What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Our audience research was split into quantitive survey monkey questionnaire that covered yes/ no answers and multiple questions, and qualitative interviews that featured more open question but were also only a few questions long. We used our quantitive questions to help give us our audience and then the qualitive interviews to direct questions towards our target audience. Our qualitive interviews where in video format and we then uploaded them to Youtube.

We included a question on whether the audience played a musical instrument or sang we did this as often the audience of the indie genre will have their own bands and are into creating their own music. This meant we had our band use ordinary clothes in the music video and the Digi-pak images as to show that they to had just had a small band and been able to make it big.

The research into what people spent their money was also important for helping create our qualitive interview questions as helped us create the question on a bands imagery.

This is some research we did on peoples opinions of CDs/ digital downloads habits using the site survey monkey. Our research showed that downloading was much more popular then buying CDs however a significant amount of people bought CDs and downloaded music. When we asked about Digi-paks we found out that a majority of people had never bought one as this was the case we felt that the Digi-pak should seem more like a CD rather then being significantly different to the original CD version of the album so we more followed the conventions of having the cover match the advert.

Our questionnaire on survey monkey also showed us the split of our audience largely being between the age of 17-20 and being a slight majority of males as well as being a slight majority of middle class. This further helped direct or research by knowing how to target this group through social media sites as they are very pre-eminent in young peoples lives and meant it was pivotal we included social media links on our advert for two door cinema club. The fact that our audience was also largely middle class and therefore have a disposable income meant that we could further define our questions for our qualitive interview.

We also used our questionnaire to find out how our audience interacted with music magazines and music videos. Our research showed that a majority of people who answered our questionnaire never read music magazines and only a small amount did so weekly. Although we had this response we decided to include a number of music magazine reviews on our advert in order to make sure it conformed with the conventions of Indie bands.

our responses also showed that that a vast majority of our audience did watch music videos and so saw as a way to engage further with the music industry. As popularity of music videos was much more above that of music magazines and so it would be very important in how the music video would turn out as compared to our advert and Digi-pak. This could also be to do with the growth of Digital downloads over physical CDs in which online music videos are more popular then physical music magazines.

Qualitive interviews

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

These were the questions we asked for our qualitive interviews we chose to interview people who were interested in the indie genre and with the questions we found the favourite bands were usually two door cinema club, foals and Bombay bicycle club which help us to research their music videos in order to help create ours.

For this question we learnt that our audience preferred Digi-paks only if they came with more material such as extra songs or a DVD perhaps a documentary of the band. Knowing this was the case meant that for the creation of the Digi-pak we included 2 discs with 22 songs in order to appeal more to the audience.

In our qualitive interviews we found out that our audience was largely indifferent to whether we had a narrative in our music video however one response was that they preferred a narrative but we decided to go have a video without a narrative as often for the Indie audience music videos are of no importance when compared to the actual music itself. This is often shown in the genre through the way singles from indie bands will rarely get into the top 40 while their albums will be much more successful.

The answers to these two questions helped us understand how our audience viewed the band such as the way the appearance of the band and what they are wearing is important and also that they often play instruments and are in bands as a way of spending their spare time and that an Indie band often are known for wearing “cool” casual clothing and setting trends for their audience.

“amazing video! good use of fast-paced editing with the song - fits well into the Indie Rock music genre. also, the live performances of the band meshed the video together very well. one thing i would have improved would have been a smoother zoom transition in certain parts of the video. however, this does not take away from main focus of the video! :)”- Youtube comment

“good work really reminds me of bombay bicycle clubs shuffle video with all the random shizzle.”- Youtube comment

These are two examples of comments we received when we posted our video for What You Know on Youtube it helped us understand that we hit our target audience quite well as well as getting some constructive criticism for parts of our video like a smoother transition.

Overall our audience research was a great help in the process to creating our music video, advert and Digi-pak. It helped give us an idea of what our audience liked and how we could best address the Indie genre and helped ensure we applied codes and conventions that we could find in the research of other bands that our audience research showed us to.
