DesignLAb premieres on Tuesday, March 19 from 5:00 - 8:30 PM for theopening of fourteen new exhibits on the 2nd floor of the Blue Building.

On view in the Blue Lobby are works from the 1970‘s by Ronald Bladen(1918-1988). Despite a prolific career that spanned nearly threedecades, Ronald Bladen’s sculpture remains highly enigmatic. Bladen is known among art critics as one of the founders of Minimalism:Bladen’s X (Monumental), 1967 was the most prominent work on viewin “Scale as Content,” at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1967, one yearafter his work titled, Three Elements (1966) debuted at the Jewish Museum’s seminal exhibition on Minimalism titled, “Primary Structures.”Bladen began his career as a painter in the late 1950s and focused onextending the heavily tactile surface into three-dimensional space. Unlike the younger generation of Minimalists, his work was not basedon academic training but, rather on his own experiments that investigated the relationship between shape and structure. From theoutset Bladen echoed the evolution of Beat culture as he embarked on a quest to render new forms.

MOCA Pacific Design Center presents graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister who blends typography and imagery in striking, imaginative, ambitious, and often unsettling ways. Best known for hisalbum covers for Talking Heads, Lou Reed, OK Go, and the RollingStones as well as for innovative corporate advertising campaigns forcompanies including Levis, Sagmeister has also made films, books, furniture, sculpture, and interactive installations as part of his designpractice.

Stefan Sagmeister The Happy Show is centered on Sagmeister’s ten-year personal exploration of happiness and presents his typo-graphic investigations of a series of maxims culled from his diary. These maxims are rendered in a variety of imaginative and interactiveforms and contextualized by social data that Sagmeister has gatheredfrom psychologists, anthropologists, and historians to elucidate the effects of age, gender, race, money, and other factors on personal happiness. An excerpt from Sagmeister’s Happy Film, a feature-lengthexploration of whether it is possible to train the mind the way we trainthe body, is also on view.

Stefan Sagmeister The Happy Show is organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania. The exhibition is curated by Claudia Gould, the Helen Goldsmith Menschel Director, The Jewish Museum, New York.
