Mission Statement:The mission of the Wyoming Fly Casters is to promote and enhance the sport of fly fishing and the conservation of fish and their habitat.

Description:The Wyoming Fly Casters club was formed in 1974. The membership currently consists of approximately 160 members. The WFC was orga-nized by a group of dedicated fly fishermen and since the club’s inception the Wyoming Fly Casters have strived to further the sport of fly fishing through conservation and education.

Conservation of our water resources is one of our primary goals and in cooperation with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department we have and will continue to carry out worthwhile projects for the benefit of Wyoming fisheries. In addition to conserving Wyoming’s water resources we encour-age conserving the fish themselves. A fish safely released today will live to give sport to others.

The Backcast is the monthly newsletter of the Wyoming Fly Casters, an affiliate club of the Wyoming Council of Trout Unlimited, the Nature Conservancy and the Federation of Fly Fishers. Editorial content does not necessarily reflect the views of the officers, board or members of the Wyoming Fly Casters.

Annual dues are $20 for an individual, $30 for a family, or $250 for a lifetime individual membership or $450 for a life- time family membership. Visit the club website at www.wyflycasters.org. To pay dues or contact the club, write to P.O. Box 2881, Casper, WY 82602.

The deadline for submission of information for each issue is a week before the end of the month. Make contributions to the next issue by e-mailing material to the Backcast editor at cheryl_ea06@hotmail.com or call (307) 267-1903.

The Backcast is available either in electronic format or through USPS snail mail. To receive each newsletter through a monthly e-mail, you must be able to open .pdf (Adobe Acrobat, a software program available free of charge) documents. Usually, each issue is roughly 1 MB in size, some are larger.

Your e-mail provider may have limits on the size of attachments.

In order to be added to the e-mail list, send a request to cheryl_ea06@hotmail.com. In addition to receiving each issue of the newsletter earlier than your hard copy peers, e-mail subscribers are able to print each copy in vibrant color -- an added plus if the issue is rich in color photographs.

By sub- scribing electronically, you also save the club roughly $17.40 a year in printing and postage expenses.

President’s letterDear Flycasters,

Well this is my farewell letter as President of the Wyoming Flycasters Club. This year has been great. We were able to help in getting Speas Hatchery spruced up; we had some memorable outings to the Miracle Mile, and Ten Sleep. We have also been privileged to contribute to the Blue Downey Park Project to help preserve a natural brook trout hatchery. I look forward to being a part of the club, but as a member instead of leadership, as I have taken on other responsibilities.

This spring please keep in mind that we will be having our Cabin Fever Event March 15, at the Casper Recreation Center from 1-4. We are also having our Annual Banquet April 5, starting at 6:30 at the Ramada Inn. We look forward to your support in our conservation efforts.

Voting for our leadership will be taking place at our general meeting March 12. Please make sure your dues are paid in order to vote. Dues also help put on our BBQ dinners, Christmas dinner, and Cabin Fever clinic. Even if you don’t want to exercise your right to vote, please remember the dues go to more than just the club. They provide food and entertainment for our outings.

Last, but not least, I would like to say thank you for letting me represent the Wyoming Flycasters as your president. Thank you to the members and board for teaching me more about fly fishing and Casper.

Fried Fish PattiesWe all love to fish. That’s why you are reading this now. If you don’t love to fish, maybe someone close to you does. I haven’t always loved fishing, but I have always loved to cook... and to eat. When I was growing up, salmon patties was always a treat. Something that we had as a special treat. My mom would make them and let us help. My brother was a huge fan of the chalky little bones. A few issues back, I shared Joe’s canned trout recipe. If you tried, and wonder what to do with it, this is a great recipe for you! If you don’t have any canned trout on hand, try it with canned salmon. I am going to give you alternates as well, if you want them to be gluten free! (This recipe is loosely based on Nom Nom Paleo’s recipe, for credit sake)

What you need: 1-2 can(s) fish1/4 c. mayo1/4 yellow onion, chopped1-2 eggs*1/4 c. coconut flour or breadcrumbs*1 tsp paprika1/2 tsp dill

Salt and Pepper (to taste)1/4 tsp dried mustard1/4 tsp garlic powder2 Tbs butter, or coconut oil2 lemons

I should put a disclaimer here- my mama taught me how to cook. I rarely measure anything like spices, unless necessary. So quantities might vary. Start with one egg and add more if you think you need it. I only used one. Use the coconut flour to make these gluten free!

1. Get your fish ready. Remove the skin and bones, if you’d like. It doesn’t hurt to keep them in for extra nutrients.2. Combine egg (add one to start ,and add more at the end if you need to), onion, mayo, spices, and 1-2 Tbs of the

coconut flour or breadcrumbs. Mix well- get in there with your hands. That’s the best way to mix it up!3. Divide the mixture into 8 portions and form into patties. Put them in the refrigerator for about half an hour to firm

them up. You can cover a plate with parchment paper to make sure they don’t stick.4. Mix the remaining coconut flour/breadcrumbs with a little salt and pepper. Coat each patty with the flour/crumbs.

Heat up some butter or coconut oil in your pan over medium heat.5. Add the patties to the pan and cook for about 3-5 minutes on each side (a little more if you want them crispier).

Flip them over for another few minutes. The fish (whatever canned variety you use) is already cooked so just make sure they are heated all the way through.

6. Serve with rice, potatoes, cous cous (shown on the next page), or whatever you want! Slice a few lemons to squeeze over the patties.

Lyin’ & Tyin’If you want to learn how to tie flies, or just need an excuse to spend a few hours tying, come down to the Oil and Gas Commission on the Saturday after the general meeting every month (see Calendar). There will be novice tyers and experts in the same room, including Blake Jackson. You can learn new patterns, work on your go-to flies, and chat with club members.

Participation is free, and there will be some suppliers for new tyers. If you have a vice and materials, bring them along. Blake usually does some demonstrations featuring flies that work great in Wyoming waters. 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the Oil and Gas Commission.

Pheasant Tail Halfback

#1: Start with an 8 or 10 nymph with a red, orange, or pink bead. You can use a smaller hook when you get better at the pattern

#2: Tie in your thread and tie back to the bend of the hook.

#3: Measure out your pheasant tail (length of the shank) and tie into the back. Pull the tag end to the back of the hook and tie in again to hide the string. Leave tag end on.

#4: Tie in your hackle feather (any color will do- this is a reddish brown, but a grizzly looks nice too)

#5: Tie in peacock hurl and wrap forward, brining the thread to the bead. Trim off any extra at the bead end.

#6: Palmer the peacock hurl forward, wrapping away from yourself until you get to the bead. Tie it in and trim off any excess.

#7: Bring the thread back to about halfway on the shank. Begin to wrap hackle feather forward. Stop halfway and tie in.

#8: Take the pheasant tail and bring forward, leaving a slight hump. Tie it in at the halfway mark on the shank.

#9: Continue wrapping hackle feather forward until you get to the bead- tie it in and trim off any excess.

#10: Bring pheasant tile for-ward and tie in at the bead. Trim off excess.

#11: Finish with your whip finisher.

Where are you originally from?

NE South Dakota

What is your occupation?

I drive the bookmobile for the Natrona County Public Library.

Why did you join the Wyoming Flycasters?

I had just moved to Wyoming and wanted to learn to fly fish. I stopped at the Ugly Bug and they invited me to a general meeting.

What is your favorite fishing experience?

To steal a line from Gierach, “Standing in a River Waving a Stick”. You can’t beat the scenery when you are out fishing.

What is your favorite rod to use?

My favorite would have to be the 3 weight that I built myself after I first joined the club.

What advice could you give new members to the club?

Take advantage of the knowledge that the club members have and try to be as active in the club as you can.

Are there any outings/events with the club you are looking forward to?

I try to go to as many as I can but my favorite would have to be Ten Sleep. That was the first one that I went on after joining the club and is still one that I look forward to every year.

If you could fly fish anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Being relatively new to fly fishing, I would have to say that exploring more of Wyoming is on the top of my destination list.

Besides fly fishing, what are some of your other hobbies?

Camping, fly tying, and cooking come after family and fly fishing

Letter fromthe EditorFlycasters,You might notice that there is not a Treasurer’s report this month, nor is there a Secretary’s report. We didn’t have enough board members at the last meeting for anything official. I will tell you that we discussed Cabin Fever, which will be March 15th, the Saturday after the general meeting. It would be great if everyone could spread the word and stop by! The spring banquet is also in the works. If anyone has donations or ideas for what you would like to see at this years event, contact any board member, including me!The spring flush for Grey Reef is scheduled to tentatively start on March 10th and run for about 10 days. Fishing will be good so get out there and at least check out the flush!

Many of you have already heard, but Dick DePaemelere passed away last week after a long battle. There is no funeral planned as of now, but there will be a ceremony later in the summer. We will keep everyone in the loop. We are all praying for the DePaemelere family during this difficult time.

Thank you to Kelly and Matt, who are stepping down from their positions. They did a great job for the club! Send in your pictures and articles- I’ve warned you guys that you’ll get real sick of seeing me, Lee, and Lee... So I took a few friends fishing when it was nice. She’s hooked!Cheryl

Lee Tschetter has graciously accepted the position of Treasurer, relinquishing his position as Vice-President. Kelly will be stepping down as well from her role as President. I encourage everyone to consider running, even if it is just for one term. You will have complete support of the board and the club- you won’t have to start from scratch.
