What is a disability?
• Some kids use things like wheelchairs or hearing aids
• Other kids have disabilities you can’t see, like autism or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
• Different ways of doing things are just part of who kids are, just like you and me!
What is a developmental disability?
• There are different types of disabilities that are “developmental”
• This means that someone may act younger than their age, or may have difficulty with their behavior
• They could take longer to learn, or it may be harder for them to remember things
• This includes autism, Asperger’s, “PDD-NOS,” epilepsy, Tourette syndrome, and others

• Some kids may not be able to walk, or may need help to walk
• Some kids may be hard to understand when they talk, so it helps to take time to listen
• Even though some kids have trouble moving or talking, they think the same as other kids

• Sensory just means it’s about the senses like seeing and hearing
• Some kids may need help seeing– They may wear glasses, use canes, or have seeing
eye dogs (service dog)• Other kids may need help hearing
– They may wear hearing aids, read lips, or use sign language with their hands

• Kids may move in different ways (tics)
• Some kids may say different words or make sounds over and over
• It may be hard for them to control, so don’t blame them, just be their friend!

What is Asthma?
• Some kids have trouble breathing• Other kids use medicine that looks like steam;
some use an inhaler • Problems breathing may look scary but are
fixed fast • Asthma “attacks” don’t happen all the time• Kids with asthma can still play sports and do

• Seizures may look scary but most kids don’t know it’s happening

Mental Health
• Some kids have disabilities that are in their brains
• They may get sad or angry a lot
• They may not be able to control their behavior
• This means sometimes they may act differently
• It’s just like someone with any other kind of disability, so they shouldn’t be blamed

• Some kids may have a hard time learning things in school
• Usually they struggle with reading or math

• Some kids may have lots of energy that they may not be able to control
• Other kids have a hard time paying attention
• Kids may also have trouble waiting their turn

People first
• Whatever the disability, it’s better to say a person with (disability) instead of deaf, blind, … Example: Don’t say “autistic” but say “person with autism.”
• People come first, not the disability!
Don’t be silly! Disability isn’t contagious!
• Some kids think they can catch things from other kids. You can catch a cold, but you can’t catch a disability!
• Disabilities aren’t the same as illness
• Kids with disabilities are just like all kids, and want to be friends
Asking for help
• Everyone needs help sometimes.
• If you are a kid with special needs, don’t be afraid to ask for help
• If you are a friend of a kid with disabilities, ASK them if they need help first
• All kids have the right to do things for themselves the best they can!
