WHAT DO THE BLUE BOXES MEAN?How to ID and manage environmental risks using your Farm Environment Plan
July 2015
Sections 12-18 FEP The plan part of a FEP ID risks and create a plan to address them
What your FEP is all about!
LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS
Aim: To understand environmental risks on your property to target and prioritise good management
practices
Divide your farm that should be managed in a similar way Usually depends on:
Irrigation Type Soil Type Land Use Property location
Nutrient budget blocks should fall within LMUs on your property
LAND MANAGEMENT UNITSSTEP 1: IRRIGATION TYPE
Divide LMUs by paddock i.e. include dryland corners if treated same way
Use major irrigation type within paddock
LAND MANAGEMENT UNITSSTEP 1: IRRIGATION TYPE
Rotorainer
Pivot
Dry

LMU 2
LMU 3
LAND MANAGEMENT UNITSSTEP 2: SOIL TYPE
Separate where you can manage differently Use major soil type within paddock Use your knowledge of your farm
LAND MANAGEMENT UNITSSTEP 2: SOIL TYPE
LMU 1
LMU 2
LAND MANAGEMENT UNITSSTEP 3: LAND USE
Different property = different LMU if under same FEP Create different LMU if permanently different land
use i.e. dairy farm and dairy support
Treat rotations as same land use end up over whole property over time
LAND MANAGEMENT UNITSSTEP 3: LAND USE
Dairy Support
Arable

LMU 2
LAND MANAGEMENT UNITS
LMU 1: Rotorainer, light soil dairy support
LMU 2: Rotorainer, heavy soil dairy support
LMU 3: Pivot, heavy soil arable
LMU 4: Dryland, heavy soil arable
LAND MANAGEMENT UNITSSTEP 4: RISK ID
Environmental risks intrinsic to system, land and land use
Exclude day to day management
LAND MANAGEMENT UNITSSTEP 4: RISK ID
What are the relative risks between LMUs? E.g. light soil irrigated LMU vs heavy soil irrigated LMU Both have risk of irrigation inefficiency and N leaching Lighter soils greater risk than heavier
RISK MANAGEMENTSECTIONS 14-18
What do you need to achieve?
SHOW you meet environmental targets
2020 for existing shareholders Now for new shareholders
RISK MANAGEMENTSECTIONS 14-18
Questions
1. See where you are at2. Give you ideas

Tips for Answering Questions
• Be honest! There are no wrong answers
• Answers should reflect what the auditor will see First season, take your best guess and update later

• Your better practice “to do” list • Aim for Good or Best Practice if a risk in
LMUs• Can put anything in there• Can have a longer timeframe
RISK MANAGEMENTSECTIONS 14-18
What do you need to do?
