Recruitment

WITH the pressure on the City’s private nancial sector to lead UK-wide economic growth, banks, companies, private rms and practices across Canary Wharf are re-strategising.

Th e market for skilled accountants, fi nance mangers and fi nance directors who can lead companies back to prosperity is becoming more buoyant by the day.

Budgets have been approved that just weren’t there in 2010, and the City’s headcount – particularly in the fi nance and accountancy sector – is mounting.

Salaries are set to also rise, as companies increase their budgets so that they can pay more to fi ll senior vacancies with skilled professionals.

Candidates applying for jobs in the Canary Wharf area are in a strong position, whereby it’s entirely possible to

receive more than one well-compensated job off er.

Equally, confi dence in the banking sector is beginning to pick up again following what was certainly a diffi cult year in terms of its public image.

In particular, the sector is expanding rapidly when it comes to freelance and contractor recruitment, as senior HR managers are seeking to reinstate those positions to fi ll key niches across the sector that were cut back during the recession.

As the Bank of England prepares to take over from the Financial Services Authority, it will be fascinating to see how the relationship between bank regulators and auditors pans out.

Th rough codes of practice, regulators and auditors are tasked with impartially monitoring, auditing and holding banks and fi nancial institutions accountable for their actions. Tighter accountability reporting will certainly help to instil public confi dence in the sector.

But it won’t all be smooth-sailing. Finance and accounting professionals have a challenging year ahead.

As a fi nance professional, you may well be expected to go beyond your traditional areas of expertise, including executive decision-making, strategy development and revenue-enhancement initiatives. In particular, FDs will be

expected to work outside their remit to ensure that they deliver change.

But there are many more professions in demand.

According to City fi nancial recruitment consultancy Robert

Half ’s 2011 Salary Guide, regulatory accountants topped the list of the highest paid, most sought-aft er roles in fi nancial services and banking in the City.

GAAPweb hosts a variety of exciting fi nance opportunities for fi nance professionals and part and fully-qualifi ed accountants. Discover the latest opportunities from GAAPweb in this month’s Wharf Careers.

IT’S all too easy to feel underappreciated as a fi nancial services employee at the moment. Th e prospect of further

regulation, the spotlight on bonuses and the lingering blame for the fi nancial crisis are all potentially making us bankers less open in discussing what we do at dinner parties.

Peel back this layer, however, and the outlook is far more positive. Th e fi nancial services job market is absolutely on the up, with most organisations coming out of two years of low or no growth and increasing their recruitment numbers.

Specifi cally in the graduate market, my area of expertise, vacancies in banking and fi nance are up 25% on last year and are almost two and a half times higher than they were in 2007, pre-recession. At HSBC, we’ve stayed open for business and continued recruiting graduates at broadly the same levels over the past three years, whilst others in banking have signifi cantly increased their numbers only this year. Good news for graduates – perhaps less so for us as we compete for the most rounded and employable candidates.

Our challenge this year is to change

graduates’ perceptions of the job market: there are jobs out there. As employers, we have a responsibility to work with universities to make sure that students complete their degrees not just with a great academic record, but with the portfolio of skills that we’re looking for. Th e outlook for the Class of 2011 is bright, with many recruiters, including HSBC, looking to fi ll vacancies.

We take our candidate experience very seriously and have invested a lot to make sure that it’s of the highest quality. Good candidates are also putt ing us through our paces on the quality of contact, speed of selection, organisational values and lots more.

Th is year, we’re launching a new platform that will make the way candidates interact with us even bett er, giving them more control and speeding up the time from application to interview, and ultimately, job off er.

So let’s look forward and be positive about the outlook for fi nancial services;there are many reasons to do so.

Canary Wharf ’s fi nance and accountancy professionals will help rejuvenate the economy

Financial forecast looks bright

Class of 2011

The City’s employment market in 2011 will see

new opportunities for employers and jobseekers in

London. Finance leaders are feeling more positive about the

UK’s economic outlook, particularly in the private sector. In

a recent survey by Robert Half, 61% of CFOs interviewed

expected the economy to remain steady over the next 12

months, and nearly a quarter predicted that it will grow

This is good news for jobseekers as many companies are

realising their teams are over-stretched, and therefore need

help to manage the increased workloads. Organisations that

cut their staff levels too deeply in 2010 are now hiring to help

get key initiatives back on track and capitalise on emerging

growth opportunities.

The same research indicated that CFOs based in London

believe the top priorities for businesses in the year ahead

are locating investment opportunities, business process

improvement and raising capital – just some of the ways

organisations are looking to improve their bottom lines

in a more favourable operating environment.
