president of Los Angeles Southwest College since 2014. “I was pleased, I was surprised. I think it was partially my experience”, says Rose.

As Santa Ana College’s chief instructional officer, Rose supported programs with credits that can transfer to institutions like Cal State Fullerton. She also helped lead campus-wide bond-funded facilities construction, which she said will be a focus during her tenure as president. She said she will also place an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math education. Rose began college in her late 30s, at Los Angeles Southwest College, where she went on to operate its budget and plan new bond-funded facilities. Prior to earning degrees including a doctorate in education from UCLA, Rose was an administrative assistant for a corporation involved in aerospace, automotive and credit reporting. She earned her master’s degree in English and started teaching part-time, continuing for more than 20 years.

RETIREMENTS

Maricopa Community CollegeDistrict Chancellor Rufus Glasper Retires

After nearly 13 years as chancellor of the Maricopa Community Colleges, Rufus Glasper, Ph.D. will retire to accept a position as President and CEO of the League for Innovation in the Community College (League). Dr. Glasper has served The Maricopa Community Colleges, one of the nation’s largest community college systems, for more than 29 years in a variety of roles from director of finance, CFO and Vice Chancellor. He was named Chancellor in 2003. The League, based in Chandler, Ariz., is an international nonprofit organization that provides strategic insights and undertakes policy work for the more than 800 institutions holding memberships in its League Alliance. The Maricopa Community Colleges is a member of the League.

Dr. Glasper earned his Doctorate of Philosophy degree in higher education finance from the University of Arizona, a Master’s and advanced degrees in school business

administration from Northern Illinois University, and a Bachelor’s degree in business administration from Luther College (Decorah, Iowa). In 2005, he was the recipient of an honorary doctorate in political science from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix and in 2013, he was the recipient of an nonorary doctorate in naturopathic medicine from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. In 2014, Dr. Glasper was the recipient of an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Northern Arizona University

Dr. Helen Benjamin Retires as Chancellor of the Contra Costa Community College District

Dr. Helen Benjamin, chancellor of the Contra Costa Community College District since 2005, will retire at the end of the year. Benjamin, a 25-year-plus veteran of the District said it’s time to make other long-range plans but that she expects to get a lot done in her final year. “I’m not done just yet; for the rest of the year, I’ll be rocking and rolling as I always have been,” said Benjamin.

Benjamin, a native of Alexandria, Louisiana, joined the District in 1990 as Los Medanos College’s Dean of Language Arts and Humanistic Studies and Related Occupations. She later held several other positions within the District, becoming its chancellor in 2005. Board members said Benjamin has left her mark on many aspects of the district’s three main campuses: Diablo Valley College, Los Medanos College and Contra Costa College. She had been president at Contra Costa College

when she rose to the chancellor’s spot.

Among the virtues they cited are Benjamin’s leadership, even-keeled demeanor, exacting standards and passion to make all three campuses (and District staff offices) more culturally diverse, both in terms of students and of faculty and staff. Benjamin has dealt with District crises, including the 2006-07 cash-for-grades scandal that resulted in criminal charges for almost 50 students and district staffers, as well as recurring dips in state funding. Benjamin ushered in the opening of a new campus in San Ramon, watched over the drive for a new campus in Brentwood and oversaw expansion of District teaching staff during her final year. The District is benefiting from $736 million in bond measures voter-approved in 2006 and 2014, and under her leadership has paid for major improvements at the Los Medanos and Diablo Valley campuses, and similar work at Contra Costa College has started.
