Potassium fertilizers can increase the salinity levels of soils, just as any of the other fertilizers. This can be especially true on heavy, poorly drained soils. A good rule-of-thumb is to apply potassium in no more than a 1:1 ratio with nitrogen. This is a very direct question, and you might think it wouldhave a very simple and direct

answer. After receiving this type ofquestion, I start the answer by askingsome questions of my own.

What are you trying to accom-plish by adding sand, and whatis your new expectation for thefield?

The assumption is often made thatrapidly draining sands will translateinto more macro-pores and betterdrainage when mixed with slower-draining soils. In reality, thoroughtesting of potential materials must becompleted before a mixture of sandand soil can be considered.Recommendations for combining sandand soil based on particle size testingalone are misleading. Performancecriteria that define water movementand water holding will have a pro-found effect on plant growth and sur-face footing during high-moisture con-ditions. Additional parameters thatmust be evaluated when designing arootzone mix of sand/soil include: bulkdensity, saturated hydraulic conduc-tivity, aeration porosity, capillaryporosity, saturation, organic mattercontent, and coefficient of uniformity. In most cases, an acceptable saturat-ed hydraulic conductivity of eight to12 inches per hour requires at least 90percent sand on a weight basis. So, ifyou're looking for rapid internaldrainage, you will need:

1. A very high sand content in thefinal sand/soil mix(usually greaterthan 90 percent by weight).

2. Sand that conforms to the spec-ifications in Table 1.

3. Physical testing of a compactedsample of the sand/soil mixture toinsure that the final mix ratio willproduce adequate internal drainage(infiltration rate between eight and 12inches per hour).

How do I mix the sand and soil?Sand/soil mixtures that meet

acceptable performance criteria

guarantees concerning field perfor-mance can be made. By not addingenough sand or by adding the wrongsize sand, you could increase com-paction and make the situation worse.

should be considered. Off-sitemechanical blending of materials willbe required to produce a laboratorydesigned rootzone mix. Laboratory-designed rootzone criteria can not bereproduced by on-site tilling of sandinto an existing soil. Again, if rapidinternal drainage is your goal, tilling-in sand from the surface is probablynot the solution. Rootzone mixtures ofsand and soil that have high infiltra-tion rates should also have a networkof drains that can remove water afterit rapidly moves through the profile.

What if I don't have the budgetfor off-site mixing and I justwant to reduce the hardness ofmy field for better aerifier pen-etration, better root growthand improved water infiltra-tion?

Some athletic field soils will notimprove with addition of sand, whileothers have shown benefits. Soilswith silt contents exceeding 2-1/2times that of the clay fraction are notsuitable for amendment with sand.Soils having silt-to-clay ratios of 2.0 orless are preferred. As a target, amendat least the top four to eight inches ofthe existing field. I generally findthat field hardness is reduced andgrowing conditions improve when thefinal sand/soil mixture contains atleast 80 percent sand by weight. Usethe sand specifications provided whenamending soils. Spread half of thesand on the field and till to your tar-get depth. Apply the other half andtill again. Do not till too much; it isbetter to leave some clods of soil andchannels of sand to aid water infiltra-tion. Continue with a regular coringand sand topdressing program so thatthe sand content near the surface willremain high enough to reduce com-paction and improve water movementinto the field.

Laboratory designed sand basedsystems that are mixed off site andare fitted with a subsurface drainagesystem are the preferred means ofbuilding fields that resist compactionand have rapid internal drainage. Toguarantee the performance of asand/soil mixture, it must be laborato-ry tested and also mixed off-site.Tilling sand into an existing field mayimprove some conditions, but few

STMAHold Action-Packed Conference Kicks off 1998

Talk about action! Thingswere moving at STMA's 9thAnnual Conference &

Exhibition January 14 -18 at Disney'sCoronado Springs Resort and Disney'sWide World of Sports complex. Thewhirlwind of activity started earlyWednesday morning, when two bus-loads headed out for the first Seminaron Wheels tour and another busload ofgolfers headed for the course. Theflurry of activity continued until thelast of three busloads returned fromthe second Seminar on Wheels tour onSunday.

Cameras caught some of the firsttour participants "petting the topi-aries" during the behind-the-scenestour of Disney's Horticulture Center, and "digging into the turf' at ScottsResearch facility and in the fields onboth tours. There were reports of somegreat golf; and stories of not so greatgolf.

Conference sessions were "super,""great," "filled with ideas I can use,"and "targeted to solving our problems,"according to just a few of the com-ments from session participants. Theround-table discussions were a hitagain as well. They participantsdescribed them as "really stimulating,""great sharing of ideas," and "myfavorite part of a super conference."

The flow of information andexchange of ideas continued at themeet-and-mingle trade show exhibi-tion at Disney's Fieldhouse, the tour ofthe complex, the on-the-field seed plotreview, and the "Products on Parade"and "How We Do It?" demonstrations.

Reggie Williams' welcome displayedhis passion for and commitment to bet-ter and safer sports turf areas. Greatitems and auctioneer extraordinaireTom Curran made the live auctionaction-filled, lot's of fun and a real plusfor the scholarship fund. Conversation

and camaraderie flowed during theopening and pre-banquet receptionsand around the cookie, coffee and sodatables at the breaks.

Don't miss out. Mark your calendarright now for STMA's 10th AnnualConference and Exhibition January 13- 17, 1999, in Mesa, Arizona.
