What are Volcanoes?

By Daniel Emke

Page 2: What are Volcanoes?

2

A volcano is sort of like a chimney...

Page 3: What are Volcanoes?

3

A chimney for the earth!

Page 4: What are Volcanoes?

4

A chimney is something that helps let smoke

out.

Page 5: What are Volcanoes?

5

The earth has heat and gases inside of it...

Page 6: What are Volcanoes?

6

They need to escape too!

Page 7: What are Volcanoes?

7

The earth is made of layers.

Page 8: What are Volcanoes?

8

On the outside is the crust.

Page 9: What are Volcanoes?

9

The earth’s crust is made up of pieces...

Page 10: What are Volcanoes?

10

Kind of like a puzzle...

Page 11: What are Volcanoes?

11

Because they fit together.

Page 12: What are Volcanoes?

12

When they move, some

pieces overlap.

Page 13: What are Volcanoes?

13

In the spaces, magma comes to

the surface to escape.

Page 14: What are Volcanoes?

14

Magma is the hot stuff in the center

of the earth.

Page 15: What are Volcanoes?

15

When magma reaches the

surface it is called lava.

Page 16: What are Volcanoes?

16

When the lava pushes through

the spaces its called an eruption.

Page 17: What are Volcanoes?

17

Every time it erupts, it makes

the volcano bigger.

Page 18: What are Volcanoes?

18

It takes over 10,000 years for

a volcano to grow.

Page 19: What are Volcanoes?

19

“The average volcano erupts about one time

every 100 years.”

Page 20: What are Volcanoes?

20

Most of them start in the

ocean.
