Mission Statement:The mission of the Wyoming Fly Casters is to promote and enhance the sport of fly fishing and the conservation of fish and their habitat.

Description:The Wyoming Fly Casters club was formed in 1974. The membership currently consists of approximately 160 members. The WFC was orga-nized by a group of dedicated fly fishermen and since the club’s inception the Wyoming Fly Casters have strived to further the sport of fly fishing through conservation and education.

Conservation of our water resources is one of our primary goals and in cooperation with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department we have and will continue to carry out worthwhile projects for the benefit of Wyoming fisheries. In addition to conserving Wyoming’s water resources we encour-age conserving the fish themselves. A fish safely released today will live to give sport to others.

The Backcast is the monthly newsletter of the Wyoming Fly Casters, an affiliate club of the Wyoming Council of Trout Unlimited, the Na-ture Conservancy and the Federation of Fly Fish-ers. Editorial content does not necessarily reflect the views of the officers, board or members of the Wyoming Fly Casters.

Annual dues are $20 for an individual, $30 for a family, or $250 for a lifetime individual membership or $450 for a life- time family mem-bership. Visit the club website at www.wyflycast-ers.org. To pay dues or contact the club, write to P.O. Box 2881, Casper, WY 82602.

The deadline for submission of information for each issue is a week before the end of the month. Make contributions to the next issue by e- mail-ing material to the Backcast editor at marketing-mavenaha@ gmail.com or call (708) 997-2071.

The Backcast is available either in electronic format or through USPS snail mail. To receive each newsletter through a monthly e-mail, you must be able to open .pdf (Adobe Acrobat, a software program available free of charge) docu-ments. Usually, each issue is roughly 1 MB in size, some are larger.

Your e-mail provider may have limits on the size of attachments.

In order to be added to the e-mail list, send a request to marketingmavenaha@ gmail.com. In addition to receiving each issue of the news-letter earlier than your hard copy peers, e-mail subscribers are able to print each copy in vibrant color -- an added plus if the issue is rich in color photographs.

By sub- scribing electronically, you also save the club roughly $17.40 a year in printing and post-age expenses.

President’s letterWell another month has past and we will soon be headed for fall. I know for me it is my favor-ite season. It is also the start of fantastic fishing season and hunting season. I was able to not only participate in the West Tensleep outing this month, but I also ventured up to the Yel-lowstone River in Columbus. It was a great trip of fishing and being with family. We were also able to head up a tributary, the Stillwater, and teach my sister and brother in law the awe-some sport of fly fishing. Along with teaching them we had our haphazards but you know it was just nice to be out in the Beartooth Wilder-ness. I don’t have much to say this month other than get out and fish.

It is also National Public Lands Day on September 21. There are quite a few members signed up to help out the Platte river Revival. We as a club should make it a mission to be well represented out there, afterall this is one of our favorite pastimes. If you can’t make it the Platte River, try to make a goal to clean up something over the month of September. It is our responsibility to teach our younger generations the meaning of conservation and responsi-bility. We are the future of these rivers and land that will be passed down to the next generations. So please take some time this month to reflect on what you can do. Till then tight lines and happy fishing!

Ten Sleep Outing 2013 The annual Ten Sleep Outing held this year over the first weekend of August was a great success. According to an unofficial count, there were 26 club members and family in attendance.

Once again, everyone in attendance was treated to the culinary delights of Matt Stanton and Theresa Briscoe. Both cooks out-did themselves this year. Matt provided us with breakfast both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Our meals included: pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, elk sausage, OJ, and of course coffee (plain & Irish). Not to be outdone, Theresa whipped up 8 gallons of her home-made gumbo for our enjoyment on Saturday night. Thinking there may be extra, a three bowl minimum was required. This proved unnecessary as there was not much left to distribute at the end. (Special recognition to Brandon for conquering 11 bowls that evening).

The fishing for small brookies was fantastic as always and the weather was beautiful. Anyone who has not come to the Ten Sleep outing should make an effort to put this on your calendar. We have a lot of fun and the small stream fishing is hard to beat.

Thank you to all who attended and especially to those who helped with the cooking and the cleanup. We hope to see you there next year.

Letter From the Editors

Lee and I are excited to issue our first issue of the Backcast for the Wyoming Flycasters! First of all, I want to say THANK YOU to Peg for doing such a wonderful job while she was the editor. A lot of work goes into every issue, and she really put her all into it. I will try my best to do the same, and hopefully my issues will look half as nice as Peg’s always did! I have only been a member of the club for a year now, and Lee has been a member since January. We have enjoyed being a part of such a great group of people. As new editor, and a newer member of the club, I would really appreciate any suggestions, articles, pictures, etc for future issues. This is a newsletter for the members of this club, produced by members of the club. Let’s have some fun with it!

FISHING AT SPEASThe pond at Speas is open and ready to fish! Joe and Derrick went out to the pond on Saturday, August 24th with Project Healing Waters and guests. The fishing was great, and everyone walked away with a fish or two. If you haven’t been out yet, you should take advantage of the great views and great fishing! Thank you to the Boy Scouts, Game and Fish, and the Wyoming Fly Casters volunteers for making this a great, accessible place for us all to fish.

BOARD MEETING August 21, 2013In Attendance: Kelly Kukes, Lee Tschetter, Matt Stanton, Cheryl Alexander, Lee Wilson, Derrick Dietz, George Axlund, Bob Fischer, Joe Meyer, Spencer Amend.Call to order: 7:02 p.m.New editors of the Backcast were discussed. Cheryl Alexander and Lee Wilson will take over the Backcast, starting with the September issue. The club will provide the software for creating the newsletter to Lee and Cheryl. Spencer made the motion to purchase the software. The motion was seconded by Derrick. All in favor. Spencer discussed the highway access project. Spencer would like to build a coalition/board to take on the project, and is looking for volunteers to help him. The project is roughly a year out from completion. If anyone would be willing to help Spencer with this project to get a new river access, please contact Spencer Amend. Review of Treasurer’s Report: Matt clarified that there was a double payment to AMBI for the August issue of the Backcast, so there will be a credit for September’s issue. Derrick has an opportunity to purchase TFO rod sets through Healing Waters for use by both Healing Waters and Fly Casters. The rods are 9’-0” – 9’-6”. Currently the club has around 10 rods for general use, some of which are slightly worn out. Spencer made a motion to purchase two rods through Healing Waters. Lee T. seconded the motion. All in favor. The Annual BBQ will be held September 11, which is also Patriot’s Day. Healing Waters members were also invited to the BBQ. Everyone should bring either a side dish or a dessert. The board decided to create a “mailing list” of e-mail addresses to aid in communication, especially during summer months when everyone has plans. Every month, the board will send out a reminder e-mail to check to make sure there will be enough members in attendance to hold a meeting. If there are not enough members to hold a meeting, any important business will be covered via e-mail or phone conversations. Lee made a motion to accept this new policy. Bob seconded the motion. One opposed, the rest in favor. Derrick will be writing a letter to Two-Fly for consideration to be a benefactor for the 2014 tournament. The Emergers project will be tabled for now. There were not enough people interested or willing to help with the project. For questions, contact Kelly. The Fly Casters are now a co-sponsor of a new Game and Fish program for Youth, along with the Wyoming Trout Unlimited, Walleye Unlimited, and 4-H. The program will offer certificates to adolescents who take part in outdoor activities such as fishing. No club participation or volunteers are required at this time. The club is looking into purchasing a simple laptop for the primary purpose of accounting, which Matt will hand over to the next Secretary. The laptop will also be used for general meetings and other club-related business. The next board meeting will be September 18, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.Meeting adjourned 8:11 p.m. CHERYL
