What do you remember about
bacteria?
Remember!
• Monera is classified as a Kingdom. • There are two Moneran Kingdoms:
1) Archaebacteria
2) Eubacteria
pneumonia
Archaebacteria Kingdom
• Live in harsh conditions like hot springs.
Ex. The yellow and orange rings around hot springs.
EubacteriaKingdom
• Germs in you.• Live in soil, water and human body.• Causes milk to become yogurt.• Causes ear, sinus infections, and pneumonia
Bacteria• Have no nucleus b/c they are prokaryotes.• Smallest organisms but the most abundant. Ex. 2.5 billion in one pencil eraser size of soil.
• 1st bacteria found in surgeonfish.
So, if bacteria are so numerous, how do
bacteria reproduce?
Binary Fission
• Bacteria pulling apart into 2 cells.
In which stage of binary fission is the picture
above?
STRUCTURE OF BACTERIA
But, where do bacteria reproduce?
Warm, moist environments!
What if it is a cold environment?
Endospores
• Are bacteria that grow a thick protective membrane to live harsh environments.
(Sorta like a coat!)
Ex. Insects in amber with endospores in their digestive tracts.
Shapes of Bacteria
Bacilli
(buh SIL ie)• Rod shaped
Cocci
(KAHK sie)• Circular
Spirilla
(spie RI luh)
• Spiral
Bacteria of the Day!
Cyanobacteria• Live in water.• Live in cells with nuclei.• Make food from the sun.• Protected by host.
Ticket out the door:1. Draw and explain binary
fission 2. Why this is beneficial or
harmful for humans and bacteria?
