PARTS OF A MICROSCOPE

The part of the microscope you look through to see an image.

OCULAR LENS (EYE PIECE)

This part of the microscope holds the objective lenses and is able to rotate to change magnifications.

REVOLVING NOSEPIECE

This part on the side of the microscope is used to support it when it is carried.

ARM

Objective lenses are used to magnify what you are looking at. They range from low to high power and are found on the nosepiece.

OBJECTIVES LENS

High power: 40x

Medium power: 10x

Low power: 4x

THERE ARE 3 OBJECTIVES:

Take the ocular lens 10x

And multiply it by the objective lens

CALCULATING “POWER” OR

MAGNIFICATION

What’s my power?

To calculate the power of magnification, multiply the power of the ocular lens by the power of the objective.

= 400x

The part of the microscope that supports the slide that is being viewed.

STAGE

These are used to hold a slide in place on the stage.

STAGE CLIPS

Specimens are placed on slides and then placed on the stage. They are secured there by the stage clips. This keeps the slide from moving while you view it.

SPECIMENS

This part helps you adjust the amount of light that reaches the specimen.

DIAPHRAGM

This part moves the stage up and down to help you get the specimen into view and “find” the object.

COURSE ADJUSTMENT KNOB

This part moves the stage slightly to help you sharpen or “fine tune” what you are looking at.

FINE ADJUSTMENT KNOB

Projects light upwards through the diaphragm to allow you to see the specimen.

LIGHT SOURCE

The bottom part of the microscope.
