We would like to oer you a once-in-a-lietime opportunity. That is what we expect WEXPLORE China to be an unrivalled
learning experience, providing equal proportions o adventure, fun, an insight into international relations, language
studies, history and cultural interaction. Not to mention the personal skills that can be gained rom working with students
rom across the world and challenging yoursel in a new and unamiliar country.
New and unfamiliar defnitely describes China. The Worlds astest growing economy is sometimes so new that a 15 years
old picture is unrecognisable nowadays and last months road map may already be out o date! Contrastingly, another way to
describe China would be traditional. In one o the oldest civilisations you will catch glimpses o the past as well as experienc-
ing current practices that can be traced back thousands o years. This huge and diverse country cannot easily be defned, but
one word that every visitor would agree on would be fascinating. We want you to experience as many aspects o ascinating
China as possible, and this was our motivation or careully selecting the programmes in 2011.
Beijing - 8 days discovering one o the Worlds greatest cities
Shanghai and Xian - 6 days in the dynamic city o Shanghai, and Xian, the ancient capital o China
The Silk Road - a 12 day journey along the legendary trading route Hainan - 5 days in south Chinas tropical island paradise
WEMUNC 2011 - The 4th WE Model United Nations Conference, Beijing
The WEMUNC (WE Model United Nations Conerence) has matured over the past 4 years to become a truly international
conference. We are honoured to invite you to a Model UN which now brings over 2000 delegates rom around the world to
participate in 4 days o dynamic cross-cultural exchange, team work, diplomacy and debating. This conerence never ails to
build strong new riendships between its delegates and helps to nurture the global leaders o tomorrow.
We have designed the WEXPLORE study tours to be unique, providing experiences that you cannot normally get rom a visit
to China. An example o this is the WEXPLORE Field Research in Beijing where students will discover the city in teams andundertake their own research on a key contemporary topic. There are dozens more exciting and unique eatures that we have
included and we encourage you to read through this brochure to ully understand our excitement about the programmes we
are oering in 2011!
Finally, or us the most important thing about our programmes are the people who join, and what we are most excited about
is welcoming you to China next year. We hope to see you soon!
Dear students and teachers,
Sincerely,

Why China?
A Diferent World
China will challenge your world view. A
civilisation with over 5000 years o re-
corded history, a closed society or many
years, language and culture barely un-
derstood by outsiders - learning about
China is ascinating and exciting
The Richness o the Culture
China is a nation o 56 ethnic groups,
each o which have their own dress, mu-
sic, language, ood and way o lie!
Economic and Social
Development
Now is the time to visit China. The
country has brushed o the global re-
cession as i it was a small ea, and the
economy continues to boom. This is
a once-in-a-lietime opportunity to wit-
ness China changing right beore your
eyes. You will witness dramatic social
changes, the huge disparity between
urban and rural lie and between the up-
per and lower classes, the blooming o
entrepreneurship, art, music and leisure
activities as well as the destruction o
tradition to move orward at an astound-
ing pace. Witnessing this change is so
impressive that in the years to come you
will be continually telling stories about
when I was in China
Facts and FiguresQuoted rom McKinsey Global Institute
Over the next 20 years, Chinese cities will add more than 350 million
people ... the population o the entire United States
There will be more than 200 Chinese cities with more than a million
inhabitants ... in Europe today there are only 35 cities o that size
There will be up to 50,000 new skyscrapers ... the equivalent o build-
ing ten New York cities
There could be up to 170 new mass transit systems ... in Europe today
there are about 70
By 2025, two-thirds of Chinas citizens will live in cities ... thats nearly
1 billion people
Three weeks may not sufce to get to know the whole country but its enough to dive into an incredible culture and breathtaking
landscape. WEXPLORE China program gave us the possibility to be immersed in another way o lie and I will never orget about
the awesome time I had in China. From Michele Dappen, Kantonsschule Zug, Switzerland W EXPLORE CHINA 2010 Participant

I China is a country o contrasts, then Beijing is its perect microcosm. Traditional alleyways called Hutongs lie in stark
contrast with sprawling boulevards and highways, while ancient architecture sits next to giant postmodern creations.
One thing is certain, Beijing has a buzz - artists, writers, musicians, entrepreneurs and expats increasingly appear to live
alongside the traditions o a 2000 year old city. These multiple personalities in addition to stunning historical sites make
sure that Beijings visitors are intrigued, entertained and constantly in awe.

Shanghai: The Pulse Quickens
Shanghai is not like Beijing, in act, Chi-
nas largest megalopolis is not like any-
where. One commonly used adjective
o the atmosphere in Shanghai is pul-
sating. A city that, since the economic
reforms, gathered the collective energy
o its 20M+ residents to shake o every
speck o its colonial, imperial and com-
munist past, Shanghai has never looked
back even or a second because in this
city there isnt a second to lose. Sur-
rounded by old canal towns known as
the Venice(s) o China, Shanghai is an
island o commerce, fnance, trade and
an un-matched energy that gives a con-
stant eeling o opportunity to anyone
who lives there.
Xian*: The Ancient Capital
Chinas most historic city, Xian, was the
political centre or more than 12 dynas-
ties, and evidence can be ound through-
out the city, which could be called a liv-
ing history book. It is also the starting
point o the silk road, which led to the
inevitable consequence o having a mix-
ture o dierent cultures, religions and
ood. One o the greatest archaeological
fnds was also in Xian the incredible

WEXPLORE The Silk Road: The Meeting o CivilisationsThe very name o the legendary trade route connecting China with the West arouses the senses. It conjures visions o
camels winding through arid desert, burdened with the treasures o the Orient mixed with the riches o western civilisa-

bustling oasis towns, flled with strange travellers rom all over the continent and beyond. The importance o this linkbetween east and west, however, goes ar beyond legends, romanticism, and the trade o luxury goods. Over thousands
o years many dierent people, cultures and religions lived in harmony along the silk road, happily sharing their ood,
art, music and philosophy. The eects o this melting pot of culture and unique chapter in history can still be discovered
in China today.
