• Arthur Evans discovered the ruins of a grand palace that had been the center of Minoan civilization!

Were the Minoans Greek?

• No, the Minoans were not Greek. – However, they lived in the land that would

become the land of the first Greeks.

• Like the Greeks would do later, the Minoans made their wealth from trade.– They built boats, packed them with goods,

and sailed as far as Egypt and Syria.

Where Did The Minoans Go?

• About 1450 B.C., the Minoan civilization suddenly collapsed.– Nobody knows why exactly, but some

historians think an undersea earthquake caused huge waves!

• Others think that a group of Greeks from the mainland called Myceneans invaded Crete.

The First Greek Kingdoms

• The Mycenaeans were originally from central Asia.– They invaded the Greek mainland around

1900 B.C.– They conquered the people living there.

• The Mycenaeans became the first Greek kings.

What Were Mycenaean Kingdoms Like?

• The center of each Mycenaean kingdom was a huge fortified palace on a hill.– The ruler lived there– It was surrounded by stone walls

• Mycenaean palaces were very busy places.– Artisans tanned leather, sewed clothes, and

made jars for wine and olive oil.

Power From Trade and War

• Soon after the Mycenaeans set up their kingdoms, Minoan traders began to visit from Crete.– Mycenaeans learned much about Minoan

culture.

• Although trade made the Mycenaeans wealthy, they were prouder of their deeds in battle.
