Preparing for an Emergency By Amy St. Onge,
As part of our continued education credentialing for our Staff Members, I was happy to teach our annual CPR and First Aid course and utilize our newly purchased CPR equipment and AED Training Device. As a certified American Red Cross Instructor since 2007, I have been offering this course yearly and keeping our Staff prepared to act in the event of a life threatening illness or injury. The course blends theory and hands-on skills necessary for Staff to act in an emergency situation at BPI or in the community setting prior to the arrival of emergency medical services. The focus is on early recognition and care for sudden illnesses, choking and cardiac arrest. Staff learn how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and teaches other lifesaving and first aid skills.
It is important to be prepared to act as a first responder in the event of a medical emergency. For example, for every minute that defibrillation is delayed in cardiac arrest reduces the likelihood of survival by 10%. Since 2003, BPI has had an AED on site and accessible to use in the event of an emergency. All people in the lay public and medical professionals alike, should take the time to learn these valuable lifesaving skills. Courses through the American Red Cross and American Heart Association are offered regularly in most communities and can generally be found on-line or by calling your area Rescue Squad. For more information about this topic or with help finding a course, please call Amy St.Onge, RN at 442-8136. Tori and Bailey train
on the AED Machine while practicing CPR.

Winter Weather and BPI TransportationWith Winter weather soon approaching, a letter explaining our inclement weather policy will soon be distributed to all Members and their Families.
There may be days when the weather may make it unsafe for BPI to be open. In that event, BPI will announce the closure on WBTN 1370 AM.There may also be days when BPI will be open but cannot provide
transportation. This will be announced on the radio and Members will be contacted directly. Families or Caregivers are welcome to provide alternative
transportation to and from BPI on those days. There may also be days when we need to delay morning transportation or have to start afternoon transportation earlier than usual. We reserve the
right to assess the roads and make the decision as to when we will provide transportation. If we delay or start early, we will call each individual or
family directly. In the interest of ensuring the safety of all Members and Staff, we ask
that driveways, walkways, steps or ramps be adequately cleaned, salted or sanded. If these areas are not well cared for, BPI cannot assume
responsibility for providing transportation. Members/Caregivers will be welcome to make other arrangements to come to BPI.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call at 442-8136.
