What happens when matter goes through a
physical change?
What is matter?
Matter is everything around us that
takes space
Matter can be:(1) Solids:
(2) Liquids:
(3) Gases:
The air inside the balloon
Daddy, Can a matter change?
Of course dear, matter can change
Really? How is that?
Matter can change its
shape & size, let’s see….
It’s the change in the way matter looks.
{ Matter may look different in shape & size, but it’s still the
same matter}
Physical change of matter
Examples
1- Tearing a sheet of paper{It’s a kind of physical change, as the shape & the size of the paper
change, but it is still the same paper}
2- When we put water in freezer{It’s a kind of physical change, as
water freezes into ice, so it change from liquid to solid “ice”
but it is still water }
3- Pulling a rubber band{It’s a kind of physical change, as when we stretch a rubber band, it
stretches & return back to its size, But it is still the same
band }
Take care !!!!- Burning a sheet of paper is
not a physical change, as if the paper is burned to ash, it’s not a paper any more & we cannot return it back to paper again.
- Burning a match is not a physical change, as when the match burns, it’s not a match any more & we cannot return it back to match again.
- Baking a Cake from eggs, milk & flour is not a physical change, as we cannot return back the cake into eggs, milk & flour.
What is a mixture?Mixture is formed when different kinds
of matter mixed together
Examples:
Salad is a mixture of vegetables
Soil is a mixture of rocks & minerals
Air is a mixture of gases
Cocktail juice is a mixture of fruits
What is a solution?Solution is a kind of mixtures, which is formed when 2 or more kinds of matter
are mixed evenly “completely” into another kind of matter
Examples: Salt water is a solution
“When you mix salt with water, salt dissolve (disappear) into the water, we
don’t see it but it is still in there”
Sugar with water is a solution
Note: Not all solutions are liquids, Some solutions are made of solids too
How can we separate mixtures?
1- Picking up
Examples:1- Separating a mixture of meatballs & spaghetti
2- Separating mixture of nuts in a pack of nuts
2- By Magnets
Examples:1- Separating a mixture of sand & paper clips paper clips will be attracted to magnets & sand will stay behind
1- Separating a mixture of flour & iron Filing's Iron Filing's will be attracted to magnets & flour will stay behind
3- Filtration
Examples:- Separating a mixture of sand & water Using filter paper sand will stay in the filter paper & water will pass through
When we heat water, it evaporates & becomes gas.
4- Evaporation
Examples:
- Separating a mixture of sugar & water When we add sugar to water & stir, sugar dissolves “disappear’ in the water,, to separate them: Heat the mixture Water evaporates Sugar stays behind
