Weymouth bus travel

Exploring Weymouth by bus is a wonderful way to see the town. Hop on and off with a day return or weekly ticket and let someone else do the driving.

The main bus stops in the town are centred around the King George III Statue along Weymouth seafront.

There are regular services in and out of the town centre, withsome last buses running until midnight*. (* Please note - summerservice buses run until 2am to Portland and until 12.30am to Preston)

Many local buses have low floors which are easily accessible forwheelchair users and ‘buggy friendly’, meaning you can bringyour buggy on board without having to fold it up. With moreand more buses being adapted to be accessible, it’s never been easier to travel.

Local bus companies offer a variety of tickets with singles, day returns and weekly or monthly passes.

●1 Having the right change will save time.

●2 Signal for the bus to stop - As the busapproaches, check the route number anddestination displayed on the front. Raise yourarm as a signal for the bus to stop.

●3 When you want to get off -Simply press the bell once, as youapproach the stop, stay seated until the bus stops. If you areunsure where your bus stops, ask the driver for help.

Weymouth by bike

Cycling is a great way to explore the local area. There are many dedicated cycle ways, bridleways and trails to get around the town while avoiding traffic on the roads. Weymouth has 40km of cycle paths, most of it is traffic-free, making it one of the best in the South West.

Weymouth train station has 40 dedicated cycle-parking spacesand covered parking. The town centre also has more than 200 cycle-parking spaces so it’s never been a better time to use pedal power.

Attractions in DorsetThere’s so much to see in Dorset from fascinating museums andquaint local markets to the romantic ruins of Corfe Castle andfamily attractions.

For fun-packed days out with the kids, visit Monkey World, Sea Life Adventure Park or Farmer Palmer’s. They’ll also lovethe famous Swannery and Children’s Farm at Abbotsbury.

All kids love to run around on the sandy beaches at Swanageand Weymouth and splash in the clean, shallow waves. The beaches between Lyme Regis and Charmouth are the best for uncovering fossils.

For more ideas to entertain the whole family, go towww.visit-dorset.com

Attractions are listed alphabetically by area andare colour coded by type, see pages 14-18. Please note this list is not exhaustive and other attractions may be available.

Corfe

Corfe is overlooked by the outstanding ruins of its castle perched above the village on a hill in a gap in the chalk ridge.

The castle, built in 1086, was one of the country’s greatstrongholds and was strongly defended by the wife of its ownerduring the civil war. For her heroic efforts the parliamentariansallowed her to go free but destroyed the castle to stop it beingused in the future.

Corfe Common is found just on the edge of the village with the Purbeck Way walking route passing through it to reachChapman’s Pool and the South West Coast Path.

The X43 (summer service) bus travels direct to Corfe anddeparts from K5 at Weymouth’s King’s Statue, see page 62 for timetable. Or you can take the train to Wareham and hop on the number 40 bus to Corfe Castle. See pages 92-95 for the train timetable and alsopages 80-81 for the bus timetable.
