A Note from the DirectorA Note from the DirectorA Note from the DirectorA Note from the Director

Our work in Music Theatre Workshop is somewhat different this

semester than from the previous five years. We are trying our hand

this time around at a devised piece: a musical review that we create

together as a class. The students had the opportunity to choose songs

they love, and were encouraged especially to select songs they might

not otherwise have the chance to perform. We also urged students to

cover a range of musical time periods and styles, from traditional to

modern, some famous and some more obscure. In addition to select-

ing songs, students helped hone the theme of the piece. We started

with the idea of Broadway dreams and then moved to the idea of seiz-

ing the moment to reach those dreams: Seize the Day. The creative

process has been challenging in one sense for not having the pre-set

structure of script and songs already in place. Instead, we have the

more free-flowing, creative excitement of building the work from

scratch, from music to theme, dialogue to production, from story to

staging. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with this

group of bright and talented students. So sit back, enjoy the show,

and Seize the Day!
