LA VÍA VERDE DE WESTWOOD | WESTWOOD VIA VERDEEXISTING CONDITIONS

Existing right-of-way (ROW) conditions in the Westwood area vary, creating challenges in providing comfortable and safe walking or cycling options for community members traveling from home, work, or other services through the neighborhood. Sidewalks are narrow and almost always a ttached to the roadway, and have limited or no adjacent treelawns and shade for users.

The above condition is typical for the Westwood neighborhood: the a ttached sidewalk is too narrow for two people to walk side-by-side safely. Additionally, a consistent tree canopy adjacent to the sidewalk is lacking, which would provide shade for pedestrians.

LA VÍA VERDE DE WESTWOOD | WESTWOOD VIA VERDEIDEAL CONFIGURATIONS

The “ideal” condition for a connected multi-modal circulation system through the neighborhood would provide widened sidewalks, adequate tree lawns with trees and Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI), adequate parallel parking along residential and collector streets, and either dedicated or shared use travel lanes that accomodate cars and bikes. Intersections would be built to have shorter pedestrian crossing distances, integrated GSI, and more visible crossings.

This “ideal” condition diagram shows shared use lanes, parallel parking, widened sidewalks and tree lawns.

This “ideal” condition diagram emphasizes integrated Green Stormwater Infrastructure and shorter pedestrian crossings.

FINAL VISION PLAN AND PRIORITY PROJECTS | December, 2018

LA VÍA VERDE DE WESTWOOD | WESTWOOD VIA VERDEPRIORITY PROJECTS

Upon completion of the overall vision for the entire Via Verde Route, several priority projects were identi fied in order to provide guidance for shorter-term implementation of projects by partnerships with the City, non-pro fit organizations, and community-led groups with the intent to provide continued progress and excitement around the Via Verde. Priority projects were identifi ed using a variety of factors that consider the alignment of public and private resources, community goals, City planning goals, and a feasible time-frame. These initial priority projects intentionally address circulation and GSI opportunities in a focused area where the impacts of improvements could have a higher impact near schools (identi fied by the community as a high-priority for the safety of children).

LA VÍA VERDE DE WESTWOOD | WESTWOOD VIA VERDE¡PRÓXIMOS PASOS - ESTANCIA INVOLUCRADO! | NEXT STEPS: STAY INVOLVED!

NEXT STEPS FOR PRIORITY PROJECTS• TPL will carry way- finding plan forward• DPW will pursue funding for the mobility and green infrastructure projects• DPR park and tree elements (trees in the ROW)• Community-led enhancements -Westwood Unidos to lead alley beauti fication projects and help implement the Wayfi nding Plan -Groundwork will organize SWIC/Library landscape beautifi cation

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIESGrants• The Trust for Public Land has allocated 60K of their program funding from the Gates Family Foundation to implement projects related to the Via Verde in 2019. We will dedicate these funds to projects like way finding signs, artistic crosswalks, and tactical urbanism ideas such as painted route finding on streets. • The Trust for Public Land is also looking for additional dollars to complete a way finding plan that will help us work with the community on the look and feel of these elements. We anticipate this will include the development of a standard color pale tte, font, logo, and the design of signs.• Safe Routes to Parks ($12,500)-Application submi tted by Westwood Unidos.• Many grant possibilities for non-pro fits and the City to pursue

-Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) ° Grants for trails and parks improvements -The Colorado Health Foundation

City funding possibilities• Capital infrastructure program -Annual competitive funding source for projects from multiple departments within the City -Denver Public works and/or Denver Parks and Rec Annual Funds, maintenance programs -Future Denver Bond Program -Wastewater Enterprise Fund

Local/regional funding • DRCOG TIP funding -Serves as a short-range implementation tool to address the goals of the regional long-range transportation plan. Identi fies and prioritizes federally funded transportation projects recommended for implementation over a six-year period. -Support from Morrison Road BID’ - Assessment of fees on properties and businesses in defi ned areas which can be used on infrastructure and programming
