Spring 2013 Western Urology News A Tribute to Dr. W. P. Hayman The Western Urology family was saddened by the passing of our dear friend, mentor and colleague, Dr. Phil Hayman, on December 15, 2012. Phil Hayman was born and raised in London, Ontario. He completed Medical School at Western and then Urology residency training in London and in Toronto. Following residency he undertook fellowship training at Bowman Gray in North Carolina and at Stanford University in California. He then joined the Faculty of the Department of Sur- gery in the Division of Urology in 1973 and teamed up with Jack Wyatt in office space that they shared on Waterloo St. Within a short period of time, Phil amassed a very large general urology practice and became one of the surgical pioneers in the early days of renal transplantation in Lon- don. He was universally loved by his patients, who related to his easy- going manner and exceptional care. Throughout his career, Phil became regarded as an ex- cellent clinical teacher and a generation of urology train- ees came to admire him for his teaching methods and clinical acumen. In particular, his former trainees are in- debted to Phil for his patience and the confidence he in- stilled in us as we honed our operative skills. He had an uncanny ability to know just how much operative inde- pendence a resident could handle and when to step in. As devoted as Phil was to his patients, that same sense of responsibility was also directed toward the betterment of our community. He was actively engaged in a number of charitable organizations and held leadership positions with the Boys and Girls Club of London and the Parkwood and SJHC Hospital Foundations. Phil was well known for his love of life outside the hospital and had varied interests including travel, fine food and wine, music, theatre, opera, skiing and golf. Many of his colleagues and friends lived vicariously through his active social calendar, and he taught us the importance of work-life balance. Phil’s kindness, gentle demeanor and zest for life will be missed by many; however , we should take solace in the fact he fulfilled a dream we all aspire to and that is: “a life well lived and full of meaning”. Creating the new St. Joseph’s Hospital

The southwest building at the corner of Richmond and Grosvenor streets has been taken down in order to build a 65,000 sq/ft addition that will meet building code standards and improve the hospital’s ener-gy efficiency. The new Zone A will be brighter and barrier-free, and will feature a new main entrance to the hospital with a drop off circle. The new building will have improved layout for patient and visitor wayfind-ing and direct access to care areas. There will be a retail pharmacy on the main floor and an outdoor gar-den, built from the original Zone A foundation walls, for peaceful con-templation.

Programs and services that have moved into newly renovated facilities are enjoying state of the art space. These new facilities set the foundation for

coordinated and integrated care, which improves patient experience, builds knowledge sharing amongst services, and supports collaboration with in-ternal and external partners. The new Zone A is set to be complete by early 2015. Link to photo/video gallery on St. Joseph’s public website http://www.sjhc.london.on.ca/stjosephsconstructionphotos

As a result of the kindness of the Findlay family of London, the Urology Clinic walls at St. Joseph’s Hospital were recently treated to a beautiful make-over! Twenty Bateman prints all signed by the artist himself, were donated to the clinic by Duncan and Marjorie Findlay. Patients and staff have been de-lighted with the new, more attractive look of the clinic.

We wish to thank Mr. and Mrs. Findlay for this generous and unique gift!

The Annual UWO Uro-Oncology Fall Review was held at a new venue, Cranberry Resort in Col-lingwood, in October 2012, with the world-renowned Dr. Inderbir Gill from the University of South-ern California as the keynote speaker. Other guest speakers included Dr. Sebatien Hotte from McMaster University and Dr.

Theo van der kwast from the University of Toronto. Dr. Gill showed why he is the world-leader in mini-mally invasive surgery, both robotic and laparo-scopic, by presenting his most impressive experi-ence with complex robotic partial nephrectomy as well as the USC experience radial cystectomy and intra-corporeal urinary diversion. Dr. van der Kwast provided an excellent update on prostate cancer from the Uro-pathologist’s perspective: on the Euro-pean Screening Study and on definitions of

“insignificant cancer”. Dr. Hotte gave thorough re-views on oncologic man-agement of advanced renal cell cancer on cas-trate resistance prostate cancer. Drs. Kylea Pot-vin and Nick Power faced off in a heated debate on management of T2 bladder cancer. There was no clear winner in the debate and the two combatants are keenly awaiting a rematch next year. The ever-popular case discussions were, once again, very well re-ceived, engaging all participants.

2013

The next Fall Review will be held at yet another new venue, The Old Mill Inn in Toronto. Dr. Peter Carroll from the University of California in San Francisco will be the featured guest speaker with additional speakers to follow. See you then!

The Division of Urology at Western University has many strengths and unique qual-ities that distinguish it from other programs in Canada. Perhaps our greatest strength isn't our surgical volumes or access to evolving technology, but is the qual-ity of the individuals who are Western Urology. People, like Jack Wyatt, Phil Hay-man, Jack Sales and countless others created an atmosphere of collegial coopera-tive work and respect, which filtered down from staff to residents and enveloped the entire program. All of this continues to define our group today. Dr. Razvi asked me to provide the Newsletter with a brief bio of an unsung hero among us - a physician and researcher who we all have worked with but probably don't know well.

Dr. Ling DeYoung has been the cornerstone of Andrology research at Western and will celebrate her 15th year with us this sum-mer. Ling joined our division in 1998 and has taught microsurgical techniques and research methods to dozens of residents over the past decade and a half. She has more than 50 abstracts/presentations to her credit and nearly 25 peer reviewed publications. She grew up in a small city beside the Yangzi River above the Three Gorges River in Sichan Province, China which is under water now because of the Three Gorges Dam. After high school, she worked for a Geology company for three years before going to uni-versity (as required by the communist party during the cultural revolution where you could either be a farmer or a worker).

She graduated from Tong Ji Medical University in Wuhan China in 1983 with her MD degree and worked for 5 years in CuangXi Maternal and Children's Hos-pital in Pediatrics. In November 1989 Ling came to Canada, initially working in Hamilton at McMaster University, in post-graduate training in clinical epidemiolo-gy. She received her Masters of Medical Science in 1992 (Hemostasis and thrombosis) from McMaster and in 1993 moved to London where she worked at the Lawson Research Institute prior to joining our division. Over her time with us Ling has developed into an excellent surgical teacher and researcher. She has expanded her clinical research activities and now spends half her time in the lab working on animal models and half managing clinical tri-als. She is an incredibly hard worker, great colleague and friend.

New Miriam Burnett Chair in Urological Sciences Dr. Jeremy Burton has always been passionate about the field of human microbial ecology and probiotics. He started in this area as a Masterate and PhD student in the Department of Microbiol-ogy and Immunology at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. His PhD thesis was also in part undertaken at the Nestle Research Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland. As a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Lawson Health Research Institute and the Department of Microbiology and Immunol-ogy at the University of Western Ontario in the early 2000’s, he was focused upon investigating the urogenital microbiota with then-emerging non-culture-based techniques. These studies were the first to show that difficult-to-culture organisms, were in fact the frequent inhabitants of woman but rarely detected by bacteriological culture-based methods. He returned to New Zealand to work for a publically listed biotechnology company, where he had various roles, including Senior Scientist and Business Development Manager. He was heavily involved in the commercialization of intellectual property in the area of novel antimicrobial mole-cules and probiotic bacteria. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and holds several patents. He has been recognized with various awards for research and other activities during his career. In 2007 he was named a fellow of St. Margaret's College, one of New Zealand's most prestigious residential colleges in recognition of his assistance to its residents. In 2011 he returned to the Probiotics Research and Development group at Lawson as its Deputy Director to follow his passion of trans-lational research in probiotics. The Burnett Chair was established through the St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation, with a major philanthropic gift from the West-ern Foundation. As the holder of the Miriam Burnett Chair in Urological Sciences, Dr. Burton will focus on expanding translational research activities in microbiology, oncology and biomaterials development.

Spring 2013

Spring is in the air and the birds have begun to sing, the days are longer and the sun-shine is actually melting some snow! After 20 years in practice, I know these are the signs that residents are nearing the end of their training. We have enjoyed our 4 chiefs this year, who continue to demonstrate leadership skills and mentoring for the juniors. Our resident cohort numbering 16 in total has shown themselves to be highly engaged, social and very hard working. I will outline just a few of this year’s highlights in this very academically packed year:

The division of urology was granted full accreditation by the Royal College in January this year. Thanks to all the hard work of the faculty and staff, but a spe-cial nod should go to Kim Nitz who prepared the entire package (many hundreds of pages) in a highly organized fashion. Thanks Kim! We have had a couple of OSCE exams for our trainees, a very large undertaking but greatly appreciated by the residents and one which re-lies on the generous support from our industry partners. Many thanks to our sponsors! The Lap course, spear-headed by Dr. Sener and Dr. Paulter was a huge success, an activity that we'll plan on repeating next year if possible.

Many thanks to J&J Ethicon for their help with this course. We had our first ever Most Valuable Resident Award (by resident vote) which was presented to Shawna Boyle at the Urology Christmas Party - congrats Shawna! Our 4 chiefs are all well on their way with career plans. Shawna Boyle is in the final stages of planning for an Endourology career in academic medicine with a Fellowship in Florida. Dan Yanko is looking at Western Canada and BC in a com-munity Urology position but will first do an Incontinence Fellowship year in Cal-gary. Paul Martin is all set to start sending us his difficult patients once he starts practice in Sarnia and Francisco Garcia will remain with us as a fellow in Androl-ogy with a career goal of finding an academic posting. As 2012-2013 comes to an end, we are looking forward to having our new group of residents join us and we will watch as our current PGY-4's develop their skills and evolve into chiefs. On a personal note, I want to thank all of the incredible support our program re-ceives from all staff and faculty to do these many activities which really define our program.

Congratulations to Kim- Chi Tran and husband Ryan who are expecting their first little bundle of joy in August!

Jeff Campbell and Jillian MacDonald announce their engagement. The wedding will take place in June 2014. Best wishes!

We welcome…. The Division of Urology is excited to have three new urology residents join our group – Dr. Garson Chan from the Univer-sity of Saskatchewan, Dr. Melissa Huynh from Western Uni-versity and Dr. David Mikhail also from Western. As has been the case for several years now, we were able to match with very strong candidates who were very close to the top of our ranking order. We hope to integrate them into our pro-gram even before they complete their first two years in gen-eral surgery.

Dr. Garson Chan Dr. Melissa Huynh Dr. David Mikhail

Spring 2013

Goodbye and Best Wishes! I am ready to be done my exam! I am looking forward to moving my family to Sarnia, to start a practice, to buying a boat, and to hitting the links. I would like to thank past, present and future co-residents, staff, and support staff for all of their help along the way! I had a great 5 years in London but my golf game took a serious hit. Should be ok....Should be ok….

Page 8

How these past 5 years have flown by so quickly, I’ll never know. Fortunately along the way I’ve been able to work with, learn from and enjoy the com-pany of many fantastic people. I would like to thank the con-sultants, nurses, ad-ministrative staff and my co-residents for all of their help, pa-tience and guidance.

I look forward to keeping in-touch with all of you. This July, I will be starting a reconstruc-tive and functional urology fellowship at the University of Calgary. Once the “quiz” is done in May the next step will be to track down an Alberta appropriate wardrobe...does Hugo Boss make a cowboy hat?

I am looking for-ward to staying in London to train un-der Dr. Brock as an andrology & infertility fellow for one year. I am ea-

gerly looking forward to this fellowship, as well as any future training or job prospects that may open up as a result of the fellowship itself. I am also very much looking for-ward to spending some more time in the laboratory pursu ing re-

search, and of course, spending more time with my beautiful wife and daughters.

Coming to join the urology program in London was an amazing opportunity. I

have spent 5 years training and learning from some of the finest people I have

encountered in medicine. The journey was about learning to be a urologist but

along the way they have taught me a lot about being a professional, a teacher,

and about life. You think that residency is where you go to learn the

knowledge and skills but looking back it was so much more.

I have so many things to be thankful for and being in Lon-

don for these 5 years ranks high among these. It is be-

cause of my excellent training here that I am heading to a 2

year academic fellowship in Miami with Dr. Leveillee in laparoscopic and endo-

scopic surgery with hopes to return to Canada once that is completed.

Endourology:

Dr. Andrew Fuller (2010-2012): Since completing my Endourology fellow-ship and returning to Ade-laide, South Australia in June last year, I have es-tablished a busy combined public and private Urology practice. I am enjoying the opportunity to apply the

skills I acquired during the fellowship in robotic and complex stone surgery. I really miss the hockey, Tim Hortons, all the staff at St Joe’s and the snow! My wife, Karyn, and I are expecting a sister for Lauren in mid March. *Update: Elise Juliette Fuller, 3.5 kg, ar-rived on March 18, 2013

Andrology:

Dr. Joe Lee (2012-2013): My Andrology fellowship at St. Joseph’s Hospital has been very rewarding. Under the mentorship of Professor Brock, I have had many opportuni-ties to further my understanding of this field. Besides the operative experience, which was invaluable, I also gained greater insight into how a full-fledged Androlo-gy service should be set up and run effectively. When I return to Singapore in August 2013, I will use what I have learned to enhance my Andrology service at the National University Hospital. The three key areas of my focus will be Male Sexual Dysfunction, Male Infer-tility and Male Prosthetic Surgery. I would like to ex-press my sincere thanks to all of the consultants, espe-cially Dr. Brock, who has been generous in imparting his knowledge. I would also like to thank the residents, clinic staff and administrative staff for their roles in making my fellowship a truly meaningful one. Special thanks to Ling, Kim, Susan and Lesley for helping me settle in when I first arrived. Best regards, Joe

Uro-Oncology:

Dr. Ali Alzahrani (2010-2011): Upon finishing my fellowship in London, I returned to Saudi Arabia. I got a job at Dammam University as a staff urologist (Assistant Professor) and my main work load is Uro-Oncology. In addition, I am the Urology Residency

Program Director in the university. Recently I was appoint-ed as Chairman of the De-partment. It is huge responsi-bility and I am looking forward to keeping and improving the level of collaboration at re-search and education level between our departments.

Dr. Adel Alammari (2009-2011): Thanks for remem-bering me! It was good days that I am missing. I am the

Section Head of Urology in King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Cen-tre. The fine skills that I got from work-ing with Dr. Denstedt and Dr Razvi made me confident in dealing with the most difficult cases of Endourology, and I am still doing the laparoscopic cases with ease after training with Dr. Pautler. I am in the process of joining King Fai-sal University and Medical School as an

Assistant Professor. I have all the gadgets for Endourolo-gy (I am just making the exact copy of Drs. Denstedt and Razvi ORs). I send my regards to all of the Urology de-partment staff. Special thanks to Dr. Dentedt, Dr. Razvi and Dr Pautler. Best wishes.

Transplantation and Kidney Surgery: Dr. Neal Rowe: Originally from the East Coast, I com-pleted my Bachelor of Science and undergraduate medi-cal studies at Memorial University. From there, I pursued a residency in urologic surgery at the University of Ottawa. It was during my time in Ottawa that I developed an interest in kidney transplantation and minimally invasive kidney surgery. In my spare time, I like to travel, hike, and gener-ally enjoy the outdoors. And of course I never turn down an opportunity to vacation near the ocean! Since coming to London, I have been busy learning (everything that I can) from Dr. Sener and Dr. Luke. I am currently approaching the midway point of my two-year fellowship in transplantation and kidney surgery. Over the next year my training focus will change from primarily clinical toward more laboratory and translation-al research. Following completion of my training here at Western, I aim to se-cure an academic position that will ena-ble me to be have a role in the educa-tion of the next generation of urologists.

Petar Erdeljan: Since leaving London I started independ-

ent practice at The Scarborough Hospital, in Toronto. Quite busy as I have over 5 thousand patients in my practice. I do mostly endourology and oncology, although I see general urology problems too. On a personal note, we now have a cute 3 month old baby boy at home.

I am proud and grateful of the seven years I spent in London as part of UWO urology team. I am grateful to those I learned from, not only professors of the art of urology, but the residents, nurs-es, secretaries and, above all, the Canadian patients. We run the most famous and the busiest Endourology service in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and some of the neighboring Arabian gulf states. I am currently a consultant urolo-gist at Saud University Medical City. We run The King Saud University Endourolo-gy Fellowship which is a 2 year program that I was appointed to be the program director in 2008. I am currently an Assis-tant Professor of Surgery am currently the Chief of the Endourology Section of the Saudi Urology Association (appointed March 2009). I am privileged and glad to be serving both the higher education and health care movement in Saudi Arabia. Thank you Western Ontario and Canada

Mohammad Alomar

Hi everyone!

Things have been busy here in Saskatoon. Effie and I had our son Seth in April 2012 and we've been having tons of fun with him. He amazes us every day. We bought a house at the end of November and we are enjoy-ing the new space and slowly unpacking. I have a mixed practice here in Saskatoon, which keeps things challeng-ing. In addition, I've taken a leadership role in medical education and took over the urology education coordina-tor position and I'm almost half way done my Masters of Education and hope to be done by Spring 2014.

That's all for now…

Trustin Domes

Kirsten Foell In June, I will be completing a 2-year endourology and mini-mally-invasive surgery fellowship at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, working with Drs. Honey, Pace and Lee. I have learned a tremendous amount in the past year and a half, and have really enjoyed my time in Toronto. I re-cently accepted a position in Barrie, ON, at the Royal Victoria Hospital and will be joining Drs. Ray, Zadra, Iocca and Hartsburg after completing fellowship. After our recent wedding, my husband Paul and I are now very excited to find a home in Barrie, and I am looking forward to starting my practice that will in-clude a focus on endourol-ogy and laparoscopic sur-gery.

Jeff Spodek...After completing my residency in 2003 I

worked at Bluewater Health in Sarnia for 2 years. In 2005 I moved to Toronto, working at the Rouge Valley Health System - Centenary site in Scarborough, and was appointed as Division Head of Urology in May 2011. I am married to Jessica and have 3 wonderful boys. I continue to be an avid golfer and hockey player. When not at work, I can be found behind the bench coaching my sons' hockey teams.
