we are delighted to welcome you to westlake boys high school.

westlake boys high school offers an outstanding learning environment for teenage boys on the north shore of auckland. we believe that by providing a range of opportunities for our students, inside and outside of the classroom, we will help them discover their passion and fulfill their potential.

our priority for all of our students is academic success. we have the same high academic expectations for all those that graduate from westlake whether they chose to

Many of our students go on to study at top universities in new Zealand and across the world. in the last five years, several students have been awarded top in new Zealand and top in the world recognition and university scholarships. our staff work hard to ensure that all our students leave westlake with a set of qualifications they are proud of.

our staff members are exceptionally committed to providing additional opportunities for our young men outside of the classroom. nearly all of our teachers contribute to our co-curricular programme, making westlake an exciting and supportive school to be part of. we regularly gain national honours in sport and music in addition to many other local and regional sporting and cultural achievements.

the decision to come to westlake was the most important and rewarding decision of my life. our school is filled with many opportunities and strong competition – perfect conditions for any boy to succeed. as well as a passionate and proud school culture, the diversity of activity is astounding. we are always encouraged to reach personal bests and the challenge to follow the ‘westlake way’. to have the courage to do the right things makes westlake a truly special place.

2009 nZQa outstanding scholarships

academic excellencepreparing for academic excellence: the Junior schoolin Forms 3 and 4, boys are rigorously prepared for the senior school. all boys take courses in english, Maths, science and the social sciences, as well as experiencing a range of technology and arts subjects (including Music). they follow a physical education course, and study a language of their choice. For those with an aptitude, two languages are offered. in doing this we have taken many aspects of the 2010 nZ curriculum and have integrated them to enhance our current programmes.

ncea and cambridge international examinationswe are proud to be able to offer westlake boys two pathways to academic success. all students have the opportunity to take a very wide range of courses in Forms 5, 6 and 7 leading to ncea qualifications. these are the new Zealand national qualifications, and performing well in them will allow access to universities in new Zealand or overseas.

if a boy is placed in the top 40% of our boys at the end of Form 4, he has the chance to follow, if he wishes, the cambridge pathway. cambridge international examinations are based in the uk – they are linked to the university of cambridge – and are taken by thousands of schools all over the world, as well as by many of the top schools in the uk and in nZ. they follow the british model of qualifications – igcse, as level and a level, taken in Forms 5, 6 and 7. performing well in these examinations will, as is the case with ncea, allow access to universities in new Zealand and overseas.

we call these options our ‘dual pathway’. every year, a number of our boys receive ‘top in the world’ or ‘top in new Zealand’ awards in the cambridge examinations, and we were delighted to see that many of our boys had their ncea qualifications endorsed with either ‘excellence’ or ‘Merit’ in 2007 and

2008, the first time these endorsements had been available. our overall pass rates are also exceptional in both ncea and cambridge examinations, evidence that our ‘dual pathway’ offers two clear routes to success.

scholarshipour boys have the opportunity to sit the new Zealand scholarship examinations in their last year at school. scholarships can be awarded in most subjects, and we encourage our boys to enter them. the awards offer the greatest challenge available to school students in new Zealand, and carry with them money to help finance their years in university. each year, a number of our top students are awarded ‘outstanding scholarships’. indeed, in 2008, two of our boys received 'premier scholar' awards, placing them in the 'top ten' performers nationwide. we are confident even more will do so in the future. this is testimony to our outstanding academic programmes and our ability to ensure our academicsachieve the best results possible.

academic instituteas part of our commitment to excellence, we have created an academic institute. the top stream of boys in both Form 3 and Form 4 experience a special programme of

accelerated learning in Maths, english, social sciences and science, concentrating on building the boys’ independent learning skills. the boys also focus on many of the skills they will need to perform at the highest levels when they sit scholarship at the end of their school career.

alternative programmesthese occur at ncea levels 1, 2 and 3 in english, Mathematics, science and physical education. the courses are designed for students who, after two or three years, have achieved at a level that would not allow them to gain entry into a full ncea level 1 or level 2 course. these courses are designed to enable students to progress at a pace that complements their learning ability and educational needs.

individual education programmesFor the boys with additional learning needs, highly qualified teacher aides work with classes and individual students at the student’s own pace, according to his particular needs. extra support in english and Mathematics is offered when appropriate. boys with little or no english are offered esol (english for speakers of other languages.)

gatewaywe offer gateway as an opportunity for students to gain first hand work experience in their chosen fields. interviews for the selection process will begin in term 3.

My teachers believe in me and have helped me achieve success both in the classroom and on the sports field. something that i find unique is the great relationship between students and teachers, who always encourage you to be “better than before”. i feel privileged to be at a school where sport and culture is considered just as important as academics. My time in the cricket sports institute has helped me to become a better player and i have been recognised by auckland cricket. i feel proud to be a part of westlake.

cultural success within the cultural environment of westlake, our boys are high achievers. within the cultural environment of westlake, our boys are high achievers.

during my time at westlake, i have seen culture grow far beyond expectation. we have shown that we are a dominant force in music, winning various regional and national competitions. the combined kapa haka group with westlake girls has also started to succeed in regional competitions. in addition, our inter house cultural activities, especially the haka competition is a spectacle displaying brotherhood and unity. there is no doubt that westlake culture will continue to succeed for many years to come.

at westlake boys our arts’ students are high achievers. westlake is a lively, thriving cultural school with visual arts, sculpture, music, design, photography, drama and debating being the third cog of a holistic education – equal to, and alongside academia and sport.

our musicians have a reputation for excellence. the combined music groups from westlake boys and girls’ high schools are consistent winners of the gold awards in all 4 categories of the kbb Music Festival, symphony orchestras, concert bands, big bands and chamber orchestras. in addition, in 2009, the symphony orchestra and the chamber orchestra each won the premier awards for the ‘Most outstanding performance’ in their categories. our male choir Voicemale, and Virtutti, the barbershop boys, are extremely popular wherever they sing. both Voicemale and choralation (our combined choir with wghs) were placed in the top 20 choirs in new Zealand, and choralation went on to win the top platinum award at the national Finals.

in the search for musical excellence and fun, the musicians commit to regular tours, camps and festivals. in 2008, 115 music students toured to the 19th australian international Music Festival in sydney where

they won two golds and the ‘premier performance of the Festival’. in 2009, the choirs travelled to dunedin, and in 2010, the bands will be touring new plymouth schools, and choralation will finish the year with a tour to england.

our drama department regularly delights the community with shows and musicals. the most recent being ‘the school of rock’ in 2009. the westlake kapa haka groups and debating teams are renowned and have considerable kudos in the school. culture is celebrated with musical items regularly in our assemblies and a huge ‘cultural week’ in term 2, where our diverse range of ethnic cultures work together to display their art, food, dance and history. at westlake boys, cultural ability and difference is accepted and respected.

MUSIC INSTITUTEall musicians have option courses covering performance, composition, aural, history and theory. working at more advanced levels of composition and performance, are the Music institute students who are auditioned at the start of each year. the aim of the institute is to create innovative personalised programmes to develop the most talented students to their full potential.

when i think of westlake, i think of achievement, passion and opportunities. it is these values that have inspired me from the first moment i sat in the auditorium and they will stay with me for the rest of my life. westlake provides every boy with the ability to become successful, to feel brotherhood and to achieve at his best. i truly believe that no matter who you are, westlake extends your life skills and education to heights that few can match.

sporting excellenceWestlake Boys High School has built a fi ne traditi on of sports achievement at regional, nati onal and internati onal levels. Our teams compete in all Auckland and North Harbour inter-secondary school competi ti ons, leading to regional, nati onal and internati onal championships.

The parti cipati on of teaching staff and talented parents, many of them highly qualifi ed coaches, ensures that all teams and acti viti es are well organised, supervised and successful.

All boys are encouraged to parti cipate in at least one summer and one winter team sport each year. Boys are expected to be committ ed to their school teams, and their loyalty to westlake boys high school is highly valued.

sport is a key part of the westlake experience as it helps develop character and encourages lifelong healthy living. The more a boy parti cipates in sport, the greater the benefi t from his ti me at the school.

Traditi onal sporti ng exchanges with Tauranga Boys High School, Christchurch Boys high school and hamilton boys high school are all crucial in our drive to extend our students to achieve at the very highest level.

In keeping with the commitment to excellence, Westlake teams conti nue to travel abroad and play against the best overseas teams. cricket, rugby, hockey and Athleti cs have all travelled overseas in the last two years. Plans are well underway for tours in the next two years.

We have over 30 diff erent sports in which students can represent the school. Our major traditi onal codes all have a Teacher in Charge to oversee that sport. We also have a full ti me Director of Sport who ensures the smooth running of all sports at the school.

national titles have been won in numerous sports including basketball,

badminton, cross country, Football, hockey, rowing, squash, sailing and water polo. at regional level westlake has been the dominant school in auckland secondary schools cricket, basketball and hockey in the last three years.

in addition, there have been a number of individuals who have represented nZ at age group levels in the following sports recently: Fraser wickes (athletics), robert loe (basketball), craig cachopa (cricket), henry tam (badminton), Joseph bartholomew (hockey), chris smith (rugby), taylor gunman (cycling), tommy smith (Football), chris steele (sailing), adrian Franklin (water polo), dan davies (tennis) and Jordan stanley (rowing). this year five westlake boys high school rowers were selected for nZ to compete in the world Junior championships.

we are also extremely proud of our old boys who have gained full representative honours for new Zealand, for example, tom ashley (board sailing), dean barker (sailing), Mike stanley (rowing), Frano botica (rugby), glenn snyders (swimming), robert ironside (Football), steven edwards (hockey), Justin Vaughan (cricket), Josh england (cycling)and kirk penney (basketball) to name but a few.

the gifted and talented sport and physical education programme - the sports institute

to support our students in achieving their academic and

sporting goals, westlake has developed through its sports institute a gifted and talented programme. students at Form 3 and Form 4 level in this programme are exposed to high quality coaching and rigorous physical and academic standards. the purpose of the sports institute is to achieve high performance from elite sportsmen within their specialised sport.

the sports institute offers talented young sportsmen quality coaching in five sports: basketball, cricket, hockey, Football and rugby. all students within this programme must maintain excellent academic and attendance levels. the director of sport monitors closely all students’ academic records, where boys are expected to maintain excellent effort grades to remain in the sports institute programme. students are expected to represent westlake boys high school in their chosen sport while enrolled at the school.

westlake boys' high school encourages those intermediate students (both in and out of zone) who wish to excel in their chosen sport to apply for our gifted and talented sports institute programme. please note that any out of zone student is subject to ballot procedures.

deputy head boy and sports captainnathan davenport the westlake sports programme is definitely one of the leading programmes in new Zealand schools. there is a very wide range of sports accommodating any boy who has an interest in sport. at westlake, we have a very dedicated team of staff members who coach and manage our sports teams. through my chosen sports, rowing and rugby, i have had the opportunity to compete at a local, regional, national and international level. i am grateful to westlake for providing me with these opportunities and by also helping me to maintain my studies whilst competing for the school.

Shorts and JerseySchool Jacket

school uniformall students should dress in the uniform as pictured. all items, except footwear, are to be purchased from the school uniform shop located in the student services centre.

boys' shoes must be black, polished leather, lace-up school or business style shoes or dark brown or black leather sandals with a heel strap (pictures available on the website). shirts are to be tucked in; socks are to be pulled up; heel straps in place.

please note: t shirts are not to be worn under school uniform. Jandals are forbidden, as are jewellery and jeans.

when an emergency situation arises concerning a

student's uniform, written requests for temporary wearing of non-regulation items must be referred to the appropriate dean or deputy headmaster.

pe uniform: the requirements are green shorts and a white polo shirt embroidered with the school emblem (as shown below).

Jackets: green school jackets or red premier jackets only.students are allowed to wear a raincoat to and from school on wet days.

the guidance counsellors, careers adviser and deans believe it is important for boys to achieve to their full potential and will take time to see any boy or parent who requires counselling or guidance.

all boys are given assistance to cope with personal and family issues. counsellors liaise with community agencies when the need arises for more specialised help.

westlake boys high school insists that all students take pride in their school, actively demonstrating commitment to our ethos.

when parents enrol a student at westlake boys high school, they undertake to see that their son abides by all the school rules as set down by the board of trustees. these are intended to promote students’ welfare and to assist in the smooth running of the school.

school discipline applies to all students of the school from the time of leaving home in the morning until they have returned home in the afternoon. this includes school-authorised events.

a comprehensive list of school rules is provided in the student diary issued to every student at the start of the year or during late enrolments throughout the year as well as on the school website. students are expected to read and comply with all school rules and our parental community is expected to support us in this.

the following are drawn to the attention of parents as areas where co-operation is particularly sought.

• Students are expected to act in an orderly, courteous manner and to show consideration towards other people.

• Students are to be dressed in the school uniform as set out in the prospectus.

• Boys are to be clean shaven, and excesses of current fashion in relation to hair styles are not acceptable. hair is not to be dyed. hair is to be off the collar, off the face and above the eyebrows.

• The possession or use of cigarettes, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and other illegal substances or material as per school policy is strictly prohibited. the school has a zero tolerance to use and/or possession of the above substances.

cellphones distract from teaching and learning and are not permitted at school. i-pods and Mp3 players are not permitted either.

house systemin 2008, the school launched a new house system, allocating a house to every student in the school.the six houses are hood (named after John hood, old boy and Vice-chancellor of oxford university), Murchison (named after peter Murchison, recently

retired and long serving deputy headmaster), smale (named after bill smale, local entrepreneur and old boy), stanley (named after Mike stanley, old boy and former world rowing champion), ururoto (meaning westlake in Maori) and pupuke (the lake which lies to our east).the houses compete in a wide variety of events including athletics, swimming, cross country, singing, charity collections, academic performance and kapa haka.the house system generates pride and passion for westlake and a sense of ownership for boys who attend westlake. the house system also contributes to the promotion of competition among the students.

when a boy arrives at westlake, he is placed in a vertical form class. he will stay in this form class, with boys from his and every other year in the school, for the whole of his time at westlake. all boys in that form class belong to the same house, with older boys able to help younger
