Handshake EtiquetteAll handshakes send a message and it might be the WRONG message. The shaker may not intentionally want to send a wrong message, but that is the message they are sending. We evaluate and judge the person based on their handshake.

What does your handshake say about YOU? If you do it right, you can do it the same way every time. We have to learn how to give the perfect handshake. Extend your hand and meet in between the index finger and the thumb. Three up and down shakes is the maximum acceptable amount of shakes.

One CORRECT type of handshakeThe Professional handshake (This is the proper way to give a handshake. Go straight out and meet between the index finger and the thumb.)

Four WRONG types of handshakes:1. The Lobster handshake (the hard squeeze – hurts; it says the person giving this handshake is disengaged and

insecure)2. The Politician handshake (insincere – usually given by politicians; while shaking the other person’s hand, you

take your other hand and place it over the handshake; you must know the other person well and have a relationship with the other person to give this kind of handshake. Do not use this handshake when interviewing for a job.)

3. The School Yard Bully (bone crunching – hurts) handshake (this is an aggressive handshake – I’m difficult to deal with)

4. The Pointer handshake (The index finger is pointing at the other person; the shaker is saying that “I know better than you.”)
