S.U.P.E.R Sunday! Most of us know today is Super Bowl Sunday. I’m sure some of you know

and are excited. Some of you know and are mildly interested and some of

you know and could not care less.

However, we really believe that every Sunday is S.U.P.E.R here at West-

wood. We really strive to include several “super” elements every time we

come together. Consider the following:

S – SAVIOR. Each Sunday (and every day) we celebrate our Savior, Jesus.

Matthew reminds us that Jesus was His name for he “shall save his people

from their sins” (Matthew 12:21). Now that is something worth celebrating!

U – UNITY. “How good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in

unity” the Psalmist reminds us in 133:1. We aren’t a perfect group but we

are thankful to be united in our faith and love for Christ. He certainly is the

one that “binds us together.”

P – PRAISE. It’s a “super” blessing to be able to praise God at any time in

life. It’s very special however, to come together as the church and sing

praises to our great God and His Son Jesus! “Therefore I will give thanks to

You among the nations, O LORD, And I will sing praises to Your

name” (Psalm 18:49).

E-EDIFY. Our time together every Sunday ought to be a super time of edifi-

cation. Just being in the assembly together to worship ought to serve as a

source of edification. But we are also to be encouraging in our attitudes and

actions and speech. “Therefore encourage one another and build one an-

other up…” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

R-REDEEMED. “In him we have redemption through his blood, the for-

giveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace” (Ephesians

1:7). When a person sins, he or she becomes a slave to sinning. ... Yet Jesus

paid the ransom for sinners with his life. We now are free from sin - re-

deemed to live freely in Christ. That fact alone should cause us to feel

“super” right now as we worship!

I hope your team wins tonight! But more importantly, be reminded that

because of Jesus we have already won! “But thanks be to God! He gives us

the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57).

Reflections

Have you noticed there are a lot of good things going on at Westwood? One is the Marriage Enrichment Class

taught by Richard. Many people have already signed up to take it. Stay tuned for news of an upcoming par-

enting class sponsored by our family life ministry.

I’m convinced that extremism on one side or the other produces a lot of harm. Seeking balance in the Chris-

tian life is a healthy goal. One of my favorite authors, Elton Trueblood, wrote, “No vital Christianity is possible

unless at least three aspects of it are developed. These three are the inner life of devotion, the outer life of service, and the intellectual

life of rationality.” The pursuit of these three aspects will help to produce the balanced Christian life.

Taking time to pray, study the Bible, and read devotional literature will help. Engaging in acts of service to others will help. Becoming

familiar with the great ideas of classic literature, including Christian Apologetics, will also help.

Our Lord said in Matthew 7 that if we ask, search, and knock, the door will be opened for us and we will be given what we need.

Essentials

Christian Music Challenge Richard has challenged our congregation to spend the entire month of February “resetting our minds” and listening to only Christian music. I believe this is an awesome challenge for our church family. Many times we fill ourselves with things like tv, pop music, or other messages from our culture and this challenge encourages us to instead fill ourselves with spiritual things. It really feels like the Spirit of God is at work at Westwood right now and I can’t wait to see what God has planned for us next!

Winterfest Remember that Winter-fest is just around the corner. It is less than 2 weeks away! I will be giving out a packing list and more information on our itinerary soon.

On the Lighter Side Veteran Report

My high school assignment was to ask a veteran about World War II. Since my father had served in the

Philippines during the war, I chose him. After a few basic ques-tions, I very gingerly asked, “Did you ever kill anyone?” Dad got quiet. Then, in a soft voice, he said, “Probably, I was the cook.”
